What you are seeing here is how deep their friendship has gone. I am from Austria and read the great book that Berger made. these two guys were just very good friends, and senna loved Gerhard. On days like this he was so much faster than anyone, but he let go of speed when he saw it was his buddy and teammate behind him. and then he gave him draft and also showed lines. once when he was allready world champion for that year he braked on the start finish line to give Berger his first win. Senna was a great man, and Gerhard Berger still is to that day!

Not sure if Senna would have been so generous with his friendship if Berger was good enough to actually challenge him. The way he handed that race to Berger actually appeared to many people as ungracious and humiliating, in that he made it clear who won the race by pulverizing Berger all race then obviously backing off at the last possible moment. Don't get me wrong, I think Senna was a good man at heart, but I think we can acknowledge he was at the same time totally ruthless in competitive psychology.

A guy with 10 gp wins in different teams and seasons isn't average. Not a multiple world champion but definitely champ material. The average gp driver has 0 wins and about 3 or 4 seasons in f1.

@@johnjack1355 i agree, average for sure he wasn't. to check his entire career he had great teammates, he was faster than Fabi and Alboreto, he made a 7-7 draw with Mansell (is Mansell an average driver?), a substential draw with Alesi over 5 seasons. Berger was clearly slower only to 1 driver: Senna (3 years). But Senna outqualified all his teammates (Prost included). Helmut Marko once said: Berger has a high basic speed, but with problems in coordination and concentration. his main problem was his environment, they were convinced he was better than Senna, so he tested like a demon during winter 90/91 while Senna was lazing at angra dos reis in Brazil. the result was: 1st qualifying in Phoenix (USA), down 2,3 seconds to Senna. the first half of 91 was weak, than he became the old Berger, once he quit emulating Senna he was efficient, very fast. his race in Suzuka 91 was excellent, a maiden win. the lesson: just be yourself!

Bruno Senna said that cars during that era cars had more understeer and one of the reasons Ayrton blipped the throttle was to unsettle the rear and use oversteer to help turn the car through the corner

@@R9naldo senna used blipping throttle tehnique to have a control the back of the car, f1 cars are rear powered and fishtailing of the car was a common thing, so much power could be controled by stabbing on the throttle constant in order to keep the car on the edge and keep the RPM high, in order to have a better corner exit speed. Combination of late braking for bigger corner entrance speed and stabbing the throttle during the corner, hitting the apex spotless and then flat out is more easier to say than do, that why senna was best and why he crushed stopwatch

Se vocês reparar que Berger utiliza sempre da freiada tardia, enquanto Senna sempre freia antes, contorna melhor e sai acelerando sempre priorizando saída de curva, Berger não tira o pé para não se acidentar, ele tira porque ele não vai conseguir tangenciar e Senna só fecha a porta, muito nítido e muito legal ver essa pilotagem de altíssimo nível.

O Senna tinha sempre essa coisa de tentar fazer a corrida toda sem trocar pneus, por isso é que no início das corridas não puxava tanto o ritmo.

when i watch this over and over i look at berger for 25 minutes, then senna for 25 minutes. its a nice change of pace to watch ayrton from another driver's car as opposed to his own in-car footage. and of course this is one of the nicest berger in-car videos i have ever seen.

Great stuff. Interesting to see their different cornering techniques. Senna goes a bit wider than Berger in most corners but except in a few cases Senna carries more speed out of them. Thanks, a real treasure.. Just listen to the engines.

BadTrip Really evident at Parabolica. Berger takes a wider line corner entry, hence a slightly later apex (trail braking?), but still pushes corner off, whereas Senna has a much tighter line corner entry and off, hence carrying more apex speed and speed down the start/finish straight. Same at the middle corner of Ascari; tight, Berger has to lift slightly to get the front to bite, whereas Senna looks harder on the gas. Berger slightly trimmed out to compensate for a lack of horsepower, perhaps?

azwris Almost positive that was 2 smallish birds of some kind. Watch it frame by frame, they "separate" and change direction towards the camera's right just before they vanish above Berger. Nice catch.

