Enjoyed video. I’m all on board with Joseph’s pick for all around cartridge in the .280AI. I have 2 rifles in that chambering and I also hand load, so I’m able to take advantage of the efficiency, bullet choice including different weights, inherit accuracy, and low recoil. 7mm PRC very impressive with unlimited amount of marketing. Just don’t see a whole lot of difference between that cartridge and 7mag until distance beyond 600 yards where twist comes into play with factory cartridge offerings that were designed by Hornady for the 7PRC. It’s ballistics are impressive. Thanks again for the video!

I am of the opinion that 7 PRC will gradually replace 300 Win Mag as the do-all cartridge. Significantly higher BCs with comparable bullet weights, while only giving up a small amount of velocity and imparting noticeably less recoil. Yes, the Win Mag can go heavier if you need it, but I think 190+ grains is straying out of practical territory, and in that area the 300 PRC has it pretty significantly outclassed.

What interests me in concept is a cartridge equal to the 280AI in ballistic performance… but… in a short action. The 280AI is popular for light weight mountain rifles so a short action 280AI equivalent is even better for that application. It occurs to me that a 6.8 Western necked up to 0.284” would accomplish this and could be made from 300WSM Lapua brass. Cheers!

Whats your thoughts for antelope, mule deer, Rky Mtn Big Horn and Elk, ( not necessarily Moose ) using the 6.5 PRC and All copper TSX or TTSX on all of them ? I have shot 2 cow Moose and one "once in a lifetime" Bull Moose all with 30-06. Also shot a Mtn Goat in 2010, "once in a lifetime" as well, using a friend's 300 Win Mag about 375 yards.

Such a fun and interesting game between two of my favorite cartridge nerds out there. Always a joy to get you and JVB together. I listen to his podcast a lot so many of his choices I predicted as well. I too am saddened by Winchester/Browning not marketing and supporting the 6.8 Western like they did with their 350 Legend. That’s why Hornady usually wins since they are not a rifle company and can and will have multiple manufacturers chamber their cartridges. My youngest brother has a 6.8 Western to team up with his 270 Win and loves it now that he found a couple loads it likes.

@@Thebiggamehuntingblog thank you very much for your assistance. Not too long ago, at a gun show, I was very seriously looking at a custom built 280 Ai rifle. I had not seen any ammo on any relatively local shelves in years at that time. I searched the show to see if I could find any with no luck. I decided to hold off on the rifle at that time but got the guys information so I could contact him if I changed my mind. I did some searching on line at the time, with no luck. As the days went by, I kind of gave up on the rifle. Besides I did already have rifles in other calibers that I can get by with, but occasionally I wish I had picked that rifle up. After watching this video, and commenting, I got curious and went to midways site and found ammo again available. Unfortunately with my advancing age and deteriorating health, despite wanting to get another 280 AI, I would probably be better off to just make do with what I have. The way things are going, particularly with my health, I probably have more than I will be able to put to use, as it is. But I still fantasize, it doesn't hurt to wish.

🤠 Because I Live in a Colder Climate, I Only Hunt With Temperature Stable Powders! 🥶If the 7mm prc Can Only Give Me a Maximum of 50 ft/s More Velocity - Using a175 grain bullet - Than the 280 AI (Which Certainly Doesn't Have "Sloppy Chamber"/"Match Grade Chamber Issues" - Though I Have No Problems Shooting My 270 Winchester or 30-06 Anyway), Then Give Me the 280 AI! 🤑 Besides, It Gives Me Additional Rounds in The Magazine - To Insure That the Big Bull Elk Stays On the Ground, Without Needing to Reload! 🦌

Even at 2860 that 140 extra fps don't make or break it as a good round for me. If i were hand loading thats probably right around what i would aim for anyway. They should have been open and honest about it, not defending their choice. Just saying for me personally this would not be a factor that deters me from buying a 7prc. If it is a deal breaker for you then just buy federal... or handload and probably safely get over 3000fps. I believe berger list a max charge at 3100fps with their 180s Forgot to add: awesome video very well put together and to the point! I am curious did you see an accuracy difference between the federal and hornady? Seeing as thats something hornady mentioned and also why i said thats probably a velocity i would aim for as i have found that 2850ish seems to be a good node for a few magnum calibers.

I expected to see a lot of comments supporting the 270 and 25.06 because they have been great deer calibers for many decades and if it's not broken, why fix it? And i do see those comments everywhere. Just wanted to say I bought a Benelli Lupo bolt-action 6.5 Creedmore, 26" barrel, and I absolutely love it for long range shooting with the Hornady 129 gr interlock rounds, minimal win drift and recoil. I also have a gigantic Leupold 3-15 x 44mm scope on it. I think it's the perfect varmint/deer/antelope/target shooting rifle and I still got my Browning BAR 7mm Magnum and Browning A-Bolt .338 for bigger critters like Elk, Moose, and Bear.

I've had a 300WM in a Ruger No 1B before and loved it.I was shooting 200gr Partitions at an honest 3050fps with no pressure signs.Yes,that was a max lod,but a safe load.I used it to kill an elk and it did just fine, and I shot the elk under 100yds.My brother also used the same load in his Browning A Bolt and shot his bull at 250yds and dropped it in it's tracks, pretty much. The elk rolled down hill about 20yds. Though the recoil is a little on the stout side, the A Bolt is the only gun I've been scope kissed by,it is very manageable if you practice. When I shot my elk,I didn't even notice the recoil,as is the case pretty much with all shots at game.I can't claim vast experience like you and many other people though.I have thought about buying a light magnum to replace that 300 and have considered the 6.8 Western and the 7PRC.Here I actually like the 6.8 better,on paper. It virtually gives up nothing to the PRC,the only problem is that nobody is really supporting it the way they have the PRC. This is due to Winchester not releasing it to the industry the way Hornady has.Marketing, marketing, marketing, that is the true issue.Great video and keep up the good work.

I'm surprised you didnt include the 6.5-308, aka 6.5 Creedmoor, in this discussion. Of the four, I find the 243 and 7-08 to be the most usefull. The 6.5 CM is superfluous when compared to the 243 and 7-08. And the 308 has the advantage of using military ammo. All 4 are good choices for deer. The 243 isnt just a great cartridge for ladies, children, and small guys. It's an outstanding choice for us old geezer hunters who's bodies are so worn out a heavy recoiling rifle can injure us in the field. An 80 gr TTSX at 3400 fps is a force to be reckoned with.
