While not cooperative, Accipiters and red-shouldered hawks seem pretty clueless. Totally anthropomorhizing, but get a clue. Agreed, those squirrels are way chill. It's almost like the hawks are just 'half-heartedly' trying. 25, that accipiter is the most 'intent' (and agile) of the other 24...

@@HinduBoy agreed - the Coops at least are hatch-year birds based on the coloration of there ceres and legs/feet. I'm less certain re the red-shouldered, but a MD Raptor Conserv post further down corroborates that. Seeing them in RL is amazing.

Really appreciate the disclaimer about no animals being harmed. Otherwise I would love missed out on this incredible footage. My area is saturated with Peregrine Falcons and I wonder if the outcome may have been different. I've seen them sit in trees for hours but only recorded one dive.
@labalia30
@labalia30 2 жыл бұрын
Peregrine falcons (almost?) never attack birds on the floor, it would be too dangerous for them as their dive is so fast. Hawks like these Cooper's hawks are much more used/able to catch birds and mammals on the floor, in trees, and are able to maneuver the obstacles. Moreover, here we have mostly young hawks, it seems, which are less able when it comes to catch their preys. That's perhaps why they come to feeders where it seems to be "easier" to catch something than in a normal garden or forest.

They're teenagers guys. These are young hawks and they just haven't figured it out yet. As a falconer, I'm feeling sorry for the hawks. If they don't break the code, they're not going to make it. 70% of wild raptors die in their first winter. 90% will be dead by their 3rd. If these young ones can figure it out, though... The squirrels will need to watch their backsides. I raise pigeons. I allow the to free fly during the day. I watched one young Cooper's Hawk trying to make it's way in life and that summer my pigeon population went from over 40 to 14. That's the price you pay for letting pigeons be pigeons and appreciating that the hawk needs to eat too. That hawk survived it's first winter btw, because it became a successful hunter at the expense of my flock. I hold no grudges.

That's what I was thinking. I have a bonded pair of Red Tails that have been around here for years. The Female sits on my building behind the house that's just in the start of the field every day. She always gets what she goes after. I can watch them for hours. I can't see the male as clear as he sits up towards my trailer, out of seeing distance. It's a funny thing. One day I will see 2 or 3 rabbits playing in the back yard. The next day I will look out and there sits that big Female lol I don't see rabbits anymore after that. We see this a lot from our balcony. Hawks hunting pigeons in central Toronto. As beautiful as the hawks are, you do get a new appreciation for the limping, flea ridden city pigeon when you see them from the 20th floor. The aerial acrobatics they can perform when pursued by a hawk are nothing short of stunning. It is so dramatic sometimes that you are expecting a David Attenborough commentary to start up in the background. :)

@Ricky Robyn Yep. It's the stupider cats that think they can do anything about squirrels. Smarter cats know it's futile, and squirrels know this. They toy with gullible cats that think they can ever catch them. My smarter cats used to just ignore squirrels when outside, and they got the same response in return - they don't compete for food, after all.

Plenty get hit I'm sure. These were only the misses. This is the equivalent of shooting deer at a feeder.

👀 Even though you put a disclaimer, I was still on the edge of my seat. I have to deal with this daily at my bird feeders and it stresses me out. Thank you for sharing these amazing clips and not showing any death.

You're welcome! Luckily, we have never seen a hawk catch a squirrel on camera.

Me too, I know its nature but I feel like I am making my poor birds bait. I hate when the Hawk is here. I have about 20 crows that always let me know. They do their mobbing thing. I also have morning doves and the rock pigeons. They are easy targets. 😡😡

I had no idea birds had youtube channels! This will be great evidence for getting the united states government to make birds registered citizens!

I know what you mean when you say you feel like feeding the birds is making them bait. I feed the birds here in Southern California and there is a small hawk that takes out the small doves and it’s not much bigger than they are. Sometimes it happens right in front of me 🙁

In all the times I've watched Hawks I've never seen one go after a squirrel. Amazing I like #11 where he is staring at his reflection in the camera #13, Wow -A Northern Harrier and a Shark Skinned Hawk

That's a juvenile red shouldered and a juvenile coopers, I think. Sharpies tend to be much smaller and harriers have a owl like facial disc
