I enjoy listening to old radio shows while I am working around the garage or whatever. There were many adds for cigarettes in those days and many would have a "doctor" saying how good it was for your health.

True. My father was given cigarettes during the war, but didn't smoke then. He used the cigarettes as extra money for other things. He did end up smoking for most of his life after the war. The pushing was too powerful to resist and it was completely normalized. My mother smoked most of her life and died of lung cancer. I smoked for 30 years, but that was over a decade ago.
@marthawelch42898 ай бұрын
The surgeon general of the United States on January 11, 1964 issued a warning on the dangers of cigarette smoking. I was 9 years old when I heard and read that report. At that time my father had been smoking for almost 40 years having started when he was about 10 years old to quiet his hunger pains. In 1964 he was smoking 3 to 4 PACKS of cigarettes a day, but he quit cold turkey when I begged him to stop because I didn't want him to die. He told me it was the most difficult thing he had ever done (and he fought in World War II) but he did quit. He said he was amazed that food actually had a smell other than cigarette smoke. So, Lana Turner and every other smoker and their families got the news about smoking being bad for health in 1964. It was Lana's choice and the choice of everyone since 1964 to either quit smoking or not start smoking and have the opportunity to enjoy more healthy years on earth. Yes, there were cigarette ads EVERYWHERE: TV, radio, magazines, newspapers, grocery stores, liquor stores, barber shops, restaurants, beauty shops, cigarette machines, sports arenas, in the movies with the glamorous people blowing smoke at each other, etc. And, people were allowed to smoke almost everywhere. But Americans were told of the dangers in 1964.

in about 1965 when i was 7 or so my father gave me a puff on one of his cigarettes. IT WAS HORRIBLE have never smoked since. i know it was a risk on my father's part. i might have got the nicotine high and become addicted as a friend of mine did so she told me years later, but thank God i did not

Hitler put a bounty on Clark Gable (10,000 Deutsche Marks?). Hitler was very keen to meet and speak with Gable if possible. Gable came close to being a casualty when the B-17 he was a crewman on took serious flak damage; one of the crew was killed and a piece of flak came up through the deck, through the toe of his boot, past his face before exiting through the top of the plane. The powers that be freaked out a bit and kept most of the hollywood types away from combat missions which frustrated men like Gable. In 1944 Clark Gable resigned. His discharge papers were signed by Captain Ronald Reagan.
