Brent Spiner as Data on Star Trek TNG and his many quotes

Data suddenly laughing hysterically (thanks, Q!) and then going right back to his old self and being somewhat perplexed by the experience is some of the best acting I've ever seen.

As much as they tried to ignore Troi being an empath with saying "I don't know" a lot, that little smile when Data is laughing is a brilliant nod to the fact she's an empath. She's smiling because she can sense the emotion from the laugh (most likely joy).

That last one really shows how excellent an actor Brent is. In his response to Geordi’s question, he tells the whole story with his eyes and facial expressions before giving any verbal reply.
@briane57066 жыл бұрын
The character of Data works because of the skill and acting talent of Brent Spiner. The opportunities Data gets on the holodeck allows Spiner to show his full range of acting ability. Sherlock Holmes, Cyrano du Bergerac and others show how brilliant he is. Sir Patrick Stewart praises his talent continuously. Also of course, he portrays Data’s brother Lore, and the members of the Soong family.

Brent's acting is actually amazing. He never breaks character or misses a beat. He's funny but also compelling. Some of my favorite TNG episodes are Data episodes. Even though it's corny, I love Data's attempts at historical recreation. Sherlock, cowboys, comedians. Every episode he's trying to be more human and learn something about how humans behave. In the process, we always learn a little bit more about ourselves. I can't wait to see him again in ST: Picard

In his time data should then have been able to make scientific knowledge leaps but was kept busy with sonnets and music replications? Like so much else in ST, it is great if you don't look at it too closely. (also acknowledging that they took more care in basing their Scifi in real physics than a hole lot of other shows)

Yeah actually any AI that can replicate these levels of cognition might have a clock speed that high but would never "experience" cognition at that speed, not with any technology I can conceive of. Modern computers could be technically be given parameter sets that replicate complex behaviors in a 3d environment, but without serious shortcuts you run out of computational power quick. GPT3 takes days to train a new task using a monster AWS grid. The black ops chatbots that Microsoft and Google have deployed take months to train. I assume Data has processing power and storage many quadrillions of times more powerful than anything we have today; he would still be fairly limited.

"I assume your palm will open this door whether or not you are conscious."'' How did Brent Spiner deliver some of those lines without either him or the crew cracking up? When I first started watching TNG back in 1986(?), I thought Data was just going to be a discount Spock. Brent Spiner took that character and ran straight off with Data, and made Star Trek a much better show than it ever could have been without him.

Marina Sirtis herself said that TNG was basically two-man show: Stewart and Spinner. And Data's dicussion with Spock was beyond amazing.

That's the point, Data. You don't need to know "the why" of laughter. It just feels right.

You should've included the bit from the episode that he encrypted the main computer with a ridiculously long password in Picard's voice...

Spock: "If I were human, I believe my response would be, 'Go to hell'. If I were human." (The Undiscovered Country, 1991, when told the Enterprise would be decommissioned.) Data: "To hell with our orders." (First Contact, 1996.) Brilliant.

Always love the way that Riker and Picard are bemused by data's reaction to Q's joke. Very basic of course, but for data understanding the word play as a joke for the first time, to him hilarious.

It feels like Lore could've been repurposed. Data had suggested earlier in the series that he could "start over." So why couldn't Lore be given that option?
@PrinceSilvermane8 жыл бұрын
I suppose it was too much of a risk for Lore to turn out the same exact way.
@koshi65057 жыл бұрын
Even so. This is a society that rejects capital punishment. They killed Lore for his crimes. Plenty of humans did just as much harm as he did and were detained. Hell, Data should have been unable to do the deed because of his ethical subroutines.

Perhaps he couldn't bear to have his only brother reset like that. Would you want to see your brother returned to an infant minded state?
@kjamison59514 жыл бұрын
Lore was switched off. He’s still Lore but deactivated. Resetting his ‘factory defaults’ would be akin to killing him because then Lore would no longer exist. It would be the same if they reset B-4 as well.

Did anyone else notice, at 4:50, that the person who got spot out of the tube was not DATA? He was wearing a grey and black shirt, and then it cut to data holding him while wearing his black and gold. I'm sure this was the cats owner, but you'd think they would have atleast put him in a star trek shirt for christ sake.

it is criminal that brent never won major acting awards for his portrayal as data.
