When it comes to frame rates, it's easy go get confused. In today's video, I'll show you what I shoot in and also why! Keep in mind it's hard to convey the difference in frame rates in a KZbin video, the best way is to compare them yourself and you'll see a noticeable difference! Still, hopefully this video will clear up some confusion and will teach you something new :)

Soooo...24 fps or 30 fps? What do you shoot in?

Now I shoot in 30. I was also told that slowing the 30 down to 80% still works well (as opposed to putting it into a 24p timeline). Have you tried that, Mike?

I almost always shoot 30fps. It's standard frame rate for TV in the US, so most people are used to watching this frame rate; Great video Mike, so many people are confused about frame rates, you did a nice of job of explaining in a way most people can understand.

This makes total mathematical sense to me. I have a new mavic air, heading to Maui at Christmas and didn't know what frame rate was best. So, it's 30 fps for me unless I want slow motion at 120 fps. By the way, this was not boring content. It was critical information that I very much needed.

Way to get the conversation started Mike, it's always good to listen and learn from others. I am pretty much shooting everything at 30fps and then exporting on a 24p timeline. I can choose whether or not to slow the footage down to 80% regular speed, which I do nearly 100% of the time with my Spark shots - just makes them a touch smoother. I only choose higher frame rates when I am intentionally shooting for slow motion. 😀

Cheers for the video. I've been experimenting with 30 frames rendered at 24 and 48 frames rendered at 30 and found shooting at 30 works best for smoothness and detail.

Thank you so much for your tip on 30 over 24 fps, I was struggling with finding that buttery smooth video that I wanted with my mavic air. I was thinking about going to 60 fps and sacrificing some quality to get that smooth cinematic look, but this is great news and after trying it out yesterday in some very bright snowy conditions I can confirm this works beautifully. Love the channel man keep up the great work!

Always love your stuff man! Glad someone made a video on this. I posted in a forum not to long ago about how 24fps is not good on the DJI Mavic 2 Pro for bringing the camera up or down. H.265 or H.264 has no affect on this nor does the resolution. It is directly related to frame rate. 30fps is much better. I initially thought it was a compression issue as it doesn't happen across the entire image. I wish DJI would increase the 100mbps to 160mbps. I wonder if this would clear that up. Good video!

You are completely right, I just caught on to this recently. In 24fps I had the same problem, it was jittery. But recording at 30fps The problem disappeared. Putting it into a 24fps timeframe is like magic. Great video, Thanks for the tips.

I was always wondering why i would see certain drone footage and it just looked sharper/more crisp than mine. I’d be shooting in 24fps using ND filters, 180 degree rule, etc., but for some reason it never had that same look/feel. The moment you showed the 30fps shots I immediately knew that’s what it was. Thanks a million! I cant wait to shoot my next video. Post pandemic

I'm amazed by how well this works. I tested by capturing in 30 fps and did your trick with automatic speed (slowing to 80% speed) and also tried a 30 fps timeline. I honestly like the slowed down 24 fps timeline better and feel like it makes for a better viewing experience.

Excellent tip! This video just helped me salvage some 30fps drone footage that I needed to use on a 24fps timeline. I've been shooting video with DSLRs and mirrorless for several years and like to shoot in 24fps. But I'm still a newb when it comes to using drones. I've already noticed that 24fps doesn't always work all that well for my drone footage. The 80% speed of 30fps converted to 24fps is a nice look. Thanks for making this video!

Great video Mike. Yeah, I have noticed that Hollywood movies either shoot straight on forward and backward, side to side, rise up and lower down, corner to corner. You do not see much of the circular rotation around a point of interest too much and if you do they keep the radial speed very very slow as 24fps can not keep up with the rotational speed of objects moving through the frame. It is just too fast for smooth transitions in each frame. You can do a test and film in 24 fps second and do a point of interest at a very slow rate and then a quicker rate, you will see the skipping effect once you hit a certain radial speed. That radial speed depends on what is in the frame and how far away it is, the farther away it is the faster it moves and the more likely it will start to skip at 24 frames a second. It will happen at any frame rate, but at 24 fps you will notice it sooner. Great video.

Good info! I don't have a drone, but if I did, I would use lower frame rates for the big scenic shots. If I had one that was following me while doing action, I would get up to 60fps, if it had the ability. For mountain biking, I shoot at 60fps on the action camera. Much smoother and video quality is excellent.
@FallenStarFeatures
@FallenStarFeatures 3 жыл бұрын
Frame rate can have a noticeable effect on the perceived smoothness of slow camera panning shots. The slower the frame rate, the choppier the pan will look, and there's a hidden pitfall those who shoot in 24 fps often encounter. Most monitors and TV's refresh their image at 60 Hz. Since 24 fps does not divide evenly into 60, that 24 fps footage produces an uneven refresh rate when displayed at 60 Hz, which can make slow pans look ragged. To produce the smoothest pans for display on 60 Hz monitors, the best camera frame rates are 60 fps and 30 fps.
@tomarse84

Most useful comment here! But it's not only the shooting fps that's relevant, it is also the timeline. I will never understand why all those KZbinrs who want to create cinematic footage upload 24p timelines onto KZbin. 99 % of people are watching YT on either their smartphone or a tablet/computer screen, and those screens are 60 Hz in most cases - and as you mention, 60 does not evenly divide by 24, so the result is a 3:2 pulldown that makes it look choppy. Most obvious when there are pans or other major movement involved, that's why in drone footage it's critical. 24p on YT would only make sense if "choppy" was an integral attribute of cinematic footage. But I think it is not. 30p with a shutter speed that floats somewhere around the 180 degree shutter rule will give you the most cinematic look - on smartphones and computer screens, at least.

