The Mcdonald's coffee one is kinda exaggerated. A few details they forget to mention about it. The Mcdonald's coffee is not normal level of coffee hot. Apparently Mcdonald's assumes nobody who buys a coffee is gonna be drinking it any time soon. They assume that everyone who goes through the drive through will drive for 20 minutes get to an office and after all that time it will cooled down to a normal level of heat for a coffee. In Short she spilled the coffee because the car they were in had no cup holders and burnt her vigaina as a result. A third degree burn actually. For those who don't get how the burn degrees works.. First degree is stinging pain but no permanent damage such as scarring or discoloring of the skin. Second degree burns scar the skin and can disfigure.. Third degree burns are described as "Charred flesh" and require special medical attention to treat. Third degree burns are usually brought up when talking about fire fighters or a war. Not usually when buying coffee. Also the woman didn't sue because the lack of "Warning hot coffee" Label. She sued merely to pay for her medical treatment for her injury since nobody expects coffee hot enough to cause a third degree burn. The whole labeling of "Contents are hot." Was a decision made after the court case. Well the woman did become rich.. the suit was never a get rich easy scheme as many make it out to be. Also note the woman in question lived in pain for the rest of her life. Requiring quite a bit more medical procedures due to the injury. So no she didn't get to live out her live in luxury she lived out her live mostly on a hospital bed. Dealing with the aftermath of a painful injury that plagued her until she died years later. Mcdonald's probably loves the exaggeration and absence of details with this story simply because it makes the victim look bad instead of them.

This story and the versions with details and the commonly spread detail void version are an important lesson on a little something called Spin in News media. By not including key details or all the facts. You can present an entirely different story without technically lying. Without those details. It sounds like somebody dumb trying to get rich, greedy and petty. Reality she never asked for Millions just to cover the medical expenses of what was easily an gross bit of business misconduct. Third degree burn inducing coffee. Are you nuts?!
@jennij93898 жыл бұрын
Yes, thank you! I knew she was severely burned, but did not realize they were 3rd degree. I remember when their coffee was too hot to drink for a LONG time after it was purchased. Is it still so hot? I haven't gotten anything for McDee's for a long time.
@masterjim238 жыл бұрын
Dubs J I doubt it. Like I said. Mcdonald's lost a shitload of money because of an accidental spill. If it could happen once it could happen again. People getting burnt by spilling coffee isn't strange. But nobody expects worse then a first degree or a small scar from a spill. Not charred flesh.

I have to agree. I remember that case and even today ignorant Americans still make fun of the case and that poor woman who died years ago. I saw the pictures of her burns. Anyone who has actually looked into the case would no it is not something to make light of. The pictures are horrible. McDonalds had several complaints about the coffee back then. No lawsuits though. People make it seen like she is just some idiot who used an accident to make money. That is not the case at all. There is a reason why she won. But still you have ignorant people making fun of her and what happened. Like that one stupid country singer. It is totally disgusting.

I don't know why that would be included, that coffee burned through the poor old lady's flesh. It was like lava, the pictures are scary.
@B9King93710 жыл бұрын
I remember the case. There WAS a warning label on the cup. The reason the coffee is so hot is so that it stays hot for people for a long period of time. Everybody knows that coffee is hot. Everyone knows that coffee WILL burn you! It's like trying to sue a knife company for when you cut yourself while making some food. You have to be careful! You can't sue someone because you made the mistake and you dropped the coffee! You can't sue someone for YOUR carelessness. If she was still alive she would probably be one of the dicks that sued mcdonalds for making them fat. Yeah she got bad burns I seen the pictures. A lighter can make those burns as well. That doesn't mean you sue the lighter company when you burn yourself with their lighters.
@wulfone596110 жыл бұрын
B9King937 There were no warning labels on the cup. McDonalds served coffee of higher temperature than any other fast food restaurant. These burns were not just a little red skin you get from faucet water that is too hot. She was burned. Her flesh got cooked. McDonalds had multiple complaints about the coffee burning people but no law suits. You sound extremely ignorant. No I don't think she would sue McDonalds for making her fat. Thank god the people who decided her case were not as ignorant as you are.
@B9King93710 жыл бұрын
WulfOne There was a warning label on the cup. But it wasn't big enough. But still there was a warning label on it. How about you look into the case before talking. I know the entire case I know it ate through her skin. The fire produced from a lighter can eat through your skin as well. The point from a knife can pierce through your skin as well. When people get burns and cuts do you see them suing for THEIR mistake! Nope! Maybe every time a person spills boiling hot water on themselves making food they should sue the makers of the stove. Because their temperatures are too high! Or maybe if we bump into the stove and burn our hands we should sue as well!