Perfect definition of F1 before 2000 years. Today F1 is driven like a bus, no oversteers, no understeer, no spins. its just a driver receiving a bunch of orders about how button he must push.

@@moneytron4143 I see your point and agree to some extent. But it's the natural evolution of technology and you can't get away from it. Back then we admired pilots for the sort of racing we see in this video. Nowadays we have to admire the incredible complexity of the technology used in F1 and the ability of today's drivers to cope with such different variables and configurations whilst driving considerably faster than back in the 90's. We may perceive today's driving as being smooth and laid back but I'm quite confident it is not ;)

@@vascotrigo Drivers dont need to cope with the complexity of the technology used in current F1 . they just follow orders of a big techinical team that tell to driver which button they have to push. Do you speak portuguese?

@@moneytron4143 of course they do follow indications for a lot of things. But they also need to press many other buttons to set the car properly for almost every corner and every straight. Differential, brake balance, fuel mixing, etc are constantly being changed by the pilot. As I said, today's racing is incredible and amazing for the technology that it involves and the skill of the pilot using that technology. I'm not as radical as you seem to be to consider the modern driver to be just a simple puppet following commands from the pit stop. They are amazingly talented in today's technological environment. But again, I totally agree with you about the rawness and pure driving skill that existed up until the early 90's. I grew up watching these guys in the 80's and 90's. I even got the chance to see a live GP in 92 Estoril. And yes I do speak Portuguese since I am Portuguese :)

I love this era of F1. And I sorely miss the V10 era of the late 90s to mid 00s. Even those cars with all their tech, had an edge/rawness that modern F1 lacks. But change is inevitable. And youll always have people yearning for the old. Please remember when the cars in this video were new, there were people pining for the golden era of F1, the 60s. When the cars were even more raw and dangerous. Running purely mechanical grip and regularly launching its drivers into the trees and barriers. There will come a day when people are like, "Remember when F1 cars had wheels?" or "Remember when they had gas engines?", "it was so much better then!" lol.

Sure McLaren come back one day. There are always some Red Bulls, Williams, Renaults or Mercedes, who dominate F1 for a short time. But Ferrari and McLaren was always on Top of F1. Every of them got sometime a weak Year or two. But one Day McLaren will be back again, like it always was.

i love the formula one of today even with all the technicalities because they still manage to put on a great show with real good racing! but looking at how they raced back then, that was pure racing, pure skill!

Quando la F1 era una cosa seria, le monoposto avevano un motore 12 cilindri che strillava, il cambio manuale, zero controlli elettronici e piloti che nel dubbio tenevano aperto, gente con i maroni! Quella era la F1 vera, oggi vedendo questi video si prova solo tanta nostalgia...Berger era un signor pilota peccato che il suo compagno di squadra fosse un fenomeno!

The downshifts after the straight in Monza sound so brutal and unbelievable quick (he had to shift by hand).

These downshifts seem very smooth compare to those made by Senna in 1988 at Suzuka. There is here on YT a video with a comparison between Senna and Prost at Suzuka, and you can hear distinctly how Senna was « brutal » in his style very opposed to the Prost’s one, smooth and calm.

You shoud see Zanardi at the Daytona 24 driving a GTLM BMW. Brakes and downshifts with his right hand off the wheel and on a special shifter. I have a hard time imagining taking Turn 1 or the Bus Stop two-handed....

At 9,24 he almost got him. But he couldnt keep up the full race. At the end Senna won by 7,4 seconds gap and Berger lost position to Prost too. But still, Berger was one of the best drivers ever. 1993 he should have joined Williams-Renault instead Ferrari again.

