I’ve literally seen this movie at least 100 times! It inspired me greatly. I first saw it when it came out while i was in high school. I graduated and became a Marine. Although i wasn’t an officer but having that respect and character has remained with me my whole life. Mayo had to learn what it took to be a member of a team, to think of and care about others than himself. He finally learned it. Rest in Peace Lou Gossett Jr. ( Gunny Foley)!

I was barely 18, living off $3.05 an hour, and I went to see this movie 12 times at full price. It was Richard Gere’s character line that got me. Having nothing, but your own inner strength, and having to discover and overcome your own flaws. So awesome. Some 15 years later I was proposed to by a USN aviator, but declined. It wasn’t about Winger’s character being rescued. My pilot was an officer but not a gentleman.

Back then you could gauge the movie from the people coming out. It was a game sometimes for us to spoil a movie for people. One of my buds said, "Jaws gets electocuted" as we exited Jaws 2. We literally had to run to our cars. It took us hours to find where our two cars went. We would not have attended this movie but I remember waiting for The Wall at the Apollo Twin and they were still showing O&G. As the it let out, the women were all in tears and the boyfriends were embracing them. As it turned out, it was the best date movie to have ever been made since Love Story. And I was young but remember ladies coming out in just total hysterics from that movie at the Sheppard Twin.
