The person who starts shipping the roller shutters to Svalbard will make a fortune! I can’t believe no one has come up with this idea yet. They are easy to install by non-professionals. You just take the measurements of your windows and they will make you a custom roller shutter and send it to you. You just mount it on your window. There are countless tutorials on youtube. Just to get them from the mainland somehow. They are also insulated so they would also be useful in winter and during storms.

Tip for shutting more light out: Put velcro on the edges of the curtain (the side that faces the window) and the other half of the velcro on the wall next to the window. When you stick the curtains to the velcro on the wall it holds it closer to the wall which blocks more light from coming through. We have an oddly shaped window and I get really bad migraines, and this worked really well for us!

You could put a sliding wooden door on the outside of the window. It is made of a slim metal frame with wooden filling. It slides on a rail, that is fixed to the outside wall, so you can open or close as you like. This is what we have here in our house. Very simple construction, someone with manual skills can make it on his own. Depending on how you build the wooden filling, it can have gaps and therefore let some light in or be shut completely. Easy to make, inexpensive and very useful!

Back in Europe, especially in the Balkan region, there are shutters that you lift every morning, and they protect you from the light perfectly, it's literally completely dark inside until you lift them, and they protect the windows from possible storms. They are not expensive and they are easy to install and use. They go on the outside of the windows and doors. They are white but the way they are made, they stack up on top of each other, and inside the house /apartment you have something like a twill tape to pull them up or down. It's really a lifesaver in every way. You may want to look into them. I'll try to find a picture of them and send it to you in Instagram. I live in Mexico and they don't have them. That is why I hate summer. The long hours of daylight, the heat and the social pressure to like the summer... I hate it. I can imagine that you are so tired from all that light. I have blackout curtains in my bedroom and livingroom. And when all that summerlight drives me crazy I shut the curtains in the room where I am and relax with a little lamp and a good book. Exactly the reason why I hate winter, makes me feel so sad and lonely. I love when the sun sets late. That said wouldn't want 24 hours of day light for so long.

My wife and I dislike summer very much as well. We don't experience midnight sun as we live in Wisconsin USA, but the summers here are BRIGHT, and HUMID, and many days are well over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. We are cold & dark weather people...cozy time 😊

For the curtains - get Velcro stickers. Put them around the edges of the sides of the curtains and the wall and stick them down to the wall when you want to block all the light. Also use them to attach the center of the curtains to each other. Super easy to block all the light. You can get tiny white square ones and you’ll barely see them.

Why don’t you add blackout curtains to all the windows you can get the Velcro ones which make a room pitch black

Hi Cecilia. In the years of watching your videos, I can't recall any images of any bugs/insects, not even a spider. I can't imagine you're completely bug-free, so I'm curious: no mosquitos? ticks? fleas? flies?

Svalbard is so beautiful but 24 hours of sun would definitely be hard on me so I would definitely be Team Polar Night! ❤ Have you ever seen “Insomnia” with Robin Williams? Set in Alaska and you see him progressively struggle to sleep during the long sunny days. 😮

I think you need different blinds, blackout Roman shades to keep more light out only when needed but better than foil on window. I can’t imagine 4 months of sunlight.

Hi Cecilia, I also like the darkness and cozy vibe that winter brings (Alberta, Canada) I would totally love a before and after of your bedroom if you were to do a summer bedroom and winter bedroom set up. Summer bedroom with darker sheets. For better curtain coverage, maybe try hanging them wall to wall. Get some sleep ☺

You don't need those little lights behind your bed in the summer. And if your cabin is so hot, use fewer covers.

We have the same issue with the sunlight heating up the house. We're renting so we're limited to what we can do, but one thing I found that helps block the bright light and some of the heat is taking the living room curtains and folding the bottom up and tucking them into the window frame and sill. They are blackout curtains that hang down longer than the windows are, so I have to fold them up. It doesn't look super fantastic, but it does block out the light much better that way and stuffing them into the window frame keeps some of the heat out, whereas heat just accumulates in the space between the glass and the loose curtain if they're just hanging like normal. Next time you visit the mainland, take your window measurements and perhaps a store there has a solution that would work for your cabin. If you can maybe shield your living room with blackouts and put a temporary divider up at the kitchen (even a privacy screen may help), you could keep your living room darker, which will help the tv area and your bedroom be a tad bit darker too and give you that cozy dark respite you need I agree it's a lot of fussing, but you seem to be having a harder time with Polar Day the last couple years so maybe the fussing would be worth it. We've had a lot of sh** weather where I am, including a few bad storms this year too. Since the Polar Vortex reversed, I expected some changes but didn't expect more storms. Hope your week ahead is good.

one trick a friend of mine taught me when we were in university and he had west facing windows: get cardboard and cut it to the shape of the window and add tinfoil to the outside. slide it into the frames. As we are in Canada, we have light into the the late evening in summer. This kept his place cool and dark until the sun went down. You then take it down in the morning and slide it under your bed. This also works for shift workers who need to sleep during the day. Blocks the heat and light (we don't have air conditioning in many places and really could use it so any trick helps)

You need hurricane roll down shutters. They will also help with the strong winds in winter !! 👍

Midnight sun is so hard to deal with. I too get extremely exhausted during the summer months. My seasonal depression always starts during winter break-up. A lot of people here in interior Alaska buy the window tint/insulation from Amazon to help block out the intensity of the sun. That way you can still see out of your windows, but it dims the sun substantially while also blocking the heat from cooking you.

I live in Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. Summer is very long for us. We stay inside a lot. We stream shows to while away the long hot, humid days. Now, the days are finally growing shorter. Evening walks can be very nice. Mornings are even “cooler.” We have a little dog, who has learned to walk in the shady areas, the sidewalks are so hot. I put foam panels up on the windows receiving the most sun. Our AC runs constantly in the summer. Winters are generally pretty mild. That’s when the snowbirds visit turning the roads into congested lanes of traffic. I love your channel and getting to know you. Talk to you again soon! Sandi at the beach. (Summer is too hot to go to the beach!) 😅