Prost was really good. Senna was the best at a one lap event. So he’d always be on pole. Both drivers were mad great. Different styles, loved them both. Senna had no patients though. Always felt like he had to win. That’s why he’d drive it in there despite the consequences. Prost”the professor” would just say, get’em next week…unless he makes a mistake. Luv this dudes

I would more say “the appearance of his driving is wild”. Like a master abstract artist. Watch him paint, his actions may seem random, wild and uncontrolled, but look at the finished piece. An incomparable work of art. Expressive, meaningful, profound, reflecting an organic precision and “rightness” comparable to the natural world.

This was at the time of Senna "blipping" the throttle on and off really quick mid corner to act a little as traction control. It was something he learned during the turbo days and as the years went on he got better and better at it. Or another way to put it. Good drivers can drive, great drivers know how to drive!

Ah, back then '90 the second Lesmo corner still was the original and fluend one and not such artificial than today. More challenging and risky (in case of understeer) at max. possible corner speed than today.

I was watching this video wondering why the car in front of Berger was so fast, then I saw "chasing senna" in the title and I stopped wondering. Berger was great, but not as good as Senna. Senna was a god. Still hurts to this day not knowing what he could have achieved not only in F1 but his entire life ahead of him. President of Brazil without a doubt. Such a great driver and human being whom I never knew personally, but has impacted my life so much and miss every day. Rip Senna.

I real scary part is how exposed they are. Their shoulders are outside the cockpit. It would lead to Senna's death when a piece of suspension hit his helmet and killed him.

Yes and the motors in this time about 1000 hp ~ 1200 hp ....today 750.....and the butterfly transmission much more easy

@@phrc06 Pretty sure power was around 700 ish, 1000hp was only for the turbo era in the 1980's. And modern f1 cars are around 1000 as well

@@phrc06 I think you got your numbers switched. The Lamborghini engine was considered the most powerful engine back then and that only made 750. These days cars are making 1000hp+ with the hybrid in quali.

Berger had the benefit of the draft, but couldn’t match Senna’s brilliant chicane speed. F1 was so awesome then. Real men. Today it sucks.

Honda V6 Turbo, V10, V12 won F1 from 1987 - 1991, In 1992, Renault V10 + Active Suspension defected Honda V12, Honda withdrew from F1 and joined US Indy Car later on and dominated Indy Car until now

I don't think half the kids in F1 today could handle the cars from the 80s and early 90s. They would flunk right out.

Treetop64 Most of the 'kids' in F1 today are in way better physical shape than their predecessors. Some of them, like Lewis Hamilton, have driven old F1 cars, Senna's 1988 turbo car in his case, and did just fine.

Tuppoo94 Well it's already been pointed out in the first reply. Electronic car assists, 3 pedals, H shifter, far more power, no in depth telemetry, giants that make up the grid (can you seriously stack Hamilton against Senna or Prost, HA. The list goes on

Interesting. Racing was very different back then, technology has changed so much. Compared to today the cars were much slower. Lack of downforce, lack of power (700hp in 1990), revs and torque, no power steering, round steering wheel, manual shifting, no paddles, no carbon brakes, crappy tire technology. Guys like Mansell needed Muscles to be quick. Sennas quali time Monaco 1990: 1:21. Vettels time in 2013: 1:13!

They were slower yes she to less downforce but the cars in 1986 were turbocharged up to 5.5 bar and put down well over 1000hp in qualifying trim. Way more powerful, harder to control. Slower times but 1000% better and more exciting to watch/drive I'm sure

There are a lot of these early to mid '90s in car videos on the net. Found them at an F-1 sight back in '09. Many of Shumacher up till '94 including, IMO, his greatest race. The '94 Spanish GP.

Yes, they do have electronic aid. They can adjust manny parameters using these several knobs on the steering wheel (with the pit crew help) and also they can know where they are going faster or slower on the track just reading the telemetry sheets. It's not active electronic, but help them a lot.

Sepang seems to me a video game track, with all that huge escapes areas, in the middle of nowhere. A good track has to have personallity, like Monza, Interlagos, Paul Ricard, Suzuka...