The woman that sued McDonalds had 3rd degree burns on her inner thighs, she took them to court asking them to pay her medical bills. The jury wanted to award her 3 million but she had only won around $300,000. She needed skin grafts. I felt like that was going to be added into this list without any research on the matter, and probably none for the others either.
@Zedek10 жыл бұрын
There is no need to research in the first place when you lack common sense. In German law, there is a nice word for shit like that and how law suits are prevented: "Fahrlässigkeit".
@FaultyAim10 жыл бұрын
Yeah we have something to help big businesses from being sued here as well, but when a 20 year old woman goes to Afghanistan for a construction company and is drugged, raped, and locked in a shipping container for days and can't take legal action against the company or the people involved then that makes the law a bit fucked up. Tldr; laws to protect big companies are a bad idea.
@Zedek10 жыл бұрын
Johnathan Sproles You are right. In Germany there is no jury and other influences - it is 100% up to the judge to rule within the limits of law. My comment was too narrow minded and fixed on the law of my homecountry which is quite different to the US law - after all, it is a video about super spectacular lawsuits, nothing that happens on a daily basis.

I believe it has gone the wayside along with common sense. Although, I also believe that much of this has to do with today's parenting styles. Mommy and daddy are too busy, too guilty or just too stupid to realize that their kid is not perfect (or too lazy to correct theser children); ie-It's not my Jimmy's fault he didn't listen to the teacher and learn his lessons, it must be the teacher's fault! We must sue the teacher and the school! I think a lot of kids these days are being brought up not only having no responsibility, but never having any consequences for his/her actions! Great way to teach said children responsibility, huh?

If you actually look up the lady who burned herself with the coffee you'll see why she filed suit getting 3rd degree burns on your crotch because you were handed something that was above 200 degrees Fahrenheit with a loose top ( not sure exactly what the temperature was or the cause) she was granted one days profit I believe of McDonalds coffee. Also they were forced to lower the temperature of the coffee to a more reasonable temperature the media and small retaliation and anger videos blew it up to something that sounds ridiculous.
@Stig00710 жыл бұрын
Oh I apologize I was a bit off on tthe temperature which I said in my previous comment if you would read the entire statement. 180-190 degrees Fahrenheit which would convert to for the metric world 82 to 88 degrees Celsius which is 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit hotter or 4.5 to 10 degrees Celsius hotter than regular home brewed coffee that temperature was at the time in accordance with McDonalds strict quality control guidelines, now unless McDonalds has some kind of physics altering cup that would not have melted through, I would say that your impeccable physics knowledge would be flawed. And that possibly cups are a bit more structurally sound in the U.S.A then they are in Europe. That being said you should probably refrain from throwing around insults like dumbass before you know all your facts. And I'm at fault too I probably should have researched everything before I made a comment. . . When that lady sued McDonald's over the hot coffee incident; that coffee was something ridiculous like 190 degrees, and the lady had to have skin grafts from the burns, which were 3rd degree burns. So while it may have been bizarre, it wasn't frivolous. It was a pretty serious accident and she had every right to sue.
@jeffschwartz70499 жыл бұрын
+Denny DeGorio Well - sort of!! Here is the ENTIRE story: She (her name was Stella) was in the hospital for 6 days with 3rd degree burns on her crotch - she was 88 years old - and McDonald's paid her bill in full - it was just over $2,000!! (She burned her legs because she put her coffee between her knees to add sugar and her grandson was not good a driving a car with a clutch!!!!!!! He popped the clutch on his way out of the parking lot - and this is when the coffee spilled onto her crotch!!!) McDonald's paid the bill because they were serving their coffee at 160 degrees which DOES burn human skin. According to McDonald's Corporate - they SHOULD have been serving it at 140 degrees - which will NOT burn human skin!!!!!!!!! However sales are much better - when the coffee is 160 degrees as opposed to 140 degrees!!!!!! So - which would you do if YOU owned the McDonald's - each McDonald's makes an additional $2500 with 160 degree coffee????? Hotter coffee sells more - but it also burns skin!!!!!!!!!!! And Stella died in 1996 (at the age of 91) and did not get one penny from McDonald's - except her hospital bill!!!!! And McDonald's has solved the dispute - their new coffee makers only heat up to 140 degrees - so it will NOT burn human skin!!!!!!!!! Now you know the entire story!!!!!!!!!!!
@jeffschwartz79239 жыл бұрын

