I was commissioned in the Indian Navy in 1995....and Vande Mataram came in a couple of years later. I still remember showing off AR as "my city boy" to my colleagues in Whites, a genius who had come up with such magical stuff, going beyond Roja and Rangeela which had made him a popular name with non Tamil audiences. I secretly relished the fact how Poraale Ponnuthaayi from karuthamma by AR was reborn as Chanda Suraj Lakhon Taare... with Nusrat Saab...There are so many personal memories with AR's journey.. one celebrates his success as one would do with a family member...It's destiny that my son has chosen a career in music, graduating from AR's music conservatory last year....On that note, KM conservatory deserves a dedicated episode in this series.

I do not think any Indian can listen to Rehman's version of Vande Mataram without tears in the eyes. We had heard this song in the Sanskrit version in the film Anand Math. But many did not get moved until this Hindi version. But Rehman truly made this a song for every Indian. Great that Sony Music gave him this opportunity. Also, Rahman singing it made all the difference. And I marvel at the manner in which it got international recognition despite being a national song! I must also appreciate the O2 team for issuing this to coincide with Independence Day instead of waiting till Thursday. Looking forward to recording of Rahman interview of 1997.

It’s hard to verbalise or write down the sociocultural impact this album or ARR’s consistently pathbreaking pantheon of other masterpieces, has made globally to hopefully non-Indians too. A paean to nationalist pride and patriotic fervour, yet a rousing subtextual pietic ode to our mothers ( unsurprisingly he took her to the release!). Goosepimples every time… and such an apt well articulated ‘commercial’ tribute.. Fantastic job as always @UmeshAggarwal leading interviews, and @Sony

To me, unarguably, no one in film music history can evoke such powerful non-dil/mohabbat emblematic metaphorical emotions. The diversity of portraying them effectively in a novel way each time is going to be unmatched…

Looks like this Sridhar Subramaniam had no idea who Rahman was and what his capabilities were. This is what happens when you think like a soulless businessman, and suddenly see success because of someone else's effort.

Dear Mr.Narendran. Thanks you very much for watching and sharing your thoughts. With due respect to your opinion, allow us to mention that it was in 1997, when Sony amongst the biggest record labels in the world reached out to Mr. Rahman. My Rahman himself says (on the show) that when Sony Music recahed out to him... 'it rang a bell". Do you really think that an international record lable will reach out to an artist, without knowing his/her capabilities? Mr. Subhramaiam says, " Sony music had realised, that Mr. Rahman will continue to evolve, he is not a one hit wonder". That what attracted Sony to Mr. Rahman and they have stayed together since then. We appreciate your affection for Mr. Rahman, we thought it is equally important to put things in perspective. We really value - viewers like you. kindly stay with us. Regards.
