The thing I love about Keaton's Batman is that he doesn't talk much when he's Batman and I love his take on Bruce Wayne. No one would ever suspect him, he's quiet, awkward and doesn't even feel comfortable in his own house, he keeps all his pain inside, and it's a truly great, understated performance as both sides of the same person.

One thing I like about Keaton’s Batman is that if you watch the movies, he’s actually pretty bad at fighting, but he makes up for this by basically letting himself look like he got beat and then gets up and freaks everyone out, making him seem invincible to the various goons he goes up against. I find that a pretty interesting tale on the character, as usually Batman is portrayed as this master of martial arts who could take down a room of villains with no issue. It does a good job at showing his other strengths like how he both outsmarts his enemies and instills a sense of fear into them.

To me, Keaton did a far better job capturing the moodiness of the character. He portrayed Bruce Wayne as very distracted, consumed by his double life and yearning for a semblance of normalcy-but he just did not have the body for the part. Bale LOOKED more like Batman, athletic, muscular, and intimidating, but he did a far lesser job of capturing Batman's psychology and motivations. If only there were a way to combine the two.

Bale really dropped the ball. All he had to do was to use his Patrick Bateman character as the Public Bruce Wayne and his cool calm John Preston character as Private Bruce Wayne/Batman. Bullshit on Michael Keaton's hair style comments.... Is this what makes the soul of the character? FYI, hair styling is not the actor's concern/problem during the film making progress... There is a department for it. If those people didnt think that they should go with hair changes in the film, that is not Michael's fault to blame... The department didnot find it necessary to change the actor's hair style for the film so this is a miss for the production.... In Batman Returns however, Michael has more appropriate hair style for the character, he is more charming and handsome in a non conventional way!! So i guess the USA crew was far more skilled that the UK crew that had been involved in the original film... Nevertheless, Michael's performance roars of quality all along!!!!

I loved Batman and Batman Returns. Way better than Nolan's Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Returns. Of course, The Dark Knight, was the best, due to Heath Ledger's Joker along with Eckhart's Two-Face. Burton + Keaton = Batman Gold. Title is Batman after all. Burton Goth, Keaton Batman, and Jack Joker = Good all around. Liked Gotham, Liked Batman, Liked the Joker. The Dark Knight: Eckhart + Ledger = Batman Gold. Totally made the best by the villains.

Ch1Frequency To be fair, they both had some strengths for what they were attempting. Adam West was genuinely (and intentionally) funny as a satire of the '60s comics with silly Aunt Harriet, etc. and as a satire of the '40s movie serials. Bale started out pretty good as a Frank Miller Year One-esque version starting out in Batman Begins, but Nolan's version later went more and more out of character from Batman's core - to the point of happily abandoning, or never even having, any oath to his parents to avenge their deaths by warring on all criminals for the rest of his life in Dark Knight Rises, etc. And Michael Keaton was successful as the mysterious, weird, eerie, brutal vigilante, who's love-life suffers due to his absolute dedication to warring on crime for the rest of his life, like creators Bill Finger and Bob Kane intended Batman to be back in 1939, just updated for contemporary audiences, captured the Shadowy pulp style noir that Bill Finger had intended Batman to have in the first place, but Warners thought it went "too dark", so the franchise went back to light and campy with Kilmer and Clooney in Schumacher's Batman Forever/Batman & Robin.
