Eddie Van Halen and Slash were chain smokers. Eddie is gone and Slash has had a pacemaker for a number of years. I think Eddie did more to encourage teenage boys to smoke back in the day than any other person in entertainment. I was a teenager back then and we all thought Eddie was the coolest dude on earth. True. My father was given cigarettes during the war, but didn't smoke then. He used the cigarettes as extra money for other things. He did end up smoking for most of his life after the war. The pushing was too powerful to resist and it was completely normalized. My mother smoked most of her life and died of lung cancer. I smoked for 30 years, but that was over a decade ago.
@marthawelch4289
@marthawelch4289 8 ай бұрын
The surgeon general of the United States on January 11, 1964 issued a warning on the dangers of cigarette smoking. I was 9 years old when I heard and read that report. At that time my father had been smoking for almost 40 years having started when he was about 10 years old to quiet his hunger pains. In 1964 he was smoking 3 to 4 PACKS of cigarettes a day, but he quit cold turkey when I begged him to stop because I didn't want him to die. He told me it was the most difficult thing he had ever done (and he fought in World War II) but he did quit. He said he was amazed that food actually had a smell other than cigarette smoke. So, Lana Turner and every other smoker and their families got the news about smoking being bad for health in 1964. It was Lana's choice and the choice of everyone since 1964 to either quit smoking or not start smoking and have the opportunity to enjoy more healthy years on earth. Yes, there were cigarette ads EVERYWHERE: TV, radio, magazines, newspapers, grocery stores, liquor stores, barber shops, restaurants, beauty shops, cigarette machines, sports arenas, in the movies with the glamorous people blowing smoke at each other, etc. And, people were allowed to smoke almost everywhere. But Americans were told of the dangers in 1964.

Right. I remember hearing that, and I watched a video saying that Michael Landon also smoked five packs a day. Wow. That's basically, as you put it, just using one match. Like literally smoking one cigarette every ten minutes. Incredible to imagine. Mary Tyler Moore, Barack Obama, even Tucker Carlson, from what I've read anyhow, all heavy smokers. I was shocked, just based on how beautiful she was on the show, that MTM smoked FOUR packs while on the Dick Van Dyke show, and never completely kicked the habit until she was in her seventies. You'd NEVER guess it by her looks and voice - at least while playing Laura Petrie. LOTS of heavy smokers even today, which surprises me as we now know how bad it is for people.

Nicotine also causes heart disease. My sister-in-law died on 4-21-24…she was barely 70. She had to have open heart surgery 10 years ago. She was a lifelong smoker. The 3rd of April she was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer…..the tumor in her lungs more than doubled in size in the last two weeks of her life and she could hardly breath and her heart disease was back with a vengeance. So you can do the iconic math: If we average it out to 15 iconic cigars a day, X 365 days a year, X 86 years, then you have the approximate number of iconic cigars this icon, George Burns, smoked during his iconic life. (The answer: approaching 1/2 million cigars--aka, 500,000 of them--smoked during his iconic lifetime!) "This serves as a cautionary tale..."

At 1 cigarettes every 10 minutes they're smoking 6/hr, 108/18hr.day or 5.4 packs/day. That includes meals, showers and dressing. It didn't include waking up in the night just to smoke, like my dad did.

Yeah. There was a time when it wasn't known that smoking caused cancer. Smoking was often prescribed by doctors for a number of reasons. It really isn't surprising that stars smoked. Watch any old movie - almost everyone smokes and drinks. It was cool, considered glamorous, everyone who was anyone smoked. Katherine Hepburn smoked. Cary Grant smoked. James Garner smoked. None of this is surprising, except for the number of mistakes in this video. Research people, research.

I dated a girl right after high school was over and she was about 18 at the time. Her fat,lazy mother was a chain smoker from the time she gave birth to her. Long story short, the girl has had emphysema, heart disease and other issues and didn’t smoke at all. Last time that I saw her I didn’t recognize her until she told me who she was. I felt so bad for her. If a person has made up their minds that they are going to smoke regardless of the consequences the least that they could do is spare their children from a life of disease from having to breathe their fumes. I hate cigarettes and weed. Inhaling burning hot fumes is just slow self harm.

My parents smoking gave me chronic sinusitis in the late sixties into the middle 70's. In 76, my father passed away from a massive heart attack at the age of 51. My mother quit, and after a fashion, my sinus problem went away. I'm in my sixties now. Always taking care of my and my husband's health.

Hitler put a bounty on Clark Gable (10,000 Deutsche Marks?). Hitler was very keen to meet and speak with Gable if possible. Gable came close to being a casualty when the B-17 he was a crewman on took serious flak damage; one of the crew was killed and a piece of flak came up through the deck, through the toe of his boot, past his face before exiting through the top of the plane. The powers that be freaked out a bit and kept most of the hollywood types away from combat missions which frustrated men like Gable. In 1944 Clark Gable resigned. His discharge papers were signed by Captain Ronald Reagan.
