regarding Gnome forks, i believe that Mate and Cinnamon were both created around the same time(?) and in response to gnome 3. With Mate being a fork of Gnome 2 and Cinnamon being a fork of Gnome 3 that was more "traditional"

Yes. I noticed _many_ inaccuracies, especially in the first hour or so, but I don't wanna spend another 2 hours to listen again and collect them all 😭 I would have made similar mistakes in the same position, so I'm not blaming Jonathan.

I think I know why people complain about "Red Hat controlls GNOME", but not Cosmic, the literal company-made DE: Cosmic didn't yet take any controversial decisions that have an effect on the whole ecosystem, while Red Hat has pushed pulseaudio, systemd, Wayland, and a bunch of smaller changes that affected most or all distros.
