I was homeschooled as well, you reminiscing your days with your mom reading aloud brought back many memories of my mom doing the same. There were six of us kids, and she would make sure there were piles of laundry to fold. While we folded laundry, she would read. I kicked started my love of reading and being emersed in other worlds.

I’ve only read one mystery book, but I really enjoyed it. It was The Cracked Spine by Paige Shelton. It takes place in Scotland and it’s the first book in a series.

Whoooa, maybe I shouldn't be so surprised, but your reading journey is so similar to mine. Read those series in the same order, and those four really got me into reading! (But I agree, Divergent fell flat). I also agree with almost all of your picks! If you're looking for good sci fi, RED RISING is such a good series. Maybe you've already read it, but it's now one of my favorites.

Ok, for mystery I highly HIGHLY recommend Tana French The Searcher. I have never been a fan of mystery, but someone recommended it and I was sucked in immediately. A retired Chicago cop moves to Ireland and begins fixing up his cottage and of course he just can't escape his detective instincts. Tana's writing is just exquisite.

Just seeing you for the first time and am so excited to add some more books to my already long list of TBR! Went through several years of a reading slump after having kids and am so glad I have gotten back into reading:) My favorite read from 2023 was The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young. If you haven’t read that one before, I’d recommend adding it to your list 😉 Also was good to hear of such great memories you have of being homeschooled!! I went to public but am homeschooling my two kids and can only hope they have similar memories 😊 We mostly do read alouds on audible and your video might have inspired me to be sure I do some reading too…

Emily Henry is fantastic 😁 Happy Place - the Ferris wheel scene is one of my most favorite memorable. I laughed reading that part. Really enjoyed that book! Fourth Wing was beautiful!! I heard so much negativity when it came out and I hesitated picking it up, but I'm glad I did. Very fun, very cool!! I love the characters, I love the world building.. so imaginative, so well played!! 😁

My favorite mystery thriller authors are Riley Sager and Ruth Ware. Both write very atmospheric and fascinating mysteries and have been putting out a new one every summer for a few years now so there’s always one to look forward to each year. Grady Hendrix is one I’ve enjoyed too that’s more in the horror vein, if you want to try that. My Best Friend’s Exorcism and Horrorstor are probably my favorite. For more of a sci fi leaning thriller, I’d go with Blake Crouch. He writes more like a Black Mirror episode. Very fast paced technological thrillers usually. Very page turnery.

I am so glad I came across your channel and LOVED watching this video! I kind of like these questions, because they concentrate on the books rather than the redundance of what the general newbie tag can sometimes offer, though the questions being a bit similar in the positive attributes means you have to think a little bit and plug in different books for different prompts. While your favorite genres are not necessarily my favorites, we both have the commonality of being eclectic readers that are willing to give anything a chance. You should read what you enjoy, though. If modern mysteries do not work for you, you should not read them. I can see where a lot of mainstream fiction does not do anything to stand out. Agatha Christie is relatively reliable, though it can be argued that later on, her works were not as strong. I feel that Harry Potter established "the chosen one" trope and that The Hunger Games series' take on this was a rushed knockoff that was looking to be dynamic. While I loved the first book in the series, it seemed to boil the pot in needing to do everything with the primary focus being effect and satisfying the checklist often applied to box office films. In turn, The Hunger Games seemed to inspire many dystopians that followed. I own Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and I, too, remember when the film came out. I did not get around to reading the book, but am especially now inclined to doing so. I am generally not someone that rereads, though I will do so if I need to refresh myself on a work and I have found it helpful. I am familiar with The Night Circus, though. Hah! BookTok especially had a great influence. The Song of Achilles is a prime example. I found it to be like The Real Housewives of Athens, it was so over the top with melodrama! There is no need for you to worry about unpopular opinions. You like what you like and should read what you want. The Song of Achilles is a book I did not like and I have to say the same about The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. I did not like the book and the direction it chose to take. Addie could have taken such an enthralling direction with her immorality and the state in which she was in, because instead we mainly get her interactions with Henry during the present day and her encounters with Luc during the past and just about NOTHING ELSE from the past. I do, however, want to look into Everyone Brave is Forgiven and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I only have a vague idea about the former, but have heard plenty about the latter and am inclined to check them out. I also want to look into The Light Between Oceans. I am impressed with how quickly you reached 2K subscribers, but you have such a good presence and do such a fine job making your videos engaging. I love how casual they feel! I thought The Martian was a great book! I felt Andy Weir was the perfect person to write this book, because he knew his subject matter and was able to translate it into a book that was accurate, dramatic at times, and always entertaining. I heard a lot about All the Light We Cannot See when I first started Booktubing and I own the book, but need to read it. There are quite a few books I would be happy to see adapted into film, but I would want these films to be done justice. I also hate love triangles! I honestly never heard of Mara: Daughter of the Nile and it is fascinating that your mom was able to find a hidden gem like that. It is great that it was on your curriculum, though! Was the woman that made a cameo through the window your mother? That was quite a riot and I believe your husband, too? Anyway, I will look into Mara: Daughter of the Nile as well. Hi nice to meet you! It's refreshing to hear someone to not be that into From Blood and Ash. I would recommend Tom Mead's books for the mystery genre. They are locked room, golden age inspired mysteries. They have some magical/theatrical themes but ultimately the answers are all rooted in fact... but working out the answers is not easy so hopefully you won't be disappointed by the ending.

