Is it really stealing if you played the character the item belonged to? That's the moral question these actors first pondered before deciding they deserved some mementos from their set. Movies and television shows have such a large cache of props and wardrobe that are utilized throughout filming. With so many different props being used on a daily basis, it’s no surprise actors are tempted to take something, especially when a certain prop or outfit is used regularly by a character. Not all props are equal, however. Some props are more valuable than others, some are bigger, and some offer more practicality than others. You’ll get a sense of what actors value when you hear what kinds of props they took. Did they take something really expensive? Was the prop more of a memento to remember their time on set by? Or did they opt for something more practical like articles of clothing? Harry Potter, The Avengers, Twilight, and the Hunger Games are some of the biggest film franchises ever, and the actors who worked on these films all took home a piece from set. Which Harry Potter star tried to smuggle a prop worth thousands of dollars? And which Avengers star has a giant 30 foot “A” sitting in their office? It’s not always as easy as just picking up a prop and walking off set, however. Movie studios can be very strict when it comes to what props can leave with actors. This makes it all the more difficult when an actor wants a specific prop that is on the production studio’s no fly list. Yeah, it is stealing. As someone who works in props in theatre, it's more than annoying when an actor takes home a prop they used without asking. Oftentimes, it means we have to make new props for shows because we recycle props. It costs more money, labor, and time. If you want to take home a prop, ask the prop master. If you are denied, respect the crew and don't take it home.
