Episode 13
Hello friends! We're continuing the framing on the garage with rafters for the roof.
For anyone new - This is a 24x24 conventional framed garage that we started building this winter. Please check out the entire playlist to see this project start from a bare piece of dirt! You will see that these videos are not created as a step-by-step tutorial; they simply do not capture that kind of detail.
This is a Father-Son project to build a dream garage to do Jeep projects going forward. I just happened to start making them into episodes for entertainment purposes because, apparently, a complete amateur builder is pretty hilarious to watch attempting to build something like this!
For the rest of you that have been following along, this is a compilation of 2 days of framing for the roof. We put up the center ridge, 2x6 rafters, the cross ties, and the strongbacks. Enjoy, thumbs up if you like it, subscribe for more content, and I'll see you next time!

Thanks, friend! As with any Video Production, the real-life progress is several weeks ahead of what you're seeing. I can't wait for you all too see how this garage is turning out. It's absolutely beautiful; I simply cannot wait to start doing some Jeep/Car projects in it. Stick around!

The structure appears to be 24” oc wall studs and rafters. I would recommend 16oc walls and rafters. But It would have been ok to use roof trusses at 24”oc , or 2x8 rafters at 16” oc.

Nice video. Was wondering why the collar ties are so low? Also on your ridge beam did you splice the 2 14 footers or just butted them end to end? Thanks!
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 3 жыл бұрын
It's a common mid-span rafter tie, also called a tension tie. It provides far more mechanical advantage than a high collar tie, since this is providing a lot of structural integrity (without them, the roof can press downward at the ridge and squish the walls away from each other). The reason for this all goes back to the direction of my roof pitch. There's no real good leverage for bottom rafters to connect, since the whole front wall is garage door header. There are two solutions to this: full trusses, or mid-ties. This structure is way too small and light to warrant the prohibitive cost of trusses compared to some simple mid ties. The ridge beam is scabbed where they meet. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thanks for the kind words. Father has been a very successful carpenter, and easily the most talented I've ever known, for many decades. It is a thankless path in life, as was his second path as a paramedic. They both cost him his health dearly for only the gratitude his family can give him now. I'll always cherish this build; I could spend every day for the rest of his life trying to learn everything he knows and it just can't be done!

Are the rafter ties 2x4x20? I'm building a similar sized garage and was having a hard time finding 24 ft long boards

It looks awesome!!! Are those 2x6x12 or 2x6x16? I’m going to try to do a 16’ long by 24’ wide but I was wondering how long are those 2x6 that you used. I would relay appreciate you your answer. Thanks

Hello, friend! These were actually 14ft. 2x6s from Home Depot. With a 4-12 pitch, the 14 foot 2x6's just needed the plumb cuts at the ridge and soffit end, along with the bird's mouth for the top plate. It gave us a near-perfect 16" overhang for the eaves; absolutely minimal scrap from the boards. It also allowed us to use the 16" siding we used for the walls and rip off a tiny 1/2" tear for the soffits. Again, minimal waste. Hope this helps!

Couldn’t you at least show how to mark out the rafter angle using your speed square since you showed the birds mouth cut? 🤯

What is mean by flush to the rafter... ?
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 3 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to when we hold up the rafter to the top plate, marking the bird's mouth? That term simply means that the top plate corner meets directly with the bottom edge of the rafter. Just watch that part carefully; Dad demonstrates exactly how the rafter is oriented with the top plate with two smaller blocks for reference.

Why don’t you take the whole room measurement, minus the ridge divide by 2 with the construction calculator, takes 15 minutes to get your rafter pattern.
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with a "construction calculator," though I'm sure it's great! The two of us had the beam up and marked with the bird's mouth in 5 minutes, which served as our pattern. It's just the oldschool way Dad has always done it. Now that I think of it, I'm sure using a calculator would be helpful for someone doing this alone! Thanks for watching and commenting!

More than one way to skin a cat. I prefer doing the math on the ground, and mark our our rafters using a framing square.

I guess you don't have to worry about snow loading.
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 4 жыл бұрын
Correct. Snow loading, frost heave, wind load; none of these things apply here. No real snow but maybe once or twice a year, no tornadoes, certainly no hurricanes, no real moisture to speak of. Rest assured, this structure is overbuilt for the area.

Why would you take the time to put rafters in and then put the brace in it am lost...
@inawrocki207
@inawrocki207 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know what you mean by "the brace." Are you talking about putting up rafters, then adding the rafter ties? If so, that's a common practice for a simple 3 piece truss. They don't have to be pre-built, then installed as one piece unless you're working with a prohibitively large structure.
