the message is simple enough.. if you're serious about photography.. be unique and be yourself and do something creative and individual. if you're intent on capturing a cliché, make it unique to you. Also, it's a case of doing what works.. if you're selling images.. do what sells. even if is a cliché. Because people buy clichés, every day.

I have been guilty of one………Pictures of homeless people doing a selfie while light painting in front of a sunset that is in color but the Hobo is B&W with a slow shutter speed so the urine stream of the hobo is blurry while zooming in to create a blur and shooting six selfless to stitch together for a pano.. I shoot those shots all the time and then I HDR the shit outta them! Yippee! BTW, I agree with you.

But the whole point is to get you to break away from all the cliches a bit and to think differently. Think outside the box, be creative, if you are doing photography as just a hobby then ignore this list, but if you are serious about improving try going out and shooting avoiding these cliches, and then you will improve your photography eye and not rely on these cliches to make a shot worth looking at.

How about not patronising people talking down at them. A professional photographer will and do use some of the taboo subjects you feel are out of bounds. I agree with some. But as they say it's not what you do it's the way that you do it. Or is that too much of a cliche?

The selfie thing is a disease, a mental one. I would advice someone with the obsession to look into other faces, or some therapy. This video has a sarcastic vibe. It isn't meant to destroy anyone's feelings. I have a curated gallery with a lot of particular tones, and since they go well with sunsets, there are the guilty sunsets in it too. I shoot Bokeh, and love to make star-flares when my camera allows it (I don't have the filters). I also love a good flare when again, it naturally hits the camera. Do I feel worthless because this video called those out? Nah, I know what I am doing, and I found this to be very funny, and good reminder of what is outside the overly done. I get it, social media whores do it for the likes. This video is more so directed at those who want to become serious photographers, and want to see just where the trends break. Instagram/Facebook/Flickr aren't platforms to truly judge your talent as an artist as these are things that ultimately anyone wishing to twitch mathematically to their advantage, can, not necessarily by been a good artist. I have seen amazing shots get no likes, and things that anyone can shoot/frame get thousands. I have seen the same shot edited in poor manner get more votes, versus the edit that make the photograph better get ignored simply because most "likers" judge by others liking, not necessarily by taste.

+EmptyMind True but... if the video must be explained in depth then the video did not do its job, did it? No, have to agree with +Kayitci Ata here - it is incredibly condescending to newbies and as a by-product, it can be discouraging when such disdain is shown for efforts made by them and others. (It wasn't until almost the last sentence of the video that he clarified his 'message' but by then it's too late for some.) Still don't know how the time of day is a cliche? Why exclude sunrises? What is the most common photograph? Portraits. Better chalk that up as a cliche. While you're at it, food photos. Night tripod city shots. Transport photos. Blended night/day shots. Long exposures. Startrails. Moon shots. Flower photos. High/Low Key shots. It's all been done before. I don't think I've seen an original idea on this channel, this channel itself is a cliche, create videos to sell products. Seen that how many times? My point? Its like music, you're limited by an amount of instruments, notes, chords, progressions and timing. It's the nuances that make the difference.

Yeah but the whole point of the video is to encourage those young photographers to break away from the cliches and learn how to make a worthwhile photo without them, they are mainly addressing the people that literally almost never stray from these cliches. I like taking pictures of sunsets and the sky in general. Whenever I see some interesting cloud formations I want to take a picture even if it's cliche, I don't care, I enjoy it.

I love sunsets. Each one is different. And selfies have been around forever; I think it's just the self-expression of the subject in the photo people have a new-found problem with...That said, I think the most important thing in photography is to be passionate about the subject. If you aren't, your photo is going to be crap anyway.
@brinckau9 жыл бұрын
+chapachuu People who take selfies are very passionate about the subject, I guess.

+chapachuu I love sunsets too, but that doesn't mean I can just shoot some sand, water and a cool sky and call it a day. A sunset shot in a good location is awesome, But 90% of the pictures I see of sunsets are just boring sand/water/sky shots.

Amazing they did not mention cats. Here's a #25 for you...start a KZbin channel where you can rant about your photography pet peeves. 70% of what is in this are part of the natural process of experimentation when learning photography, and I would disagree as to being cliche. Way to make newcomers feel self-conscious about what they are doing, great job. And seriously, you don't like stock photography? Might not be interesting for you, but a lot of photographers pay the bills with that stuff...maybe they should stop doing stock and start up a KZbin channel?

