We are working with him right now to choose either a second major or a minor that he can use to make money/get a job while he builds up his music career. We are dead serious with him about how difficult the gig life will be until he makes a name for himself. He knows he’s going to have to work hard to support himself. Some artists are so into it they scrape together some money to buy a shack and live away from others. Growing up a lady lived off grid painting in her little barn she built. She was quite the barefoot hippie. She didn’t want any part of society, she just wanted to paint. Gotta give her credit it was a very well built barn and she was a very good artist

People don't understand about psychiatric disabilities. It can happen to anyone. This also is a civil matter and this horse doctor does not know that the police will not get involved. It has to go to court. The son can sue the parents. He needs help. You can not just put people on the street. It has to go through the courts. If the judge is not as stupid as the parents and the advice given to them, he will probably find that the son needs Social Security Disability! How in the hell could he afford the rents today? He sounds disabled and is at risk of dying on the streets.

I know a woman who had a son in his late 20s. No job and just stayed at home. He would wait until she went to work to pawn her stuff at the pawn shop, so he had money for beer and drugs. She would even lock her bedroom door hiding her valuables he hadn't sold yet, and he would break into the bedroom from the outside window to steal what she was hiding. How she solved it was she moved to another town and left him there. She had been renting so I don't know what happened after that.

I bounced back and forth with my folks a couple of times before 26 or so. It wasn't my first choice but I was trying to get on my feet. My mom never questioned it. I'd worked my tail off through college and grad school. Much of high school and even when I was in junior high. It all worked out. I have friends who say they'd never have allowed me to do what I did. I bought my first house when I was 27. Retired in my 50s with a steady, lifetime income -- my house had been paid off for years. I'm so grateful that my mom taught me to be frugal with money. The difference between me and this guy -- I worked my butt off all the time and seldom made mistakes with my money. Parents who baby their children into adulthood will end up raising adult babies. Adult babies have poor life outcomes. As soon as they are old enough to do something, STOP DOING IT FOR THEM. If they are old enough to wipe their own butts, do their laundry, make them. If they are old enough to spend money, make them work for that money. Dr. D you can't just kick somebody out of your house. If they live there, receive mail there, then just packing their stuff and dumping it on the lawn is not something you can do. Evictions cost money and time and they make getting new housing very difficult. One parent got mad at us for being unable to re-house her daughter and she evicted her. Never mind that being beyond our office's capabilities, every agency we talked to saw the eviction and put her at the bottom of the list.

She and her husband need to accept and be ok with making their son homeless unless he can figure out some other living situation (like renting a room from someone else, having one or more roommates, etc.). But nothing is going to change while he's comfortably living at home.

Fortunately, my parents let me live with them during a period in my 30s. Very grateful to them, it let me save up money to buy a nice house with my wife…besides being able to save a large amount of money, it gave me a decade of quality time with them that I wouldn’t have had otherwise…it’s too bad that society, especially in this country, tries to shame people into not living with their parents even if they are able. It’s too bad that people have such bad relationships with their children/parents that this needs to be a contentious thing.

You worked during the time, and made progress. I helped a young adult, who came from an abusive background for 8 months. I got him a bank account, an electric bike, food storage materials, and take him to run errands once a week. No shame in being community, there is shame in being a mooch.

Sadly it is very common for older children to hang on and take advantage. My younger brother and I both moved out within 3 or 4 months of finishing our degrees, that was 40 plus years ago. We liked living at home but we both needed our own space, we are both homeowners now. My middle brother has lived in my parents house for over 90 percent of his life, had work for maybe 20 percent of the time. Dad died 2 years ago and left the house and a pile of assets to the deadbeat, total value over 1 million dollars!

Tbh MOST of us aren’t taking advantage, we either can’t afford to move out or moving out would be detrimental for our future. For example I’m a doctor in my 20’s living at home. If I move out I could JUST afford rent, I would have nothing left over and be 1 pay cheque away from defaulting on my rent. Living at home is giving me my only chance to save for a deposit.

It's a very hard situation for a parent. The problem here is not so much that the son is living at home, it's that he doesn't want to work. He is already 25 years old, not yet capable of supporting himself, and is not taking any steps to make himself capable. The parents are stuck between two hard choices: 1) kick him out, possibly causing him to live on the streets where who knows what can happen to him or 2) let him live at home and never learn to support himself so that he will be on the streets after the parents are dead. Very very sad.

I hear Jordan Peterson point out that parents should not let their children behave in such a way that people will not like them. This starts with 3-year-olds, but is true with 25-year-olds, too.

