Yo Calvin as me and you are James bond fans do you ever think of doing a video of bond movie fixing or what if ,like how to fix die another day or what if Pierce got a 5th bond movie and fixing Quantum of solace and what if daniel got a standalone bond movie in his prime before skyfall and fixing Spectre? And Calvin your the man to give us bond fans your opinion.

Calvin, I wanted to let you know that you have single-handedly caused me to rethink the Brosnan era and to love it. I was 25 when GoldenEye came out and I always took Brosnan's Bond for granted. But now I appreciate how good it actually was. I truly enjoy re-watching Brosnan's movies. Thank you!

As a long-time Brosnan Bond fan, I'm glad people are getting more positive on his movies. I've loved all four of these movies (yes, even that one) and I have constantly sung the praises of Pierce Brosnan as the one definitive James Bond. ...and honestly kinda makes me a bit sad that with the exception of Skyfall the Craig films really fell flat in my eyes.

1:01:00 What is funny is that German actor Claude-Oiver Rudolph (Akakievich) used to be quite vocal about his role in TWINE, often over-exaggerating it to that of a Bond-villain when it was a) such a small part with hardly a couple of lines and b) not even on the villains' side anways.

GREAT video! As per. I actually really like the moments you mentioned where Brosnan and Craig (in the Elektra/Blofeld scenes) do a few off-kilter line readings. It's like they're letting Bond the man and his emotional reactions to the situations in question peek out from the cold, professional exterior. Because I love little glimpses like that, while registering the line readings as off-kilter like you say, I don't find them out of character and embrace them as a result. I was 15 when this one came out and couldn't get enough, went to the cinema about 5 times and rented it every weekend until it came out to buy. I've cooled on it as time has gone on but I do naturally retain a very soft spot for this film. If I'm in the right mood, it's brilliantly entertaining. It still feels like the last Bond film in the "classic" mould. Which is nuts considering it was 25 years ago. And that it tweaks the formula more than it ever had been at that point (Bond girl/villain twist, expanded role for M etc), but despite that it still feels unmistakably 'classic' Bond.

1:41:33 I've always found it an interesting decision that in this scene Bond and M have matching outfits - white suits with a blue shirt. Don't know if that was an intentional decision, and if it was what it's supposed to signify (perhaps a way of unifying M and Bond, a nod to the fact that M is the closest thing Bond's ever had to a parental figure, but then why they felt the need to make such a nod I don't know). Probably best not to overthink it but even if it is just a coincidence, it's an interesting one. If anyone has Lindy Hemming's phone number perhaps they can ask her if it was a conscious clothing colour coordination.
@calvindyson
@calvindyson Ай бұрын
Oh hey now this is something I'll never not noice every time I rewatch TWINE! I'd be very interested to know if that was indeed coordinated or purely coincidence/subconcious. I really dig your reading of the symbolism behind it though!!
@yanngranger498
@yanngranger498 Ай бұрын
A simpler explanation would be office dress code but knowing the amazing thinking and attention to detail that Lindy Hemming put on her costume choice (see the audio commentary of Casino Royal, the Solange red dress for example) it's not far fetch to see a little deeper as you did!

Going from 10 to 15 minute reviews for Bond films because of the KZbin limits to now nearly 2 hour in depth reviews. The progress I’ve seen from this channel in watching for nearly 12 years has been amazing. Almost like my slow growing in love with The World is not enough. Went from bottom 3 Bond film. To a solid 11th or 12th Bond film, a movie I love to watch on a rainy day. Keep it up Calvin ❤

37:55 - I feel compelled to mention, Calvin, that the hologram projector from TWINE is used again for a breifing scene early on in 007: Everything or Nothing! It's a smaller version on M's desk that projects Diavolo's head while her and Bond are discussing the assignment. I absolutely adore that inclusion, since it is absolutely a direct reference to the scene in TWINE and the larger Brosnan-era. (Though as a kid, due to playing the EA games first before seeing the movies-- and if I recall correctly --I think I assumed that TWINE was actually referencing my favorite video game when that big hologram of Renard's head appeared!)

Pierce's accent going broad Irish in the deleted scene is odd. In interviews he always speaks with his unique Irish-English accent, and it tends to steer more towards English. I didn't realise he could slip back into broad Irish. I wonder why no one noticed on the day.

I fully understand Calvin's sentiment given that TWINE was one of the first Bond films he saw in the cinema; we all have that nostalgic feeling. But I would say that all of the issues Calvin does raise with the film (the early and contrived feelings Bond develops for Elektra, overblown moments, bad dialogue) were far more of a killer for me. I was only 14 when I saw this in the theatres and walked away bitterly disappointed. That opinion hasn't much changed the past 25 years; it's one that I skip during any Bond marathons on TV. It's amazing for a movie so long that they rush so many critical elements of the plot. Those are the moments that should've been explored further rather than the extended and slow-played development in the first 45 or so minutes of the film. Regardless, kudos to Calvin for producing one hell of a video! Very well done indeed!