Hi Mike, when taking panning shots it's even better to go to 48 fps. I always got quite some jitter with my Spark, so I stopped making these type of shots (which are btw not so cinematic too). Now with my Anafi and 48 fps while circling a POI it works great. Thanks👍

When I first got my drone, I do don’t know about frame rates etc, so just thought “why not just use 4K60” as the highest quality is best. But once I found out about fps, and the 180 degree look. Now I always shoot in 25fps, and 1/50 shutter after buying a load of Freewell filters. It’s made my footage look so much better. Made all the difference between amateur and professional level shots. I’ve been told that here in the uk, it should always be 25fps, and if I was in the states it would be 24fps. Something to do with frequency of electricity in the different countries or something. Weird, but I can tell how much better my footage is. & even been using 1080p 25fps & the footage is loads nicer.

I totally agree with you. It's a lot of drone videos on KZbin who are filmed in higher fps and post in lover that give the terrible jitter. I want to see smooth videos otherwise I missing the moment in them. My first videos I did was recorded in 30 fps because that's the fps I was recommended from my KZbinrs. And of course my film have jitter specially the closeup clip. I took a bit of my clip and make a second clip in 30 fps and it looks perfect. Now I always use 30 fps :)

Thanks Mike. You don't mention that we're still presented with NTSC (US. / 30fps) and PAL (Europe & Asia 25fps). But the need to adhere to these has long past as they were for the old cathode ray TV sets and the Mains electrical frequency, which is irrelevant for modern displays. So there's nothing wrong for Europeans to be shooting in 30fps and that's why I do too...😎👍🏻 Cheers, Ian in London.

Just curious to why one would export 30 fps footage to 24 fps under any circumstance. Won't that just introduce "lost frames" and jitters anyway since the refresh rate of most cell phone and computer screens is 60 hz? The playback software would have to do some type of interpolation twice for every second, if I understand it right..?

Hi Mike, thank you very much for this video. Is this specific video on a 30 p timeline, right? Because you also talk about shooting in 30 p and putting it in a 24 p timeline..... which works very well if slowed down to 80 % BUT this 24 p timeline will then again be stuttering on a standard 60 Hz monitor (smartphone, tablet, computer monitor). So for KZbin purposes, 30 p makes the most sense. And I guess, this videos is on a 30 p timeline. Right?

I think 30 fps makes the most sense. So often video is ever so slightly slowed down to give it that cinematic look, which as you mentioned can be slowed to 24 fps if shot in 30 fps. But if shot in 24 fps, slowing down isn't possible without introducing strange effects. Think I'll plan to stick with 30.

could you tell me why my Mavic pro also has a stutterring / jittering video in 24 fps ? is it normal ? just because there is not enough frame rates to deliveer the smooth video ? the problem dispapears like in your case in 4k30 fps

The problem with jittery 24fps is what is displaying it. What you’re seeing is poor playback on your display. If you play a 24fps video on a 60Hz display, it will have judder. If you play the same 24fps on a 120Hz display (tv), voila, no judder. 30fps will play correctly on both 60Hz and 120Hz. Turns out it’s a simple math problem.

Thanks for sharing brother, I'll give it a try and see if it will work for me. Wow this video was from 5 years ago. I wonder if the advice you gave works today in 2024.

Hi and thx for your tutorial . I edit in videopad. So if i film in 30 fps 1080 HD then slow speed down by 80 percent should I save the final export to 30 or 24 fps ?? looking for smoother footage

It depends if your project is in 24fps or 30! I advise you to make a 24fps project, import your 30fps footage and slow it down to 80%. That would make it the smoothest :)

Yeah, you are right tho, its ok to shoot in 30fps with our drones, and works fine when you do slowmo and render it to 24fps. 24fps is best for natural and cinematic look based from movies, tv programs and history of film making.

for me, i just got a sony zv e10. before that i'm only using 2 smartphones (samsung galaxy j7 prime and oppo f1s) both with native cams set at 30 fps. since i only have (now) just one camera and there will be times that i might need to use the phones, i set the zv e10's camera to 30 fps as well, to match with the phone footage, and no problem with premiere pro 30 fps timeline. but for slomo, i've seen a number of youtube videos with 60 fps slowmo is more dramatic/cinematic (and for normal human actions and speed), while just use 120 fps for very fast moving subjects.

I shot in 48 FPS and that was smoother than 24 FPS also. As far as uploading to youtube does it matter what FPS my video is ?? I uploaded my 48 FPS video to youtube and it seemed ok?

If you could only choose one. Would it be the mavic air. Or parrot anafi. The anafi is down to 549.00 US. Do you think that it's a good deal???

what about 60 fps for Dji Fpv , what the best frame to use for Final cut pro ?
@vikingirk
@vikingirk 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. One thing. Dji dron shooting not in 24 frames per secon, but in 23,97. Try to set your project in 23.97 fps, and look, will you have that jitter when you shoot at 24 fps, or not. I try this, and jitter has gone. Same thing with 30 fps, the project fps have to by set for 29.97 fps.
