Hello Masa-sensei, Question about this phrase i saw. Dialogue is doctor is talking to a severely injured patient: 生かされ…応えたというほかない I’m not sure how to interpret this sentence with た past tense verb + という and then with ほかない “You were saved / allowed to live… I have no choice but to say you responded (to that)” I’m not sure if this would be accurate way of reading this. Thank you in advance if you answer this