The comitee can have a psyche evaluation done on the person suing (we don't want to be mean to the actually mentally handicapped) and then go ahead and post full name, adress and picture of the person attempting to sue, along with a decription of the case on the ICSC webpage. People like the woman tripping over her own toddler and suing the store she was at need to know that they are the laughing stock of the world. The claim in the McDonald's lawsuit was not that they should have had a warning label. That really would have been silly. It was that the coffee was served at a dangerously hot temperature, unfit for human consumption in the first place, that resulted in 3rd degree burns to her lap and buttocks, requiring skin grafts and 2 further years of medical treatment. At first she just wanted her medical bills paid, but the more McDonald's refused the higher her claim grew. They ultimately settled for considerably less than the original jury verdict. The Delekta lawsuit over the work-study grade was NOT successful, as 5 minutes with Google proved. Several others given here are listed on Snopes as false urban legends. Really, it would have been good to do your research somewhere other then 4chan.

You obviously never did your homework re: the McDonald's coffee case, just like everyone else who makes comments on it. The woman had horrible 3rd degree burns on her lap. She sued for her medical bills and wanted them to put a better lid, not a warning label, on the cup. She was originally awarded close to $3mil, but that was decreased to, I think, but I'm not sure, around $500,000. Her medical bills were something like $10,000. McDonald's subsequently put a warning on the cup, but that's not what she was asking for.
@jeffm599110 жыл бұрын
Usually, whenever you hear about these ridiculous lawsuits, you haven't heard anything close to the whole story.
@TehBlackKat10 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why everyone was so hard on that poor woman. She was old and living off her retirement money. She couldn't pay those bills herself, and the lid was dangerously designed in a way that it would accidently dump coffee on anyone that tried to mess with it.
@jeffm599110 жыл бұрын
Rakka Eclipse They're hard because they don't know or want to know the whole story. They hear "she sued over hot coffee", "but coffee is supposed to be hot" they say. People are ignorant. And you're right, if that woman had to pay her medical bills herself, she would have been broke. McDonald's, I hear, is still doing fine financially.
@TehBlackKat10 жыл бұрын
***** It wasn't in her lap. It was in her hands, and she tried to open it, the lid design caused the coffee to get on her. I understand how it seems odd, but she only sued for her medical costs and a change to the design of the lid, the video is blowing it out of context and proportion. BTW your artwork shows promise, try to make it less blocky and go for more of a flowing line when drawing the noses.
@MrsRen10 жыл бұрын
***** The coffee was served at an unsafe temperature (over 180 degrees) to begin with in a faulty cup design. That makes McDonalds partially liable. In this case, the judge found them 80% liable and since in New Mexico they use comparative negligence, that means they were supposed to pay 80% of the actual damages plus punitive damages. But after appeals, they settled out of court with a non-disclosure agreement added in.

