I took my a6000 on my trip to the Bahamas last week and it was great! I know it’s limits though - not near as good in low light as my a7iii, and you have to consider the crop factor. I like it for airshows because I can get that extra oomph with my 24-240mm.

The best camera is the one you have with you, and I’m much more likely to carry a lighter less bulky rig on an outing. The A6000 and Sony 70-350mm make a nice amateur wildlife kit. When I upgrade bodies it would be mostly for more advanced focusing. For low light I use DXO Photolab 6 Elite’s Deep Prime noise reduction. It’s much cheaper than a new body.

@@mikesphotography I still use my old NEX6 as a spare body. It does fine for less demanding situations with good light and not fast motion. In fact the EVM on the NEX6 has much higher resolution than the A6000. It’s great for stuff like still life, portraits, and working with manual focus lenses.

Rather than a battle of sensors, between cropped and full-frame, I'd say that "Quality Glass" is king every time, in good lighting conditions. Go shooting at night, and there's no contest no matter how much money you throw at glass. Maybe you could review two lenses, with the same focal length, which are from opposite ends of the price range? Maybe a lens which is around a step up from the standard "Kit Lens" and the best lens that you can get your hands on for your Sony A7iv. Is it Ok to be smug with my Micro Four Thirds camera which can shoot 75 RAW+JPEG frames a second and be powered all day from a cheap external USB power-pack.😇

I got my A6000 from a friend for 150€ with 4 vintage lenses. I hated it at first when coming from D3200 but it's starting to grow on me. I intend to pair it up with a wide angle prime or zoom for landscapes, as well as astrophotography, just not right now. Stacking helps heaps with the noise so if you can, give it a try.

Interesting comparison Mike. I opted for the A7c as my photography camera as I really like the compact size but the full frame benefits. There is a compromise with the viewfinder but I prefer that to the bulkiness of the bigger full frame cameras

Another interesting video Mike, I am a A6600 crop sensor amateur/hobbyist & don't think i will be moving to FF in the future. i believe with a quality lens onboard the APSC it definitely gives the more expensive FF cameras a run for the money, more so with the lovely focusing system on the 6600. I think my money will be spent on another lens. (SONY 70-350 G OSS to use alongside my newly acquired Tamron 17-70 f2.8

Interesting comparison Mike, however having never owned or used the A6000 I am not the person to ask. My journey with Sony started over 20 years ago with the A200, A65, A77mkii, all crop sensor cameras. The older I get has made me realise how heavy these cameras were to hump around with upto 6 lenses, most of which rarely got used!! The A7lV is such a brilliant camera and with only 2 lenes makes a very lightweight system that fits easily into a Lowepro A200 sling back pack that is very compact and much easier to carry. The benefit of a full frame sensor with a stunning dynamic range and low light performance makes me wonder how I managed previously. My advice would be, get the best you can afford and embrace the new technology available. Would you buy a 10-20 year old car and expect it to be as good as a newer one!!! Looks like the weather is picking up at last, next week is looking drier and warmer, have a great weekend, Barry

Sony's team had a genius planning with the a6000. One of the best if not thee best entry camera for digital photography in my noob opinion. The price, the versatility, and compatibility with the actual full frame eMount made it a perfect gateway to other sony cameras. It was my first camera, and I loved using it as much as I could, even though photography is just my hobby. That camera was nearly successful in getting me to go full frame, until fujifilm swayed me with the x100v and got me to stay cropped XD As always, your videos are amazingly entertaining, educational, and above all, inspiring! And that location is beautiful beyond words. The comparisons were great, and I could feel the rush of trying to get that light in time XD It was worth it! Cheers Mike!!!

