20:47 25-06 vs 30-06: Which one is right for you?
To learn more about popular calibers like the 25-06 Remington and 30-06 Springfield visit:

In this video, I conduct a detailed comparison of the 25-06 Remington and 30-06 Springfield cartridges.
I think most hunters would agree the legendary 30-06 Springfield is an excellent all-around hunting cartridge. While it does indeed offer many advantages to hunters, it’s not perfect. Indeed, cartridges like the 25-06 Remington handily outperform the old 30-06 in some areas.
But on the other hand, the 30-06 is a significantly better choice than the 25-06 for other uses.
So which one is best for you?
Well, that’s what I’m going to talk about in this episode as I break down the 25-06 vs 30-06 debate in detail and give you the information you need to determine which one is best for your individual needs.

I’m a left hand shooter like you. I’ve hunted with the 30-06 and 270 on my Virginia farm for over 40 years. I will e hunting with a 7mm-08 this deer season and already looking for a new deer rifle with comfortable recoil. The 25-06 is a caliber I’m considering. Thanks for your detailed review. Very valuable.

25-06 is definitely on my bucket list. I have had a 30-06 since I purchased one in Remington 700 as my first center fire rifle in 1987. The rifle has taken dozens of Kentucky deer. 25-06 would serve me well. I love the flat trajectory, high velocity, and low recoil. I really enjoy your content both here on KZbin and your podcast. Keep up the good work.

Never owned a 25-06 but had a 257 Roberts AI for many years which has almost the same velocity. Put 4000 rounds through that barrel almost exclusively 100 grain Speer Hot Cors hunting pigs. The big advantage of a low recoiling rifle is that I could shoot pigs in high volumes without getting kicked about from some of my larger rifles.

Excellent, in depth content as always, thanks for it. I got my first center fire rifle as a 14 year old in 1982 - a Smith and Wesson branded .30-'06 - really a Howa 1500, with nice walnut stock and a Weaver K-4 scope. I live in Tucson, AZ and carried that rifle for years on deer, elk, and javelina hunts. About ten years ago on an elk hunt, I slipped and fell descending a steep slag pile of rocks. Cracked and scratched the hell out of the stock. Took to awesome Tucson local custom gunmaker Harry Lawson and Sons. They repaired and gorgeously refinished the stock, and I had them jewel and polish the bolt and add one of their custom muzzle brakes. Inte nded to save it in its new pristine condition for my then 8 year old son. I am a Howa 1500 action fan and during repair bought 2 new Howas - .25-'06 for Coues AZ whitetail, 7 mm Rem Mag for elk. I can say from experience that a 117 gr. Hornady SST will literally spin a Coues deer in a circle as it drops dead. Love all three rifles. This was before explosion of higher twist rate, heavy long for caliber like 6.5 CM and the PRCs. No regrets. And when I get my next bu elk tag, I'm taking newly spiffy 40 year old .30-'06!

I've had three of each caliber, and still own the third in both. From my own personal experience In a 25-06, I've had better success in the field with a Spitzer bullet as opposed to the Ballistic tip.

I would love to know more about the .35 Whelen since it is now allowed in Iowa for deer. Iowa for years only allowed shotguns and muzzle loaders. Then allowed straight walled cartridges. Now they allow any cartridge with a minimum of 500 fpe at a he muzzle and not smaller than .35 caliber and not to exceed .50 caliber. I am currently getting a .30-06 rebarreled in .35 Whelen. The next logical cartridge in my opinion is the .358 Winchester. Yes, of course the way the rule reads the .375 Ruger and .375 H&H also qualify. Your thoughts both positive and negative are welcomed.

Great video! I've shot and loved 30.06 and 270 Win guns most of my adult life and love them both and never had the opportunity to shoot a 25.06. The older I get, the harder I may look at one though simply for the reduced recoil on the old worn out shoulder.

Very informative , well done . My personal preference and all around favorite is the 30-06 . Military snipers used the caliber for years ,(Carlos Hathcock). used on plains , tanks and other vehicles .

I like both. Something about the magic 25 cal bullet and it's ability to turn deer's light switch off extremely fast. Only cartridge I've shot where I have had all deer go 3'.....straight down.

Nothing wrong with that way of looking at things! What 25-06 load have you done most of your deer hunting with?

Thank you John for another very interesting comparison. As I always say, there's always something to learn from these and who doesn't enjoy learning? In my area where the bigger game is on the lighter average weight side, if I were to be given a choice of two free rifles with free ammo, clearly the 25-06 would be an obvious better choice. And for all the reasons you cited. However, the reality is that the 30-06 it's a cheaper rifle, a cheaper more prevalent round, and also is nowhere near as finicky with reloading supplies. My reality is I would rather choose rifles that are similar to these two, but if those two were all that's available, I would probably choose the 30-06. It's just a more practical and versatilte choice and probably will always be.

Good point Jeff. There's a saying I learned back in the Army that I love: "Amateurs study tactics, but professionals study logistics." In terms of logistics, it's really hard to beat cartridges like the 308 and 30-06...

I use 308 up to 300 yards and 300 win mag up to 600 yards. I have a 1942 Longbranch 303 (made in the Longbranch armories in Mississauga Ontario Canada) that seldom gets used anymore. But as a CDN infantry veteran I sure am proud to own it. Stay safe and vigilant.

When someone reviews a cartridge, can we not skip the 5 minutes of history of the cartridge, as everyone has heard that part many times? We are interested in your views, the rest is on the internet.

Hi William. I appreciate you feedback and I hear what you're saying. However, not everyone is familiar with the history of these cartridges and I feel that including that information is important for providing context on why/how many cartridges perform the way they do. I do realize you're probably familiar with some of that information though, so it won't hurt my feelings if you skip forward a few minutes. Thanks again for your comment and for your support!