I stand by my assertion that TWINE is in contention with Goldeneye for Brosnans best film. Ive always loved it because of the risks & surprises it takes with the Bond formula. Because of the way she operates and seduces Bond I really think that Elektra King is hands down one of the franchise’s best villains. At first blush you start to dismiss her as a stereotypical Bond girl THEN they get you to care about her so the ultimate betrayal just blindsides you like it does Bond. Also the score and title song are a pitch perfect synthesis of Garbage and David Arnolds brilliant work & collaboration. Arnold is one of if not the best Bond composer in the franchise. His work is incredibly underrated. He was the back bone of the franchise for almost 15 years.

Surprised no mention of Brosnan's 'I never miss' line when he dispatches Elektra. Partners well with his 'its what keeps me alive' in GoldenEye that gives a brief window into how much of a psychopath he is when you peel back the layers.

Also his response to Dr Kauffman saying 'I'm just a professional doing a job' is a blunt 'so am I' before killing him. For all people say Brosnan is the 'fun' Bond, he had his darker side.

In my head canon, Judi Dench's M is something of a George Smiley character of Bond universe. She obviously was a case officer (or, considering what happened in Skyfall, head of Station H), picked up for her abilities and when the old M retired, she replaced him (maybe her relationship was like Smiley's with Control). Her power is not physical but intellectual, she is ageing old lady above else, so she doesn't look threatening, which is her most potent weapon. She can pick her people and direct them well. Old M is basically Control (Le Carré deliberately wrote his books to subvert Fleming's) but now it seems Bond universe went for Le Carré's take to make itself more grounded.
@Mvoeikovjr
@Mvoeikovjr Ай бұрын
Love it! Pretty much how I always saw her character. I also always thought that perhaps at a time she herself was “the younger generation” and a symbol of change. A career intelligence officer who rose through the ranks, as opposed to a naval flag officer who was appointed to head the Mi-6 like the old M or Fleming’s superiors that served as inspiration.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Ай бұрын
@@Mvoeikovjr While in contrast the M Dench plays in the Craig era is very old school ['Christ I miss the cold war'], having done her time [including 11 years as Head of Hong Kong] and by Skyfall is 'raging against the dying of the light'. It shows what a good actress Dench is that she can play two different takes on the same character.

I got so familiar with the beats of it that I timed traveling along Lower Wacker Drive right off Lake Michigan so I would emerge from the tunnel as the music climaxed! Just to give context to anyone not familiar with Chicago landmarks Lower Wacker Drive is the lake side tunnel/road Batman chases Joker through in The Dark Knight. Fantastic job, Calvin! Watched it from start to finish without interruption. I rarely ever watch anything this long on KZbin, but it absolutely flew by and I still wanted more 👏 I'm also a big fan of The World Is Not Enough and think it's unfairly underrated. Lastly, a strange little knit-pick I've always had about the (amazing) boat chase sequence... I kind of dislike how grey and flat it looks. I know, I know.. It's London, England! It's very often drab and overcast, but I just think it would have been so much more dynamic with a nice blue sky and a hint of lense flare. Again, it's a small, strange knit-pick and I really do love the whole sequence and rank it right up there with some of the best in Bond though.

Count me in as one of those fellow TWINE lovers. I probably don't rank it quite as highly as you but it's certainly in my Top 10. This film is definitely Majesty's but "what if Tracy were the villain". A lot of parallels are there between the characters: damaged women, daddy issues, a scene with them losing a LOT of money in a casino, AND they copied the missing earlobes things from Blofeld so both villains have the same deformity. Shame this one will probably never get the same re-evaluation Majesty's had because it really is better than the fandom at large makes it out to be.

I think its the true sequel to GOLDENEYE over TND and there are days I much prefer to watch this movie over some of the other Bond movies and even Goldeneye itself.

As Barbara B stated 'Bond thinks he's found Tracy when he's actually found Blofeld' so OHMSS was very much on the filmmakers minds [as well as being linked with the title as that was first mentioned in OHMSS]. Bond is implied to be thinking of Tracy when Elektra asks if he's lost someone although as this came out 30 years after OHMSS it's not said explicitly.

Renard saving Bond's life at 7:37 [although as it's cut it's a little lost in the final film] is also a clear throw back to Red Grant doing the same in FRWL as he needs Bond alive for the rest of the plan to proceed.

Calvin, your theory about having two favorite Bond movies really got me thinking, and you're absolutely right. The first Bond movie I ever saw was Live and Let Die on TV, and the first one I experienced on the big screen was GoldenEye. To this day, both remain my two favorite Bond movies.

Tremendous work, Calvin! Such a joy to watch. Especially the part with the tour around the London filming locations 👏. I was in Istanbul last year, was amazed with how many Bond locations are actually there. Perhaps, we'll see something like that from you when you get to Skyfall 😁. Little off-topic. The deleted scene at 17:30 . I get that it references YOLT and Blofeld specifically, but I don't quite get the literal meaning behind the phrase "It only takes one". I'm not a native English-speaker, so if anyone can please explain the literal meaning of this phrase, I'd appreciate it greatly.

