[] 7-league boots: as Terry Pratchett pointed out, putting one foot 21 miles in front of the other places an immense strain on the wearer's groinal region. [] According to Brewer [of Phrase And Fable fame], Pandora was given the box as a wedding gift when she married Epimetheus; he was the one who was told never to open it. But of course he had to ... Naturally "the man did it" got edited out to put the blame on women. [] Drawing a sword from a stone may be a reference to stone moulds for casting sword blades. The cooled blade would be "drawn" from the stone mould.

Nah, man, Mother Kali is the coolest goddess of any pantheon. She is demonstrably more powerful than all the other deities, She once killed a demon by strangling him with Her bare hands, and the ONLY one who can subdue Her is Lord Shiva, who does so by lying down at Her feet and allowing Her to dance on His body to channel all of Her destructive force into Him rather than into destroying the world. Now THAT is a goddess! She doesn't even PRETEND to be nice, but She is good, very much so.

On Solomon's seal- Solomon may well be the most mythologized person in the bible, even more than Samson and Jesus put together. But he was indeed a real king, and a truly amazing one. He was the Steven Hawking of his day, only smarter, and he made Israel so wealthy that money was as common as rock. No doubt he did have a seal. It just didn't have all those magical properties. So I'd have to class that one as real, but heavily mythologized.

The origin of Excalibur is from The Mabinogion, (Mabinogi), a Welsh saga that is the closest you will get to Arthurian legends. In The Mabinogion, it is referred to as Caledfwlch and is a fiery sword wielded by Llwch Llenlleawg (who was a template for Lancelot in later French romances). Caledfwlch was Anglicised into Caliburn, which later became Excalibur. The sword in the stone was entirely different. The stone floated on a river, and is a whole different story...

Honestly, since ancient Egyptian hasn't been spoken in 5,000 years, we don't know how it was pronounced. Also ancient Egyptian contains no v-o-w-e-l-s. Written THTH, without a vowel can be pronounced any way you want and you'd, probably, still be wrong. You cannot take a modern Egyptian's word for it, no matter how learned they claim to be, because modern Egyptians are not Egyptians, they're Persians.

NO. However many items and creatures come from mythology. Flamel for example was a well-known French alchemist (who at least played a nice trick, which make many people believe the philosophers stone, is real [Not giving that away, do some research and you know what I mean.]) and Cappa for example is a Japanese water spirit. So though HP is completely fiction, many an element comes from either real people or mythology.

Mjolnir is not like in the Marvel films. It's not enchanted to be wielded only by those who are worthy. It's real powers include smashing mountains, summoning lightning when struck on an anvil, and never being thrown so far as to where Thor couldn't retrieve it. It was made with a flaw due to Loki trying to sabotage the dwarves from completing the challenge.

For those complaining about mixing fiction and mythology, they're the same thing. There is no official cut-off point at which one becomes the other. Classical mythology is just really old fiction.
@poeterritory6 жыл бұрын
No, not really. Mythology has its basis in truth. Fiction is a made up reality. It *may* be based on true things, but is not intended to be true. Your argument is that anything based on fiction can be considered a myth. That is clearly not the case.

14 - Excalibur (or Caliburn, as it is sometimes known), is a totally different weapon than The Sword In The Stone. When Arthur was still young, he was involved in a fight with a belligerent knight. Arthur's sword broke, and the other knight would have killed him, but Merlin appeared, and subdued the knight with magic. After Arthur's wounds had been dressed, Merlin led Arthur to a lake, and told Arthur to get into a small boat there, and row into the centre of the lake, and there await a great wonder. This Arthur did, and a female arm emerged from the water holding a sheathed sword, which Arthur took. The arm disappeared beneath the waters, and Arthur went back to Merlin on the shore. Merlin took the sword, and unsheathed it, telling Arthur that this was Excalibur, and a gift from the Lady Of The Lake, and that it was the best sword ever made. Before Merlin gave Arthur the sword, though, he asked him which he liked better: the sword or the scabbard. Arthur replied "The Sword". Merlin then told him that he was wrong, for the scabbard was enchanted, and whilst Arthur wore it, he would lose no blood from wounds in battle. I'm from the UK, and the stories of Arthur and Merlin, and Robin Hood are in our blood. I was told these stories when I was very young. And why did you include Harry Potter? They're not myths, but childrens' stories that have 'borrowed' most of their best ideas from dozens of far older, and better stories.