In short, this video, in the guise of trying to be funny, reeks of photo-elitism.
@W4TSKY10 жыл бұрын
i remember when i first started taking photos about 5 years ago. the only things i've been guilty of doing in the video was putting watermarks on my older photos so no one would steal them and sell it for MILLIONS (lol) and taking "touristy" photos when going out of town. i didn't experiment with HDR and a lot of other things because, well, i thought they looked like shit, even to my beginner self.
@paulgomes556710 жыл бұрын
Oh, really? You never took a picture of a sunset, huh? I call bullshit.
@paulgomes556710 жыл бұрын
Again, I think this is a list of his pet-peeves, rather than a list of clichés. But, for the record, my own infractions from this list: copyright/watermark, sunsets, B&W (not with selective color - but I have nothing against it in principle), slow exposure water, clouds, angled shots, touristy - seriously this applies to any landmarks anywhere, homeless people - and experimented with that zooming thing but never really used it. I have also played with HDR, but my use would not fall under his criticism, since I go for subtlety as opposed to the garish ones he shows. I think people should explore their creativity through the art in any way they can. I don't think people should worry about if it is cliché or not, but should experiment freely and learn. In doing so they will develop and grow and become better photographers - and I think that this video is sending exactly the wrong message.
@leonardspivey10 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree with you more. In fact, I was scrolling through the comments hoping someone had already said what I was thinking and thank god you did. This is nothing more than snob elitism. Take pictures of sunsets, and cats, and waterfalls, or whatever makes you happy, whilst always having a mind toward thinking constructively and learning from your mistakes, and tell the rest of the world to shove off when they call you cliche. This guy did not write the bible of photography, and "because it looks shit" is not a criticism. Its bratty nonsense.

One of the reasons why I am so in to photography as of now is because, I have the urge to create images that no one has ever seen before. This video is 100% accurate. So many typers of pictures have been done over and over again that they just become kind of a bore. The things he's saying are clichés, I took as things that people new to photography do. It's true though, when I first started I did the majority of these things. Now I don't, but that's how you grow as a photographer. There's plenty of things to photograph, this video is kind of a reminded to be more original, and to not keep doing what everyone else is doing because then you won't grow as a photographer.

What an elitist way of thinking... Not every photograph you ever take is going to be very original or a masterpiece, and if you follow this kind of logic (where you won't photograph a situation, setting etc. just because others have done it before you), you'll ultimately miss the opportunities where you could've shot a highly original photograph. Photograph whatever you want and however much you want, because it's not like you're going to run out film anymore.

I hate watermarks, I feel they only ruin photos as they distract and take away from the image. When you take a picture, you take it because everything in the photo is important and part of the whole, why cover some of it up with meaningless text. If it is small and in a corner, it can often be photoshopped out out in a few seconds. If it is huge and covers a more important part of the image, then it just becomes obnoxious and makes the entire image look bad. think of it like putting cat poop on top of a filet mignon made by the someone who is the most skilled on and off earth at cooking a filet mignon. The presence of the cat poop covering it will make the whole thing bad, regardless of how great the food part is. No matter how hard you try to think, it is not part of the image, since art is largely emotional, you will subconsciously think less of it because there are unwanted elements
@mattyfizzle10 жыл бұрын
I can't tell if your question is rhetorical or not but I'm gonna answer it anyways because it almost seems like you aren't exactly understand what watermarking is used for. People watermark their work to prevent it from being used without their permission. However they do realize that it will make their photo less attractive but it will prevent people from using it and if they do use it anyways the watermark will credit the photographer. Basically it's just the free and quick alternative to actually getting your work copyrighted. With all that being said I also hate watermarks but people need to protect their work.
@Razor204810 жыл бұрын
mattyfizzle The thing is that it is nearly impossible to use it in a way that will protect the image, it is not hard to edit the watermark out, unless they make it giant and over unique details (though at that point, the image is 100% useless) The watermark is the equivalent of slapping yourself across the face 1000 times a day in order to prevent people copying your work. It clearly will not work, but they will justify it by saying "well I cant just do nothing". (not only are they not accombplishing their goal of preventing people from copying their work, but they are also hurting them self). It is the equivalent of saying "I just took this awesome world changing photo that will put every other artist to shame, so I am sure that people will try to steal it, but I still want to show the world how awesome I am, so I will show the world the image, but I will smear horse feces all over it so that no one would want to steal it" If someone is going to purposely degrade their image, then it is less work, time, and effort to just leave the lens cap on and take photos without ever leaving your seat, you will still end up with a bad image right out of the camera, but you did not have to travel and put lots of money into taking a good photo and making it bad. If if they rely on their images in order to make a living, then degrading them will simply make people skip them where they might have otherwise gave them money. Imagine if in order to prevent people from stealing display models, the store spray painted graffiti all over the screens, how will that impact their sales. (some people do steal display models) (but I think the impact on the sales of non degraded versions of the product will suffer)
@mattyfizzle10 жыл бұрын
Well if no one wants a piece of work smeared with horse shit then I guess you could say it worked according to plan lol.
@johnmichaelleslie483510 жыл бұрын
I think the point of a watermark is while it's easy to edit out it's hard to argue later you didn't realise the photo was copyrighted. It's like having a ten foot high chain-link fence around a military base, it doesn't keep people out that well, but it's hard to say you just accidentally wandered in. (I don't watermark BTW. Might do though, jury is out.)

Well, when I give my friends photos to share on their pages, I always put a little watermark, so if some people are interested (they can see my watermark in photos on various pages and kinda get familliar to them), they can find me and my group with some other photos. So, it's not spoiling photos, but it can have some other options besides "you can't use my photo!" (Sorry if my english isn't good enough, and yes, I know that no one will read this)

I have watched his videos so who knows , maybe I was inspired by his pics - or maybe we just have similar inspirations :-) who knows?