I have 40+ years of reading experience on you so my recommendations may be a little vintage but they are books I think you might enjoy: For mystery thrillers - The Jackson Brodie series from Kate Atkinson, The Collector by John Fowles(my very first thriller read in my teens), Alive by Piers Paul Read; Fantasy - anything by Patricia McKillip, The Dragonsong trilogy by Anne McCaffrey, The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge; Magical Realism - Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen (actually all of her books are magical) Enjoy!

I wouldn’t really call them “new” but I am having the exact same issue with modern mystery novels but I would highly recommend checking out The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. To me, what makes the best Agatha Christie novels great is her ability to infuse what were modern issues and concerns into her mysteries (rise of Fascism, death of the British empire, etc.) and I think Stieg Larsson absolutely captured that tension with The Girl of the Dragon Tattoo series. His background as an investigative journalist looking into alt-right Swedish groups honestly makes the first book feel prophetic- showing the simmering fascistic sentiments still lingering in Scandinavia. These tensions would come to the surface in the 2010s after Larssen’s death and it’s fascinating to see how he predicted these elements resurfacing as early as 2004.

Great video, The Will of the Many, The Night Circus, and The Martian are fantastic! It's always fun to see new recommendations. I don't read a lot of mystery/thriller but here's a few general recommendations of mine: The Tapestry by Henry H. Neff - If you ever get nostalgic for Percy Jackson or Harry Potter but want something new, give Max McDaniels a try! The Aurelian Cycle by Rosaria Munda - A political YA trilogy with dragons and a slow burn romance with an interesting cast of characters Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn - Historical fiction mysteries set in the Victorian era featuring another slow burn romance with fun banter interwoven throughout Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky - A standalone military focused story with a tiny splash of fantasy and a prose reminiscent of Jane Austen I hope one of these different stories can help somebody else browsing through!

One of my favorite thrillers of all time is The Borrowed by Chan Ho Kei which takes place in Hong Kong. It is the book that I had to come back to the first part of the story right after finishing the last line of it. Dropped my jaw on the floor and have not picked it up since then

I love VE Schwab! I still think about the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue often. It’s like nothing I’ve ever read before and I would have fought a bear for Addie. That ending was 🤯 i kind of wish there was a sequel, but also the last few pages were absolute perfection. So empowering. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend her Cassidy Blake series. First book is City of Ghosts, and perfect for autumn/spooky season. They are more fascinating and charming than scary, but the spooky vibes are vibing, and you get to visit a different city in each book: Edinburgh, Paris, then New Orleans.

Really enjoying your videos and always come away with new books to add to my TBR 😊 Some thriller/mystery recommendations: The collector by John Fowles is a good psychological thriller. Probably my favourite book I had to read for school. Lisa Jewell has good easy read thrillers, None of This is True got me out of a reading slump! Gone girl and Fight Club also great but I think the movie adaptations have spoiled the plot for most people by now!

