Great List! Thanks! About the baby bird thing: My mom and I discussed that one time and she believed that myth was created to keep kids from messing with the nests. Made sense to me.
@nancyking Жыл бұрын
On an episode of Leave It to Beaver, Wally and Beav are told not to pick up baby rabbits so much because if the mother smelled a human on them, she would reject them, and she did. They got upset and went to talk to their fireman friend, played by Burt Mustin. He told them to put a little vanilla on the babies, so the mother couldn't tell the difference, and they did it.
@KathyPrendergast-cu5ci Жыл бұрын
It is true of some small mammals; anyone who breeds rodents like rats, mice, or hamsters which have a very acute sense of smell knows that handling a newborn is a huge no-no as the mother would be likely to kill it. I had hamsters as a kid (fortunately was never allowed by my parents to breed them) and I remember reading in a book on hamster care that if you absolutely must handle a newborn, you should handle all the babies in the litter so they all smell the same. It's not so much the "human scent", but just the fact that animals like this that give birth to multiples react more strongly to one of them smelling different from all the others. I guess it's just because they assume a different-smelling infant is from another animal's litter that somehow ended up in their nest, and they're not going to waste their own food resources feeding an infant that isn't their own offspring.
@SlightLeeBased Жыл бұрын
Movies and what not have misconstrued "silencers" which are actually called "suppressors" or in other cases "flash hiders" flash hiders depending on what it was designed for. The more practical uses of them are stuff like accuracy, better follow up shots, reduced recoil etc. In my opinion they're more useful for those things. But I will say that if you were inside an indoor range then I would much rather be next to the guy shooting with a suppressor than someone who is not. The sound is one thing but you also have the concussive blast that violently disturbs the air around it. Even with ear protection you still feel that. Some people will wait for the person next to them to fire intended shots then shoot their own target during their neighbor's reload kind of a courteous thing than others don't care and doesn't bother everybody the same. Think about it like throwing a bowling ball next to someone else at the same time
@gabrieldee345don510 ай бұрын
@@nancyking No. The smell of vanilla is to strong for rabbits anyway and it is a strange smell for them. Plus, they still can smell human smell as they are so gifted with the smell. But. I had a female rabbit that had babies and she killed them all and she hid them under the straws even nobody touched them. Because that happens some times, especially with young female rabbits.

A local cat once raided a bird nest, unfortunately two of the chicks had died, but for their own safety, because baby birds are fragile, I gently scooped up the surviving three chicks, with a plastic box. I then gently put them into a bird shelter, that was hanging in one of my garden's trees. As for the "silencer" myth, you are partly correct. The correct term is "suppressor", not "silencer". The ATF uses the term "silencer" because, they know as little about them as anything else they try to regulate, and it makes them sound scarier. Suppressors do not "silence" a gunshot as we see in the movies. However, they do suppress the report of the firearm. There are two factors that cause the loud report of a firearm. One is the explosion of the gunpowder (propellant), and the other is the crack of the bullet (projectile) breaking the sound barrier. Suppressors greatly reduce the explosive sound of the propellant igniting (that is why they are called suppressors), but they do nothing to reduce the sound of the bullet (projectile) breaking the sound barrier. It all depends on the type of bullet you are using. Some bullets are "super sonic" (faster than the speed of sound), and others are "sub sonic" (slower than the speed of sound).

Re: seizures, if you are able to time the seizure that would be helpful information for emergency persons. Longer than 5 minutes can cause brain damage. If you know that the person having a seizure is an insulin dependent diabetic, they have an insulin overdose, they are at risk of dying, they probably have some kind of emergency glucose shot or nose spray they need ASAP! If this person is epeleptic they don’t need emergency help unless it’s the first seizure, they get hurt during the seizure or it lasts too long. Of course they are scary to see so if you think you need to call 911 (or whatever) then do so. Better safe than sorry.

ALSO: If the patient is epileptic, and the seizures are sequential (one after the other with no recovery time) seek emergency help. You might get a finger bitten off, or obstruct the airways which can result in death.

While it's true parent birds will not reject their babies if you touch them, you SHOULD return fallen, uninjured nestling babies to the nest if you can. Nestlings cannot stand up on their own. They may have eyes still closed. But If a baby bird can stand and hop and has almost all of its feathers, that's a: fledgling learning to fly and should not be returned to the nest. Your local wildlife rehabilitator can help you if you are not sure what to do (I am one). Any bird, adult or baby who has an injury, has fly eggs on it or has been in a cat or dogs mouth needs medical help. Google your location and wildlife rehabilitator. And don't let cats free roam!

