replaces a couple older videos..point of interest...the naked waterbottle in this video is a WW1 MKVI because its painted blue inside...it has been brought up to ww2 MKVII spec by being painted olive to the outside and ww2 dated.....it has been the feature of its own video back in 2014.....by no means complete ,not the best waterbottle design in terms of accessability, but it soldiered on with the british until the more american style 1944 pattern alloy bottle was introduced, but was still retained well into the 1950s...the green bottle is the MKVII, which replaced the WW1 period blue enamel MKVI,holds just under 2 pints of water...the official name for the medical harness is "carrier,other services",and in addition to use by medical personell it was also used by those who were not required to have a full set of webbing.

You have mentioned all the disadvantages of the British canteen. Despite its shortcomings, I believe it was in use because it was considered part of the tradition. And probably a lot of supplies as well. You can also mention the canteen made of aluminum, probably used in the Far East. I am looking for these stripes for the medic's canteen, if anyone wants to part, please contact me.

Australian bottles had leather harnesses also. I’ve seen numerous which are dated in the war period.

Great stuff a good insight into the subject. I have the bag variety, but it has a long shoulder strap on it with some writing on the strap?. The stoppers remind me of the army cadets,we used 37 pattern webbing, every mouthful of water you got the taste and some bits of cork !, cheers 🙂

sounds like yours has a british army crosstrap added so it can be worn like a shoulder bag,,,the writing is probably the maker and date and servicemans number/name...when they are worn as crosstraps the details are against the uniform and are not visible.

Didn't the home guard have a leather Webb carrier?.. I've got two British water bottles. One green the other blue. The blue bottle has its string attachment at the back of the spout. I've heard they are New Zealand water bottles? Both the Webb carrier's are dated 1940

hi, yep there was the HG 39 patt leather harness,and the british civil defence and st john ambulance had a black leather carrier,, you are correct, the blue bottle with an eyelet at the back is one of 2 million ww2 mk VII bottles produced in new zealand.

Hello. I appreciate your videos. I do have a question regarding these water bottles. Do they also come with rubber stoppers during WW2?
@historicmilitaria1944
@historicmilitaria1944 2 жыл бұрын
Hi,no they always had cork...its possible rubber replacements were retrofitted by other countries who used the bottles after the war.

I also thought those water bottles were replaced by the 44 Patten water bottles??
@historicmilitaria1944
@historicmilitaria1944 2 жыл бұрын
technically the 44 pattern was introduced for the far east campaign, but not enough to go around meant that both webbing types were issued side by side..the 44 patt was still being made after ww2, but evolved eventually into the plastic 58 patt.