Hello Olive. Best wishes with what you choose to read. For thrillers my favourites are the oldies of Raymond Chandler such as The Big Sleep and Lady in the Lake. Dashiell Hammett is fantastic. The Maltese Falcon is pretty perfectly written. And then of course there are the Sherlock Holmes short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I don't see the "love triangle" in Shadow & Bone. All of the "love interests" serve as an analogy for her own inner turmoil at some point. There is a crush in the beginning that sets up the MC's naivete at the start of her journey. It's very short-lived and illustrates her struggle with power and its dynamics. There is a second interest later in the series, but this one has the MC parse out the balance between her desires and duty. With the enduring love interest, they are so young they both unintentionally and intentionally hurt each other, there is exaggerated jealousy, but I respect their relationship a little more for its realism. And that relationship is symbolic of her innocence and its ability to survive the harsh realities of war and trauma. Maybe this reframing will help you get through it if you ever decide to give it another chance.

@11:40 I completely understand this... I get turned off when writing seems lazy and sloppy ... I'm a stickler for breaking up POVs and I don't like it when an author switches between POV within a scene, just an example .... And spice can really turn me off, ironically I guess 🤣🤣 I loved Fear the Flames but the spicy scenes I thought over the top and ridiculous. 👍

Percy Jackson really is core for me, haha. You should give it shot if you're in the mood for a fast-paced middle grade reader. I'm really trying to decide if I'm gonna push through Reckless. I know I won't be able to right now...but maybe eventually.

Olive, I think we must have used the same curriculum because Mara: Daughter of the Nile was one my mom read aloud to me as well! It was one of my favorites from childhood that I read over and over all through high school! Love to see another Mara fan!!

I highly recommend the Inspector Gamache series by Lousie Penny. I have raved about this series in my channel for years now. It is a traditional crime investigation series but with great characters and overarching narratives that take several books to play out. I recommend giving the first few books a try!

Vaguely new to your channel and I read a lot of mysteries and thrillers. I really enjoyed the book House Of Glass. I don't remember the author's but it shouldn't be hard to find. It was a BOTM pick in July this year. I borrowed it from someone.

I was honestly so surprised when I read Fourth Wing. I thought I would hate it but I actually enjoyed it so much more than I was expecting, though I am apprehensive to read the sequel since that seems to have the unanimous review that it isn't as good as the first which is a shame.

The sequel is definitely not as good as the first one. My personal opinion is because it was rushed so much by the publishing company - Fourth Wing was SO successful that I think they just wanted R.Y. to pump out the next book as quickly as possible to capitalize on the success. I'm hoping that book 3 will be better since it seems like she's taken a lot more time writing it!

Just discovered your channel through this video and you have a new subscriber!! 🤍I looooove fantasy too and I love a good mystery, especially both in one book. Some of the books you mention are very high on my favorites list (like the seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and of course Harry Potter). So, I've got a mystery recommendation for you that I think you might like (based on the books you mention in this video): The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi. Also one my favorites. It made me feel sooo many different emotions. I thought the mystery was pretty good too. I predicted the ending, but quite late in the book and I feel like the author gave me just a enough right before the end to have me scream at the book: "I KNEW IT!!!" 🤭 It has fantastical elements that make you question whether you're reading fantasy or maybe magical realism or maybe just a realism book. It's super unique. If you read it and know anything like it, I'd love to know! Also a shout out to my all time favorite book: Babel by R.F. Kuang (historical fantasy set in Oxford). If you want a good ugly sobbing cry, go for it! I wish I could read it again for the first time.🥺

I also get regularly disappointed with thrillers/mysteries :( the ones I can think of right now that I had more fun with are Riley Sager’s Home Before Dark and The Only One Left… maybe The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins? Also enjoyed American Gothic by Silva Moreno-Garcia. I think having an element of horror gives it more of a kick

Have you read any of the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher? it is a fantasy series about Private Investigator Wizard. James Marsters, Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer reads the series on Audible. As for mysteries, I mostly read Detective Fiction, meaning Detective Inspectors in England, though I do like Louise Penny novels. For historical detective fiction, I would suggest Charles Todd, Inspector Rutledge, or their Bess Crawford mysteries. They are set in WWI, the first series is a shell-shocked, old name for PTSD detective, the second is a nurse during the war that gets too curious about deaths/murders. Elizabeth George, Inspector Langley series, Deborah Crombie Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. Cozy mysteries with my favorite British detective character is Martha Grimes series. My favorite all time book are Fools Crow’ by James Welch, Native American literature, and The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub, fantasy/minor horror, Tom Sawyer retelling.
