Welcome to another special episode of Mor Talks, where we dive deep into pivotal moments in history with esteemed guests. Today, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Kargil War, a significant event in India's military history. Our special guest for this episode is Ex-Major Manish Bhatnagar, who will share his insights and expertise on this crucial topic.
The Kargil War, fought between India and Pakistan in 1999, was a conflict that tested the mettle of the Indian Armed Forces and showcased the bravery and resilience of our soldiers. This episode aims to dissect the war from multiple perspectives, including the strategic decisions, the ground realities, and the leadership during the conflict.
Key points we will cover in this episode include:
*1. The Genesis of the Kargil Conflict:*
Understanding the geopolitical and strategic landscape that led to the Kargil War.
The initial intelligence and reconnaissance failures that allowed Pakistani forces to infiltrate Indian territory.
*2. The Tactical and Strategic Challenges:*
The terrain and weather conditions that made the conflict uniquely challenging.
The logistical and operational hurdles faced by the Indian Army.
*3. Leadership and Decision-Making:*
Analyzing the role of the military leadership during the conflict.
Was the Kargil War a failure of the generals? A critical examination of the decisions made at the highest levels of command.
*4. Stories of Valor and Sacrifice:*
Honoring the brave soldiers who fought and laid down their lives for the nation.
Personal anecdotes and stories from the battlefield, shared by Ex-Major Manish Bhatnagar.
*5. Lessons Learned and the Way Forward:*
Reflecting on the strategic and tactical lessons learned from the Kargil War.
How these lessons have shaped the modernization and preparedness of the Indian Armed Forces.
*6. Kargil Vijay Diwas:*
The significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas and how it is commemorated across the nation.
The message of resilience and patriotism that this day symbolizes for all Indians.
Ex-Major Manish Bhatnagar, with his extensive experience and firsthand knowledge, provides a unique and in-depth perspective on these topics. His analysis helps us understand the complexities of the Kargil War and the leadership dynamics involved.

Carrie (Brig Cariappa)sir rocks.. i also pray that he becomes a general.. thank you Yash sir and Bhatnagar sir for a wonderful dialogue🫡🫡… i just wanted to add why Carrie sir is so good human being…. In this fast paced world many even if they are good by nature dont have the time and patience to listen to your problems in life or help you in your darkest moments in life… Carrie sir was, is and will always be an exception and not only he gives a patient hearing but also picks you up from those dark times and re-orients your life … in a way he is not just a great soldier and an officer but an awesome human being… he himself has gone through a lot of hardships in his life.. so maybe he understands all of us…that is why, it is necessary that such great professional soldiers and Empathetic Human beings rise higher in ranks in the Army…May God’s blessings be always with him🙏🙏🫡

The most unfortunate thing is that we thought our military is an exception and that these things happen only in public sector / private sector civilian world. If we keep promoting non / less deserving candidates over the deserving/ experienced ones, it would ultimately hurt the interests of our nation in all walks of life. Was shocked to see the similarities with our public sector organisations. Keep up the good work Major Manish , best wishes 👍🏻💐

Fantastic talk Mor sahab. I read about Maj Manish Bhatnagar a few weeks back and also saw an interview on the same topic.I always had exactly the same questions in mind as to apart from Lt Gen YK Joshi no other CO from the Kargil war grew to the upper echelons of the armed forces, i am a civilian and i dont have full knowledge of these things, mine is just a ring side view. I have interviews of Brig Kushal Thakur, Brig Davinder Singh and the kind of passion that exhibited. Its a complete loss for the forces and the country. The over emphasis on intelligence failure in Kargil is just a cloak that hides the murky truth. Its obvious that we did not learn any thing from any of our wars or major skirmishes , that includes the heavy loss of lives in Galwan clash, again it was blamed on Intelligence failure. The only thing that we seem to learn ( as civilians) is the exemplary quality of the foot soldier and the front line officers. Knowing how opaque the system is, these details will never come out. Thanks for bringing another fabulous talk

Eye opener General Mor. It is known to all informed that the Kargil war was ill conceived and fought with poor planning. But we did not know that the better battle hardened planners and strategists were sidelined by the so called hierarchical superiority. Reforms based on experience and honest feedback in every sector is the key to achieving excellence. Though, it is generally ignored in every sector basically borne out of the self centred approach and vested interests of a selected few which ofcourse comes at a cost to the nation but if it happens in armed forces, it does not only prevent you from bringing in improvement in the learning system to achieve excellence but also results in preventable loss of precious human lives of that number which we saw in the Kargil war. Good to see you people taking pains for the course correction. Loopholes in the form of vested interest need to be identified and sidelined in the better interest of 'Ma Bharti' and at the same time officers like Brigadier Davinder Singh and Major Manish Bhatnagar are not made to suffer. Such reforms are necessary to keep the morale of the armed forces high. I am sure your efforts will bring in some positive outcomes in the times to come. Bravo.

Absolutely unconscionable that competent, brave officers were victimized and worse, punished, while higher-ups apparently were found to be either incompetent at best or negligent/complicit at worst! Terribly disappointing that COAS as the ultimate authority did nothing to hold himself and his staff officers accountable. Instead, brave lives were needlessly sacrificed. In any other country, an After Action Review would have been conducted to unearth facts and learn from serious lapses. Truly feel for these brave officers - they gave their all and received nothing in return! Shocking that the Court Martial proceeded with Maj. Bhatnagar’s dishonorable discharge despite facts supporting the contrary - i.e., supporting his contentions.

Gen Malik knew everything. His DGMO and staff had up to date info of daily skirmishes from Oct to May where the army was loosing officers and Jawans daily . Gen Malik briefed the Netas and babus and in Jan gave a presentation to navy in navy war room . The political dispensation headed by Pm Vajpayee his drunken partner Brijesh Mishra and a bum Chief of RAW were not bothered . To keep their political bosses happy the finance babus and mod did not bother and to get the chief away from their backs sent him on a useless trip to Poland and Czech Republic . Accountability of the defense secy and his minions including financial advisors should have been fixed as he is responsible for the defense of the nation . Incompetent generals the Div Cdr , corp Cdr and the army Cdr should have been replaced by the previous Gens who had served in the area . The nations higher defense organisation failed and was disgraced but saved by the young officers and ranks . Gen Malik Should have taken responsibility for the loss of lives and taken premature retirement to atone for the sins committed during his watch .

Even a blind man given a Good Situation Update Map would have seen the Drift .... But Padmanabhan(then the most experienced 3* General had moved to Southern Command for a well earned, Chief in the Making Break and Khanna from Pune replaced him in Udhampur .... The Corp Cdr & COS in Srinagar too was just in !!!
