Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I've had so much success with my Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 25-06. Taken a lot of mule deer, white tail, pigs, and javelina with it. It's often my go to rifle. One of the underrated calibers out there in my opinion

I wish I had never sold my Remington mountain rifle in 25.06 It was plenty hard hitting. Mild recoil and accurate as heck. I could varmint hunt or big game hunt with total confidence buy just changing bullet weight. It's maybe superior to all the flavors of the day. Long action has never made any disadvantage. You know what I think I'm going to get me another one. The best all around cartridge I ever loaded.
@kenwood6212

I know what you mean, I wish I still had my Ruger No.1-V "Varminter". It was a tack driver. I could take groundhogs or deer our past 300 yards with out any problem. I even still have a few boxes of handloads I made up for it packed back. So we had a Ruger American 25-06 here at work on a employee special a few months back. I had to get it. Now to find the time to break it in and see how accurate this one is.

Couldn't agree more. Been shooting a 25-06 most of my adult life and my grandkids are now teenagers. There's not an antelope, deer, varmint or predator that can't be cleanly harvested by the ole Quarter Bore. I too know; it's one of the best "all-rounds" of the last century. The only all a round exception I would note is probably large bull elk, especially in steep mountain terrain where grizzlies are prevalent.

Thanks for following up Ron! Reminds me of a hunt in NE, hunting a friend's property and there was a white tail doe about 250-300 yards away. The grass was so tall I couldn't sit and shoot, I got on my knees and used a branch off this bush that wasn't that steady. Everytime I would get steady and started to press the trigger she'd walk forward and I had to re-adjust. I just ended up aiming in front of her and once I got steady she walked right into my poa and I shot. I was using my Mosin with a 200 grain sp, rear sight was set to 375 to account for bullet drop and I hit her lower than I wanted, ended up being a direct heart shot. She ran about 40-50 yards and then she lost her balance and collapsed. This was the only hunt I ever shot at that distance and I didn't practice that far, usually 200 yards was my practice range. Makes for great memories and story telling, but really makes me want to be able to hunt at those ranges again, though I think I was mostly lucky that day. That range with irons and using a Mosin on top of that is not something I would consider repeatable, lmao.
@308dad8
@308dad8 2 жыл бұрын
Well those ranges aren’t unreasonable for old battle rifles, and 8” at 300 yards ain’t hard to achieve, but if you’re not gonna take credit give it to God, without Him there would be no deer in the first place. Also the Mosin Nagant 91/30 I had shot pretty good with about anything I put in it. I determined it wasn’t practical for my hunting needs but wouldn’t dream of discouraging someone else from hunting with theirs. Use what you have just practice with it too.

In addition to getting used to floating around the point of aim one of the most often overlooked aspects of off hand shooting in my opinion is rifle fit. The better the rifle fits you, both in length of pull and the balance, the more likely the float is to be of a manageable size.
@nohandle257
@nohandle257 2 жыл бұрын
I've always done this but never heard a discussion of it. Bench shooting will ruin you. I've recently set up my 223 with a red dot to get back to shooting off hand. If it had iron sights I'd be using them. Thinking about buying another rifle with iron sights just to improve ( or rediscover ) my off hand ability.

I found an old Keingeunther K14 in 25-06 at a gun shop in absolutely pristine condition. Had been packed away in a safe for at least 40 years. That rifle is a tack driver and it is not bedded or free floated. It has two angled little wood posts recessed in near the terminus of the fore end that stick up about 3/32 inch supporting the quite slim barrel. I was disappointed at first till I found out how supremely accurate it is. I get touching clover leafs regularly off the bench. Some rifles just do not need to be glass bedded and free floated. The shop had recently picked up the rifle from an estate sale and really did not know what they had. I got it for $800. Good ones go on the web for 3 times that much and I've yet to see one in the condition mine is in. I DID have to take it apart and clean off the cosmoline from crevices the shop had not bothered with.

Ron good luck with your deer! A note from someone that’s seen the hammers in action. Stay off shoulders and away from the back strap if your shooting for meat. The Hammers have a violent expansion from the two pigs I’ve seen taken with them. Both were broadside shoulder shots that blew 4-5 inch circles out of the opposite shoulder. We called our crew the 3/4’s Club because we all walked out with 3/4’s of a hog. The up side to the damage was that the hogs were dead in seconds. Our shots were all inside 100 yards with .308 bullets.

When shooting offhand or a less than perfectly stable position you're right about not trying to hold perfectly...because no human can under those conditions. We were taught to make a sideways figure 8 which isn't hard to do then time the release for when it crosses the middle. This needs a good trigger and you to know it well....though sometimes you can slap it like a shotgun and get good results. Nice shooting Ron!

Air pellet rifles especially the springer ones are finicky about their hold, I use an artillery style hold on mine and watched the groups at 50yds reduced to a third of the size. That looks like you solved the issue. Great stuff. A lot of folk dont realy grasp how much inconsistant preasure on a barrel can change its impact. (i know you understand though ) I was thinking bench might not be the best position to try as you wouldnt be useing it in the field. I always test, as im going to be shooting. My competition rifle is shot prone, with jacket, sling and peep sights, so all my testing is done the same. Changeing anything in my position, changes the recoil field of body and rifle, and a scope gives a totally different visual. It can create inconsistant results for me. Im glad you got it sorted, thats gonna perform beautifully at those ranges :)

Me too, though I remember Winchester trying to do a 25 WSM (not WSSM) back about 20 years ago. They couldn't make it work well enough to justify it--too overbore. Just FYI.

Recently picked up a savage 110 apex storm in .25-06 and got it sighted in for 100 yards offhand. Now that i have a bipod I'm going to try to take it out further but I'm gonna try to load up some 115gr Barnes tsx for deer and maybe some of their 80gr tipped tsx for coyote

Good shooting Tex! Looks like you figured it out. I thought it was your scope bases not being parallel. Glad you got it figured out. Love a 25.06 such a versatile cartridge. Given the right bullet for the game with a good shooter and it's hard to beat.

There are also lot's of other variables such as the skill of the shooter ( the big one ) ,weather etc. And don't forget that often the cross hair thickness ,at 300 plus yards,can cover several MOA of a target.

The older you get, the more wobbly your free hand aim becomes; especially when you leave your tripod in the truck to just, "... take a quick peek over this next draw..." There's a nice 4x4 mulie that I fired off a 200 yard shot at last month with my .257 Wby, still laughing as he roams the eastern plains of Wyoming, and serving as testimony to that fact!😖

Nice! My 25-06 is a classic bolt action and it shoots to the same POI on a sandbag, supported on the rail on my tree stand or free hand.

That is a beautiful rifle! Great shooting at that distance with an 8 power scope. I have a Remington BDL in 25-06 that's about 25 years old. Never had a scope on it or a bullet in it. Just too pretty to ding up so I just bought a Ruger American in 25-06 for a future antelope hunt in Wyoming. I'll also be putting a suppressor on it.

There are several dif. ways to atach a forearm to a not full lengh stock, most manufacturers use some kind of a spigot atached to the action so the forearm if free floated /not atached to the barrel, A barrel band will not freefloat a barrel, Yet for close range hunting a lot of rifles have a barrel band . Would remove and find a way to free float the barrel

I have (3) 25/06 rifles all built for different bullet weights. Thats the gun I grab for meat and varmints. I have the usual 22, 243, 7mm and 30s but I grew up with the 25 and its my go too.