I would never kick a young adult out! Just get him to pitch in with chores in a timely manner, work with him on life skills, they don't teach them anymore, give him some responsibility, he needs to communicate more as well. It's a jungle out there, an expensive jungle! ❤️🙏💯

Many states require you to serve a “Notice to Quit” to any adult living in your home. If your adult child still refuses to leave, you may need to follow up with an eviction notice that gives a deadline for him to move out, typically thirty days.

How embarrassing. What weak parents!! When they die he WILL become homeless because they never put any responsibility on his shoulders. I can’t even imagine dealing with this. Oh yeah that’s cause I gave my son two choices when he was a senior in high school. Go into the military or college but at 18 you’re OUT OF HERE. My son chose college - Texas A&M and became an engineer. This mother has zero clue how to parent properly.

Some women have a tendency to coddle and go easier on the son(s) much more than their daughters. Tell him you guys are selling the house and moving into an over 55+ community...slowly start packing, don't buy alot of food/snacks, put a sale sign out front. At some point this mom and I'm guessing the step-father has to get serious and mean it.

A friend of mine son just died at age 56. He wouldn’t keep a job. He was too lazy to even get unemployment or disability. Each month my friend sent him money and enabled him. She gave him cars, an rv so he would have a home. He got into fights and criminal activity, even threatened my friend for money. For years she forgave him. Now that he died from his lifestyle she is blaming herself for not doing more.

Ya know, when I was 14 I asked my mom what we were gonna do about getting me a car. She said “you’re gonna get a job” I literally had one in a few months. My folks have helped me here and there but I have always held a full time job and supported myself. It’s really doing him a disservice by letting him off the hook of getting out there and busting a$$! It builds self-esteem, character and integrity.

It’s a strange age of parenting. I’m GenX and had my first job when I was 9 (a paper route). Summer jobs starting at 13 (babysitting followed by fast food, etc). Had an extensive work history by the time I applied for my first professional job. Paid for half of college bc my parents made me save 50% of all my earnings. I was proud to be working and loved having spending money. Worked out pretty well, but it all started with my parents.

Yeah the world has changed. Work is avoided wherever possible, and for some reason the parents of today cause this. Is this because they worked hard, as you say, early in life but don't want the same for their kids? You'd think they'd pass down the good ethics and that doing chores early on sets you up to just get on with them as an adult.

John is right. This kid doesn't work because he doesn't have to. I disagree though with kicking him out of the house. I have four young adult children between the ages of 18-26. They know they are always welcome in our home. That said, I raised them to understand that all the rooms in this house belong to ME. I've never allowed them complete "privacy" and, by that, I mean their rooms aren't off limits to me and I will go in them to check for food or dishes (which is not allowed in the bedrooms). They're used to this and, if they want privacy, they have to get their own place (which two of them have done). Once they graduate high school, I also charge rent unless they are enrolled in college full-time. I don't pay for their phones or vehicle expenses. Surprisingly, the phones is actually what motivated them more than anything else to get their first jobs. Now, I haven't run into any issues with the kids not paying their rent but they do understand that, if they don't pay rent, they will lose their bedroom and their "accommodations" will not be very comfortable. Lastly, they have chores. Everyone who lives in our home is expected to contribute. Sometimes they get tired of having to do chores and this has been enough to motivate them to get their own place. So far, this has worked for us.

It sounds like he might be on the Autism Spectrum. Before you shoot down my suggestion. Know that Autism Spectrum Disorder means that his brain runs on a different operating system. There are a lot of young adults who are part of the ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). There are plenty of websites that have a short quiz that could give you insights into how/where to get the support he needs so he can move forward. BTW having a diagnosis of ASD may “label” the elephant in the room, but that is only the beginning. Many people with ASD are helped by getting some CBTp (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).

I'm 33 years old living with my folks I have an ok job but I don't having savings, that's my fault I pay bills for my parents. What's not my fault are the prices of houses and apartments in America, saving isn't enough. I can't stand people who think kicking the kid out of the house is the only way for the him to grow up. A lot of people don't find their footing in life and wind up homeless drug addicts or constantly do dead end jobs until they retire with social security. Not saying this kid will turn out that way but this kid doesn't have the tools to survive and navigate life. Most people are scumbags and will stab you in the back or take advantage of you. They are good people out there but that's few and far in between, I don't blame the kid for shutting himself out from this psycho world we live in but parents need to step up and teach the kid basic life skills. I learned a little from my father but if this country didn't have crazy inflation I would've been looking for an apartment by now. It shouldn't be normal to have 3 jobs just to stay afloat, I'm sorry not looking to burn myself out, I work graveyard at a hotel.