5:46 one caveat with the silencer myth is it can actually be done but it requires special sub-sonic ammo and is just generally not worth it. Also thats mainly on pistols as while you can silence larger guns like that its even more unpractical especially if your using low enough power rounds you might as well just be using a silenced automatic pistol. Not considering the fact silencer’s have a lifespan too.

What many people call “silencers” are actually called suppressors since they don’t 100% silence a firearm. To get the best results from a suppressed weapon, it’s best to use subsonic ammunition, meaning the bullet travels slower than the speed of sound. I myself prefer full flavor ammo, but the more you know.

Fish swim after eating and it doesn’t seem to do them any harm…. Seriously, the myth started after the Red Cross published a safety guide book in the 1930s which said doing any heavy labor, like lifting or swimming, should not be done right after eating because it could be more difficult if you’re full. That’s all. It never said it was dangerous to swim. The words got misinterpreted and passed on wrongly.

putting a spoon in the mouth of someone having a seizure-I've heard that one too, but my mother always told me not to do that because she used to have seizures, which was a while before I was born. I've witnessed people having seizures and people have done first aid by turning the victim on to their side or they'll choke on the foam coming out of their mouth. That's caused by the salivary glands going out of control and they can also lose control of their bladder. Other people are told to stand back because the victim could suffocate. From the time she was 12 to the time she was 28, my mother suffered from epilepsy. It wasn't known at the time just what caused it, but nowadays she would have been told that had to do with going through puberty.

I've also heard to put a wallet in the mouth, the theory being that it's in the way so they won't bite their tongue or break their teeth. I think these things could still happen, plus their airway is then obstructed. Seizures are pretty scary, for the person & anyone around. I'm glad if your mom no longer suffers from them :)

Weird superstitions. One of the ladies was Korean. She often cooked on a little hibachi and I wanted to invite myself to dinner. Everything smelled so good. Except for when she was making kimchi!

I had a student from Taiwan who told me she was scared of black cats. Only black cats, she said ones of other colours were fine, although she admitted she didn't like cats much in general. She couldn't explain why she had this particular fear of black cats. Maybe it was something cultural.

Truth serum: All of the items under the heading act to - for lack of a better term - inebriate the target. They tend to get sloppy in speech and thinking, making them more prone to giving away what would best be hidden. The use of gin might be a better alternative to some expensive serum. Just sayin'.

I have 3 black cats and they are wonderful.

Adults know best: Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery? Carrots: I've heard that the myth was designed to mask the invention of the artillery proximity fuse for anti-aircraft fire. Black cats: The Church's position on black cats actually HELPED the plague spread: The decreased number of cats allowed more of the disease-carrying rodents to spread! Significant birthdays: I always viewed this more as a time when one stops lying and saying they're older and starts lying and saying they're younger. Chocolate/acne: I believe this was an adult invention to keep kids out of their stash...

Maybe the five second rule does not apply in a public toilet cubicle.

I....don't know anyone who ever actually believed the "5 second rule". It's usually said more as a joke than something people seriously believe.

#24 years ago when I was in high school back in the ‘80’s, I remember the popular radio station discussing this particular topic. 😹

That was also in the end of an ep of The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius, where one of his pals mistook the pink jelly-like substance for plum pudding and ate it... Now that was hilarious! 🤣

Obviously the wishbone thing is a myth, because magic isn't real. My partner and I split wishbones by each picking a favor the other can do for them, and the winner gets it. Favors can be replaced by preferences (what we do for our next "date"/activity, lineup for movie night, dinner out, etc). Stuff like that. And then you actually get your wish! 😂

Thought it was chocolate processed with alkali, not the cocoa itself. Some of these are still hilarious. As mentioned, at age 30, it's another wake up call. 😂

So, in TX, flashing your lights means there's a cop up ahead for oncoming traffic. In Oregon, it seems to signal that someone is unhappy with the amount of light coming from your headlights. In other parts of the country, using your flashers signals traffic ahead and to slow down. I wish all of the signals were the same everywhere.

1:55 Maybe THEY don’t, but I saw an episode of I Survived where a guy was walking home in NYC and three strangers came up to him and attacked him with knives. Apparently it was their gang initiation to go kill someone.

I think the chocolate causes pimples myth started because people noticed that when they craved chocolate was also when they were having acne breakouts. Hormones can cause breakouts and chocolate cravings.
