As an Aggie, and an Old Ag to boot, it is a tradition and it is weird. We have a saying in Aggieland, "From the outside you can't understand it, and from the inside we can't explain it." Great video as always, Josh. Two things as an Aggie: 1) Thanks for posting the video of the yell leaders on their own; it helped refresh my memory of how those two yells go. 2) We are definitely weird. In fact, as I've seen posted elsewhere online: We put the "cult" in "Agriculture."

I used to be Cadre in the Air Force in Air Force ROTC at Syracuse University. But we were all connected through the ROTC network throughout the country. The Cadre that were in ROTC at Texas A&M would always say that it’s like a cult there and their ROTC program had an alarmingly high suicide rate among the Cadets. It’s tragic.

Thanks, Josh. Nope - I’m not an Aggie. I’m a Razorback - and we call the Hogs (PROUDLY!) for goodness sake! In Norman, they drive a little schooner around, in Clemson the team rubs a rock as they run downhill onto the stadium turf. All special tradition. Very cool. Thanks for not worrying about who might be offended. Always appreciate your well-thought opinions (don’t always agree with you) and your videos.

This isn't just a good philosophy for college traditions. It's a good philosophy for life in general. A lot of people will be into stuff you don't get, or don't like, or don't care about. If it makes them happy and it doesn't hurt you, be glad they're happy and leave them be. It's not hard to just be chill and respectful of people who aren't like you and are just existing and living their best lives independently of anything that affects you. I wish this wasn't such a hard concept for so much of our country to understand.

Their primary purpose is to direct the crowd noise. Ever since Bill Byrne became the Athletic Director, everything became scripted. Back when the PA announcer would just shut up and let the Yell Leaders and Aggie Band dictate the crowd noise, Kyle was an intimidating place (we didn't lose a single home game my sophomore, junior, or senior year). @@davidhfranz That's fine. But that sounds a lot like what regular cheer squads are for. My comment about "really bad cheerleaders" is that they're nowhere near as crisp, organized, and coordinated as what you'd expect from an average collegiate cheer squad. They just look like some frat bros hanging out on the sideline. Apparently, TAMU does have an actual cheerleading team, but it's restricted to women only...probably so as to not step on the toes of these yell leaders. But, that's just an outsider's perspective.

"Formed in 1907 when A&M was all-male military school." A&M was basically a reform school. In the early days of the Internet there were official references to this background. "Send us your troubled boys" (paraphrasing). Some Texas Monthly magazine picture captions from 1981: "'Squeeze, Ags!’ These yell leaders are-yes, it’s true-squeezing their privates in order to share pain with the team on the football field. Nobody knows who first came up with this idea, but it’s never caught on with anyone but Aggies." Another caption: “'It is not a fish privilege to think, want, like, or feel.' So if an upperclassman puts a tennis ball on a fish’s nose just for the hell of it, that fish must maintain military demeanor, and so must any other fish who happens by. It’s tough." And another: "Quadding: Stripped to his shorts, a cadet has barrels of water poured on his crotch from a second-story window" (his arms and legs are outstreched by other cadets). One more: "Wearing tall, expensive senior boots is the culmination of every Aggie’s career. They show he’s made it through the crap-outs and through the classes. Aggies wear the boots every day of their senior year, then put them away forever."

That video is strange even for an Aggie who gets it. It doesn't show the context of what they do within a gameday environment or midnight yell. I also remember them having more of a masculine, John Wayne type vibe to them back when I was in school. That tradition has clearly been lost lol

To get why there are male yell leaders at Texas A&M, you gotta look at the history. Founded in 1876, Texas A&M was an all male, military college, hence why the yell leaders are all men to this day. Moreover, every student had to be in the Corps of Cadets (ROTC) even if they did not accept a commission in the military after graduation. Women were not allowed to enroll in the university until 1965, the same year when joining the Corps of Cadets became voluntary. To this day, besides the 5 Federal military academies (West Point, Annapolis, the Air Force Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy), there are 6 schools designated as "Senior Military Colleges" that provide the bulk of ROTC commissions into the military (Texas A&M, Virginia Military Institute, The Citadel, Virginia Polytech, Norwich University, and the University of North Georgia). I've got 3 grad degrees on top of my Bachelor's. I went to A&M for my PhD so while not really part of the "cult of A&M," it was a special and different experience to the other universities I've attended. Gig 'Em Ags!

Here's the thing about the Yell Leaders. Their routines have gotten more and more bizarre since I graduated in 2000. Here are some facts about them: 1. The Yell Leaders are ELECTED positions. For anyone throwing a fit that there aren't any women Yell Leaders, the primary voting block for Yell Leaders are sororities. As far as I know, there have been four women to ever run for Yell Leader. They received 3,000 COMBINED votes over the last 20 years. 2. As least when I was in school, R.C. Slocum had the head yell leader participate in 2-a-days in fall camp. The most notable Head Yell Leader is Rick Perry '72, former Governor of Texas. 3. The Corps of Cadets tend to vote in a single voting bloc for 3 seniors and 2 juniors. Of the 4 head yell leaders when I was in school, two were USMC Lieutenants for a fairly significant length of time. The makeup of the yell leaders when I was in school was as follows: 1996 - 2 senior cadets, 1 non cadet, 2 junior cadets. The 1996 election was infamous because the Aggie Band voted en masse against one of the Corps Bloc candidates, splitting the Corps Vote and electing a candidate they "did not approve of". Gary Kipe was treated poorly his senior year to say the least (someone destroyed his senior boots with shears). This also resulted in the Aggie Band losing the right to put the Outhouse on the top of the Aggie Bonfire. 1997 - All cadets 1998 - All cadets 1999 - 3 senior cadets, 1 junior cadet, 1 junior non-cadet. Ricky Wood was treated so poorly during the 1999 season that Jeff Bailey, the Head Yell Leader, had to address the entire cadet corps and admonish them. In the 2000 elections, Wood ran unopposed. 4. The entire tradition of Yell Leader was started as a joke in the 30's. During one game in which the team was doing poorly, a group of seniors had their freshman dress up in janitor uniforms and act like fools. They ended up drawing more of the attention of those cadets' dates than they did, which caused them to take over. It's since morphed from there.

Most of our traditions began in the 40s and before. They are based on the school being an all military and all male school. Each tradition has a reason how it began. When the reason is known the tradition makes sense (at least to us ags). If we changed our traditions we would loose that connection to our past. All schools have their traditions. We just have a whole lot more than most, and that makes us "weird" to a lot of people. You're right though Josh, we really don't care what other people think.
