It's amazing how limited so many shooters were on the Amiga, due to the one button limitation, yet I rarely complained or thought much about it. I was just so engaged and impressed at the time. Also, being an arcade gamer, the difficulty of most Amiga games were never questioned.

I remember loving Hawkeye on my C64 and being despondent when I got it on the Amiga. Also, Ruff'n'Tumble is a great Run and Gun Shooter on the Amiga.

Ruff N Tumble is a great game and it was borderline whether I should include it. Probably would have been the only Essential game. I ended up putting it in the Action Platformer league instead.

Interesting list. I can't really argue with any on the list although if I had to quibble about any of them I think both Jim Power and Commando I would place higher tiered but I couldn't agree with you more about Super C as it is awful. makes me wonder why they never bothered putting Contra/Gryzor on the Mig.

Quite a few I haven’t heard of. Given the lack of much quality, the Turrican games and Ruff n Rumble might have lifted the mood a bit 😁. Dogs of War is definitely worth a go as far as Amiga Commando clones are concerned.

Fun fact : The Amstrad CPC version of Astro Marine Corps completly crushes the Amiga version : FX & Music at the same time, faster scrolling (!) and gameplay, faster soundtrack too, more precise hitboxes, no loadings between sections AND checkpoints ! I don't know what happened with the Amiga version but it is pretty bad. PS : If you had the Turrican games in this list, you would've had at least 3 Essentials ^^

Doesn't surprise me one bit. A lot of games from that era were better on 8-bit systems. Ikari Warriors on the Amstrad was great too. You can see my opinions of the Turrican games in the Action Platform Superleague.

That was number 1 in the Essential category when I did the Overhead Shooter Superleague 😁 great game!

No essential games-that is about right! Shooters were crap on Amiga and clear example of difference between "bedroom coding" for Amiga and developing with proper producer/designer/playtest like for japanese arcade and consoles (I dont mean literal bedroom coding)! They get graphics decently close to arcade but botch gameplay/controls! Anyway, Jim Power quickly becomes boring, enemies are to stoopid but set ups are hard and together with strange design, game is not realatable and therefore not immersive! If not all Turricans, Turrican 3 must be considered a shooter and it tops this list! Ruf'n'tumble also. Great graphics and great gameplay although I could never get into it's mechanics for some reason. I was blown away by graphics of Entity but as soon as I played it, all shortcomings of europeam game design strikes hard!