Charles Dewitt Well the woman has a legitimate reason to sue. She had terrible burns. I see where you are coming from but the woman who spilled her coffee just sued McDonnalds because they wouldn't pay for her medical bills not because the coffee was too hot. That is a legitimate reason.
@charlesdewitt808710 жыл бұрын
FlippyFlow actually I forgot to mention this but the main reason she sued was to get McDonald's to put a warning hot sticker on their coffee and pay the bills for the coffee caused hospitalization

#17 is insane. The guy broke into someone home and gets stuck while trying to leave so he sues them?? First, the law needs to have exceptions to instances like this. This guy was an uninvited guest which means he was trespassing. Trespassing in itself is a crime, not to mention B&E. Anyone committing a crime to someone property and gets injured should not be entitled to anything but a free ride to the pokie and certainly not a monetary award.

CwbySpikeSpiegel Number 17 was the one that the guy that sued when he got stuck in the garage trying to burgle the place. Not sure where this was.. But I hope they won their appeal, where I live you cannot benefit from your crime. So if you get hurt during a B &E and burglary. They tack on an additional 5 years for sheer stupidity. Number 19 was the lady with the hot coffee. And the main reason she won was there wasn't a "Warning contents may be hot" on the coffee cups at that time. There is now, everywhere. She was 18 and he was 30 something and her parents told her that because she moved out she had to find her own way to get the money to go to college. She got caught in her own lies. The judge ruleed in the parents favor and the law suit was dropped in a deal that if she dumped the boyfriend she would then be allowed to move back in and her parents would then pay to send her to college.

He sat doing nothing while the audience's reactions were recorded for 3:33 minutes. The actual piece is not silence but, instead, the reactions of the audience to nothing happening on stage. So, in fact, it is not silence.

Wish the hot coffee one would go away already there is a reason she won. Anyone, smart enough to look up the case knows spilling coffee on yourself shouldn't require skin grafts. The employees were at fault for heating the coffee way beyond drinkable levels. Had she taken a sip instead of dropping it in her lap she would have needed her reconstructive surgery on her face instead of where she did.
@roetheboat110 жыл бұрын

Yeah, when I first heard about it, I thought it was absurd. Of course our wonderful news media failed to give all the facts. I came across it some where online. There were photos of the poor womans legs, I was blown away at how bad her injuries were. And the online article also mentioned the fact that she was only asking for her medical bills to be compensated, like roetheboat pointed out. They refused, and got what they deserved. Her case does not deserve to be included here.

Here's the truth about the McDonald's lawsuit, because everyone has it ass backwards: Stella Liebeck ordered a coffee from McDonald's. The coffee was extremely overheated, and there was no "Caution Contents are hot" label on the cup. She accidentally spilled the coffee, and in went right in her groin, where she suffered major 3rd Degree Burns (Google Image it. It's NOT pretty). She didn't sue until after McDonald's essentially spit in her face when they offered her $800 to pay her Medical bills which were about $10,000 total. There's a lot more details than can be put in a KZbin comment, but that's the gist of it.
@MrAragon13111 жыл бұрын
True, and that particular McD had been cited four times by the local health department for serving coffee too hot to be safely consumed. They simply paid the fines and kept on serving overheated coffee.

1:55 - 2:12 #18 had been grossly misunderstood numerous times. It's not 'hot' coffee, it's scalding hot coffee, almost to the point of boiling. Not only McDonald's had numerous complaints about their coffee, they failed to remedy the situation. In fact, the grandmother really wanted to settle not once, but twice to cover her medical expenses. McDonald's eventually lost the case and finally settled instead of appealing the case. Sadly, due to misinformation, McDonald's got the advantage due to the PR media circus.

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!! People are always inclined to scoff at this case against McDonalds because the media doesn't lay out the facts of the case well. The media makes it sound frivolous, but if it were frivolous, a court would refuse to even hear the case and the attorney representing the litigants would be severely fined and reprimanded. After the courts reach a verdict in a personal injury case, it's important to remember...they aren't there to make you RICH...they're there to make you "WHOLE"!! That language simply means back to pre-injury condition!
