@duffman184 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I absolutely HATE metroidvanias. I've tried so many. And the only ones I like are Super Metroid, Axiom Verge, and Blasphemous. Cos there's always stuff going on. Every fight in blasphemous feels fun and satisfying, just every enemy that you come across. It reminds me of dark souls in that way, where every enemy you fight feels really satisfying to beat because it's all about learning the timing and patterns of each one until you can do it without even thinking, like a dance. It just feels "chunky". I don't know a better way to describe it. I guess it's the complete opposite of the Dynasty Warriors games for example, where every enemy feels like they're made of paper and you're just cutting them down with ease with no thought or tactics or skill required. The opposite of "chunky". That's what a lot of "souls-likes" get wrong when trying to copy dad souls, the fun doesn't come from the huge difficulty and slow attack animations, it comes from the "chunkyness" of each battle with each enemy, meaning the bog standard jump-on-goomba level enemy fights all feel more like little tiny boss battles that feel really satisfying and chunjy. And Blasphemous nails that feeling. I don't know if I'm making much sense but yeah. And it's not a game like Hollow Knight where there's about an hour of wandering around doing nothing per 5 minutes of gameplay. Blasphemous feels like all gameplay. And it's hard to get lost. It's got a very good map (not the map screen, I mean that the layout of the entire game is laid out very well and is intuitive and memorable, like the one in Super Metroid, so that you can always remember from appearance alone where you have to go next to get back to a certain area without needing to look up a map on the Internet and locations of things to know where to go)

I played most of these games, all are pretty solid but not seeing Blasphemous here, especially since it just got its biggest update yet (free), its absolutely Blasphemous! That game is one of the most intense Metroidvanias youll ever see. Also, add Salt and Sanctuary there as well.
@NinWRTV4 жыл бұрын
Blasphemous and Salt & Sanctuary are both good picks! I view them more as "2D Dark Souls" than Metroidvania but also there's probably an argument that Dark Souls is, by itself, vaguely Metroid-like. @@NinWRTV I personally wouldn't have minded a longer list, I recently bought my switch a few weeks ago. Been looking for a strider or Shadow Complex styled game for the switch and finally found one; Icey. Also was a bit surprised that the Castlevania collection wasn't listed either, I probably wouldn't have known that it existed on the switch if I hadn't seen it in the sale section of the eshop a few days ago. I did buy Hollow Knight this morning though after reading some reviews and seeing some vidoes, reminds me a lot of the game play in outland which was a hand drawn indie game published by ubisoft for the pc, ps3 and x360 definitely should check it out if these are the types of games you enjoy.

Gato Roboto was a ton of fun. Would have loved more of it. Maybe space it out some, give it some more room to breathe. It's pretty dense and frenetic. Axiom Verge captured that late 80s vibe for me *perfectly*. I had issues with some portions, mainly controls and obtusity. I enjoyed Shantae HGH, though it's not really 'vania (more like Mario 64 with the hub world and revisitable stages). Haven't played the others. Blaster Master Zero was a blast. More or less a "balanced" remake of the NES original. Need to play the second one, thanks for the reminder.
@Ghisteslohm1394 жыл бұрын
My thoughts: Always Awakening: is okay Axiom Verge: is good Blaster Master 1&2: are good Bloodstained: is very good (played the pc version) Chasm: I havent played, first receptions were mixed which is why I skipped it so far. Is on my watchlist Dandara: I didnt llike in the long run. The levels just arent that fun Dead Cells: Its good, widely liked, I personally dislike it, the runs feel so similar and it never clicked for me Eagle Island: This is sadly imo a bad game. Levels are boring and the mana and health restore system ruins the game. You can rarely get a combo going. Gato Roboto: Very short but very good. Pretty fun from start to finish, no real flaws Guacamelee 1&2: Both games are good. Depending how much you like the artstyle and humor they can be very good Hollow Knight: Fantastic game and currently the best game in the genre for multiple reasons. Combat, explloration, controls etc Has a slow start tho Iconoclasts: This is a good game but imo NOT a Metroidvania. Super linear story focused game. If you go in and expect a Metroidvania there is a good chance you will be disappointed. Kunai: Good-Okay A bit uninspired in the long run Monster Boy: Good game. Has some flaws but would recommend. Ori: Excellent switch port. Very good game. The bash mechanic is great. Part 1 is only a platformer, doesnt really have combat Owlboy: Looks great, is sadly super boring to play. Would not recommend. Shantae: They are all good games. (havent played the newest one) Steamworld Dig Series: Love both games. They are a bit too short and easy but they are so crazy addicting. Cant put them away for long. Big recommendation Sundered: have not played this. imo looks like a visual mess that turns me off, the artwork in itsel is great though Messenger: Banger of a game. Controls are so tight and the jumprefresh is an awesoem mechanic. Kickass soundtrack Timespinner: Played a bit on xbox gamepass, didnt enjoy it but I cant put my finger on why, maybe the colour palette. Controls were good Toki Tori: have not played them cecause the artstyle kinda turns me off Yokus Island Express; This is a really good game. Just feels fresh to play and doesnt overstay its welcome. Can recommend.
@Ghisteslohm1394 жыл бұрын
Games that are imo missing from this list: Elliot Quest (played on WiiU&PC). Super oldschool artstyle but if that doesnt turn you off you get an excellent Metroidvania with lots of secrets to explore. The initial learning curve I remember to be quite steep. Mummy Demastered: Surprised this isnt on the list. Its an excellent Metroidvania made by the Shantae devs. Pretty short and at release pretty difficult but just all around really good Also Blasphemous is worth a recommendation. It is a bit clunky and isnt super duper uber great but it is a good game with an amazing artstyle.