Topside post, well timed - helpful image comparisons, using same lens a plus. IMO, quality image is the end product of gear, ergonomics, and photographer skills, knowledge and abilities w/that gear as well as editing software. Complex equation. Comfort and usability are key to creativity; not going to much use stuff that’s a pain to carry and use. A6000 was my first mirrorless cam - had its flaws (poor battery - A6600 and A74 use same, now - noisy shutter, no IBIS, light-leaking lens flange (replaceable DIY)) - a crappy in-camera pano mode, and fussy hot shoe. But E-mount adapted to vintage lenses, had pop-up flash and was fun to use. Got some fine images. What focal length did the A6000 report in the display for the full frame Tamron (equivalent, or literal)? Recent YT channel did a “still worth it in 2023” for A6600. His comparison was to A74 - his preference. Not a fair comparison; apples/oranges, IMO. His gripes included lack of more custom buttons and front dial. Go figure. No picnic table in this one, but the alarm clock made a cameo😊. Cheers!
@mikesphotography

As always thanks for watching and commenting Paul. I know what you mean about the pano mode. It really is a gimmick. The A6600 is definitely a fantastic upgrade from the A6000 especially with the Z type battery and the newer focussing system ... I'd say compared with the a74, that would be a little brother to it. No picnic tables at the top of this mountain, but definitely had to get at least one easter-egg in there!! 😆 As always thanks for watching 😁👍

The crop sensor comparison is a bit of a misnomer. If you were to crop manually on the full-frame, the image size would be the same. That said, convenience-wise, the crop sensor works well. Some of the benefits of the crop sensor can be realized with changing the setting on the full frame camera, but not the weight! For example, my full frame has a crop sensor setting, which also has the benefits of a traditional view finder, where I can see what’s outside of the frame. Having said all that, I am interested in a smaller system just for sports. Thank you for this comparison. Once again, you present useful information in an engaging way.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
I completely agree Pete. The great thing with having something like this in my bag is that it gives me that little extra reach at a slightly higher Mp count than the crop mode in my A7iv. It would be great to own the A7v though with that option built in due to the higher initial Mp count. As always thanks for watching 😁👍

A great comparison Mike. Interesting timing as I've just decided to upgrade my glass on the a6000 rather than switching full frame. I would say, my experience of battery life isn't anywhere near those numbers you flashed on screen. I've done astro shoots with 4000+ images shot on 2 batteries. Maybe because it's constantly shooting rather than the screen displaying all the time that makes a big difference?
@sue.Hoo123
@sue.Hoo123 Жыл бұрын
The official battery life figures given by all manufacturers are based on switching on camera, take a photo, switching off camera, repeat until battery runs out. In the real world we tend to take more than one image before switching off which is why we can take a thousand, or more shots on a battery with a stated 350 shots, especially if using bursts.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
Thanks James. Those figures were taken from the official websites, so like Sue said, they go through the whole process, but like you said, if you have the camera on constantly shooting, without the evf/monitor on, this would increase the amount you could take per charge. Is that Cadair Idris? I used to have a Sony NEX6, which I think was the precursor to the A6000. It was a fun camera, 16 MP great results. As you say newer, (more expensive), cameras have features that make it easier, not necessarily better. If I mainly took Landscape images I wouldn’t be looking to upgrade, but as a mainly Wildlife photographer the improvements in AF and particularly subject recognition make things a lot easier. A really decent evf is a must for me too. Another good vlog, thank you.

Yes it is Cader Idris! One of my favourites to hike. This was my first one from the Dolgellau side as I've only hiked it from the south before. You're right about wildlife. The more up to date autofocussing systems make it so much easier to get focus and lock on to a moving subject. I used to shoot sports in the 90s on a Canon EOS 5, and that thing was hard to track focus, with one decent crosshair focussing point in the center!! 😆 Thanks for watching 😁👍

@@sue.Hoo123 From the Dolgellau side is definitely easier. Thanks Linda. The A7c is a great camera that almost takes the best bits of both systems. I haven't really noticed a colour shift with it, it might be worth printing some images from it to see how they come out. @@dsam3 Good light is very subjective. What looks good on one landscape might look rubbish on another ... and what looks good to one person, again might look rubbish to another. Good light to me is when it brings out the best in a landscape and a lot of times this can be direct sunlight light, low in the sky, giving long shadows and micro contrast on your subject, or the most interesting thing in your frame. I have shots that I have taken in the middle of the day that I love, but I also have shots that I have taken in the golden hour that I also really like. I would suggest something like the Canon 650D or the latest version of it. Although with the price of the A6000 being really good second hand, I'd probably go with something like that over a dslr as it is so much more user friendly and speeds up the learning process. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Some systems just don't have the volume right now, but hopefully they will get better. This is one thing with Sony cameras. Because they have been making the A series for a while now, and they keep the tech open for third parties, we do have a huge selection of lenses to ponder over ... the trick is to not spend every single penny on kit... 🙈