When I heard you were working on a very in-depth review of this film I was looking forward to this. As yourself we similarly got into Bond at the same time, and this was the first Bond film I saw in cinemas so it dose hold a dear place in my heart, one thing you didn’t mention that sticks out to me is how (I don’t think) this film has aged, I think this film still looks as fresh it did when it came out. I know this film (which I can’t get my head around) gets a bad rap as being boring, I don’t see it, this ranks in the top tier for me, it is a favourite. Very good video as always, had to watch in stages as so long but loved it more for the length, and as well very funny skits in between. Keep up the great videos I love em

This is an unimportant detail and I am probably the only one who cares, but in the church scene @40:23, we see Elektra King doing the sign of the cross. I am wondering if she does it from left to right (the form used in most Western churches) or right to left (mainly used in Eastern churches). The left to right seems the most probable, because the actress is French and probably did not overthink it (as I am doing right now). The character is British from a Scottish father, so left-to-right is credible (the form used by the Church of Scotland). But it wouldn't have been out of character for Elektra to do it right-to-left, given the circumstances, as a sign of respect in front of the Orthodox priest.

22:40 Thank you for spending some time on my personal favourite Bond mystery!! I also have absolutely no idea why Michael Apted essentially straight up bullshits about coming up with the whole boat chase pre-titles himself (which I always find hilarious), but I also subscribe to the idea that the chase was maybe moved after the titles in some cut. Sometime. Maybe. I'd *love* to know where this myth originated from!

The alternative cut/trying out different edits thing is the only rational explanation I can think of as to why he'd be seemingly corroborating that rumour... Unless he just figured it was too widespread and rather than spend the rest of his life correcting people, just embraced it as fact? "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend" kind of thing?
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja Ай бұрын
In fairness the first two Craig films start off with a short pre-title sequence followed by a massive chase post credits so maybe that was something they were playing about with editing here [and changed it when they realised that the Spanish sequence was a bit of a flat beginning] although the previous Brosnan's film's pre-titles are about 10 mins so there was precedence for a long opening. I have seen speculation that QOS had the chase sequence in pre-title sequence at one stage as when Bond shoots Mitchell it could have lead into a gunbarrel like Casino and the next scene does feel like it's a 'back from the titles' exposition one but I've not seen anything to back it up.

@@calvindyson An update! 007 Magazine claims that "The World Is Not Enough was previewed at a Multiplex cinema in Reading, Berkshire on August 3, 1999...The preview audience reaction was mixed, leaving Director Michael Apted and Editor Jim Clark disappointed. Changes were made, including restoring the Thames river chase into the pre-credit sequence as it had been in Purvis & Wade’s first draft of the screenplay". An Ain't It Cool News article from the time corroborates the preview ("Last night (Tuesday 3/8/99) there were test screenings of the new Bond film held in Reading (England) at the Showcase cinema") but unfortunately has no details on whether the info about the cut is accurate! But, if it is, it does seem that a preview cut moved the boat chase to somewhere it wasn't in the script...! Would love to find some details from people actually at that preview screening...

Brosnan was never better, that pre-title sequence on the Thames is unmatched and what an underrated pair of villains. I had the pleasure of meeting Denise Richards at a wedding and told her how much I loved her in this and Starship Troopers. She was lovely.

Really great video Calvin! I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was well worth the wait. TWINE sits in the middle of my ranking, outside of my top 10. I was a teenager in the 90s and became a Bond fan during the Brosnan era so I also really like his films (except DAD which I actually loathe). I watched it a few months ago and it was probably the most enjoyment that I ever got from it. I really like the decision to give Dench a bigger role. Having an actor of her caliber and only giving her a few lines of exposition is like hiring a Michelin star chef and only asking him to make toast. The PTS is extraordinary, and Sophie Marceau is great and her confidence in her own ability to manipulate people is fascinating (I love how totally unhinged she is at the very end when she is running up the stairs - "You can't kill me, not in cold blood"). For me, the downsides are that the action peaks significantly in the PTS. The other action scenes are OK but nowhere near the sheer enjoyment of the Q-Boat. The soap opera nature of some of the scenes is a bit grating, and I totally check out of the movie after Electra's death. The sub finale does nothing for me unfortunately. Also, I used to think Renard was a bit of a damp squib of a villain, but after hearing you discuss the power dynamic between him and Electra, that is probably the point. Thanks again for another great review.

I agree it would have been better if they could have re-arranged it so Elketra's death was the climax [similar to how Living Daylights has an action ending and then the Whittaker take down] although I'm not sure off the top of my head how that would be done story wise. I agree the action peaks very early with the boat chase [Again, wouldn't work at all story wise but imagine if that was the finale...].

As I was a bit older at the time of release (eighteen), I didn't really appreciate this particular entry in the Bond franchise, except for Sophie Marceau - but your thorough dissection somewhat brought me around on the subject. I had never heard of the deleted scenes and the stuff cut from the original screenplay, nor of the background details included in the novelization. So thanks for that - great video!