Fantastic video. I’ve played over half of these and you convinced me to put a few others I’d passed over onto my wishlist. One that I would add is Carrion that just came out. There is no real platforming to speak of, but plenty of upgrades, backtracking, and puzzle elements. I haven’t completed it, but so far I’m having a blast. The super-fast and fluid movement controls and “reverse horror” element make this game pretty unique. Another that might just barely make the cut (as a metroidvania) is Rogue Legacy. It’s more like Dead Cells where you unlock stuff that you can use with each new run after you die. It’s very basic, but pretty fun. Again, great vid. Keep it up!

I just finished one not too long ago by the name of Chasm. I got mine for like $2 more or less with some spare Eshop coins or whatever they're called. Overall that game was surprisingly really fun! My only complaint is that the difficulty flux is very odd here and there. First area was a cake walk(typical), second area was a challenge, third was easy to run through but the boss was tricky as hell, fourth was downright pathetic to be honest(boss went down easily and I was not a high level either), the fifth which is pretty great and overall not too bad in terms of the boss, and then the sixth and last boss I don't know why, but I died a bit getting to him, and then completely destroyed him once we were face to face. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not one to just run and gun(even though there are no guns), I tend to stick around and grind. I finished at 8 hours, and at level 32. Anyone else play this? Let me know what you think!

Hallow Knight was too difficult for me, and as much as I liked the idea of playing it, I gave up on it. I did beat the first boss or two as well, but the biggest part I like about these games is the exploration and the difficulty ruined it for me.

Exploring in Hollow Knight becomes easier if you play slowly and only use soul/mana to heal. Since you can almost always run away and heal you will rarely die. Just run back after every hit you tack until you naturally get better. The bosses stay difficult but most of the time their is a bench somewhat close
@rukh034 жыл бұрын
That is absolutely fair. The exploration is the prime reason I like Hollow Knight, and I was eventually able to beat the final boss. But the difficulty was right on the edge for me. I would argue that Dead Cells is not Metroidvania enough and doesnt qualify in this list. Ofc it has some Metroidvania elements.

Alwa's is really good. Enjoyed it. I hate the term Metroidvania. Metroid was first and thus all others are inspired by.

Dead Cells is a great roguelite game. It's not a Metroidvania, despite the marketing.

Using the term "Metroidvania" demonstrates a clear misunderstanding about both Metroid and Castlevania. Not only are the two games alike only in the most superficial of ways, but only a handful of Castlevania games even follow the "Igavania" style of design, and the rest are level-based action-platformers. Like Igavania, games like Ori, Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge, etc. miss very crucial aspects of Metroid's design and shouldn't be placed in the same category. "Metroidvania" simply isn't an accurate label and makes assumptions about the two games that aren't true. The best way to label these games is with a more general genre label: Platform Action-Adventure. It more accurately describes what they are; just because they bear some minor similarities does not mean that they're the same thing, or even close enough to being the same to label as such.

Most of this games were indie pc games first as they got popular and sold more then Sony Nintendo and so on wanted to port them. Only now castlevania games are going to pc. Because their starting to realize it’s created by pc but that because then not sharing titles more original and better works are being made by pc gamers.

I absolutely HATE when a reviewer takes points away from a game simply because they find it to be too hard. That is horse shit, cus gaming skill is obviously subjective. Perhaps you just suck at games. That's not the games fault, it's yours. I personally LOVE tough as nails games, and those of us with actual skill shouldn't have to suffer just cus you suck at the game, which is exactly what has happened with so many games these days that are coming out, as most of them are FAR too easy!

I juat can't get into the art style of bloodstained. And I can't stand the main characters design. I wish you could play as zangetsu from the start without having to beat it first. Also chasm looks cool, but I have yet to play a procedurally generated game that I liked for more than an hr or two. And I really didn't find hollow night to be that hard. Great game, good fair challenge. But not frustratingly hard by any means.

I’m glad Switch is releasing these types of games, but I’m sick of the retro 8 bit graphics. I refuse to play games with shit graphics from 40 years ago. They have graphic capabilities now on the Switch that look beautiful I wish they would start utilising them.

Re: Hollow Knight; "Mantis Lords send their regards". Cute. The Sisters of Battle, Pure Vessel, NGK, GPZ, and AbsRad want the Mantis Lords to get out of the way so the true beat down can commence. Like much of HK, Mantis Lords difficulty depends on when (or if) you fight them. That said, the hard bosses (and many whole areas) are all optional. Beating them are some of the greatest gaming challenges I've ever overcome. AbsRad may be the most difficult boss to beat in the history of this genre. Totally optional but, like 80% of the game, but still worth doing. There's over 100 hours of content in HK. For the $15 price point, you can't go wrong. The game at launch was easily worth $40 and the free DLC have made it AAA caliber. That said, I'll add a reminder to anyone having trouble that the game is non-linear. There is very little mandatory content and you can tackle that in almost any order you want. So if you are having trouble, go do something else. And pay attention to what the game is telling you. E.g. If you go to fight the mantis lords early in the game, an NPC will suggest you to go to the city to get your weapon upgraded first. Several other things will try to pull you in that direction too. You don't *have* to go that way, but on your first time through, it's probably easier. What I've found turns people off is the game's attempts to get you lost. It's heavily non-linear, so it genuinely doesn't matter where you go, but the people who really don't jive with Hollow Knight are the people who don't like the game actively trying to get them lost.

I don't think so (though I think someone here already said Iconoclasts maybe shouldn't count and I don't totally disagree). That being said, Celeste is AMAZING and if we wind up doing something on like "hard beautiful platformers," it'll be front and center.

Nintendo World Report TV yeah, I figured as it’s not really a MetroidVania at all, but it does fit nicely alongside many of these games. I’d love to see that list show up on the channel in the future though, awesome content!