If I take astrophotos at APS-C with F1.4 and ISO 1600, I have the same dynamic range and noise as with FF F2.0 and ISO 3200. The image quality can only be better with FF if you use the same aperture and ISO as on APS-C. With the Viltrox 13mm F1.4 you can make exactly the same image as with the Sony 20mm at f2 on FF and then the Sony has a much stronger vignette if you want to have an advantage then you have to take Sigma 20 f1.4 and then you pay and drag. The only better focal length for astro is 14mm on FF because on Aps-c it is only 10mmF2 but on FF it is 14mmF1.8 is the same the problem 😭vignette of the Sony of 2.8 stops darker corners, the Meike 10F2 only has an edge darkening of 1.7 if the Sony is corrected in post processing so that no more vignette is visible then I have more noise than with the Meike. the Sigma 14mmF1.8 has less vignette but weighs 1,2kg and can't use screw filters, it's always the same game on the one hand FF is better but you have to accept weight, price or more vignette. I sold my A7iii, the Sony 14 and 20mm, kept the a6600, bought the Viltrox and Meike, there is still 1800€ left, and have partly better pictures.

Good video mike, i got my first camera (Canon 3000d) in 2019 and only got into photography recently. Decent but the stock lense didn't have enough zoom and wide angle for me (i mainly do landscape for hobby), recently thinking on buying a new camera but the prices really put me out. Thanks very much! It will be tricky getting a Sony A6000 as they have stopped making it from new. The best way is to get a second hand one, then you'll get it really cheap, but this won't help if mum and dad won't let you buy from e-bay. It might be worth going in to a store to see what you can get from them and see what you like. This is what I would do. Local camera stores also sometimes have a good second hand selection. It's hard to say as I haven't used the A6300... here's an article comparing the two: mirrorlesscomparison.com/sony-vs-sony/a6300-vs-a6000/ personally, I'd upgrade to the A7iv. The focussing system is fantastic and would be idea for bird photography... and when paired with the 200-600mm, that would be an amazing combination.

Mike, are the lenses interchangeable between A6000 and A7III?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
Hi Edward, Yes they are, it is the same mount. However, the lenses that are made for the a6000 series of cameras are designed for a crop sensor, so even though you can put the crop lenses on the a7iii, it might show some hard vignetting. Like in this short video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3m3paSVpN2MmKs On the other hand, the Sony FE mount lenses, designed for full frame cameras, work well on the crop sensor system. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching 😁👍

I have a A7 III, . And a want to upgrade, and choose another companion for it. I do both photo and video, do you think. Is better to relay on the photo capabilities of the a73, and improve on a more video camera, relay on a73 video capabilities and improve on a better photo camera. Or just don’t buy nothing and improve my lens option. Thanks 👍

Hey Alberto, That's cool to have an injection of cash you can invest in your gear with. First of all, what lenses do you currently own? And do you feel like you are lacking in any focal lengths? For instance, do you feel like you need more reach, or does your widest lens not get everything in? Secondly, how much filming video do you do compared to photography?

If you are not carrying the camera for extended time and weight is a major factor, go full frame. Also, the latest generation of lenses are much lighter. Try the Tamron 28-200 for versatility, weight and cost. The combo makes the. 6000 series in the dust.

That sounds like a good idea! Ive had the rx100ii, the a6000 and the a7iii in some pretty harsh conditions and they have all survived really well, so I don't think it is too much of a problem. The biggest thing for me is how good the weather sealing is on the lenses.
