I used to obsess over thumbnails, now, the ad will play typically before you even see the thumbnail, so I don't worry about them. I use auto thumbnails typically. Metrics wise, you should always start with profitability side metrics, such as your ROAS, CPA and profit per ad, from there if you're unprofitable, I would look at the CTR, CPCs, CPM's, hold rate and thumbnail stop rate.
