Awesome! Thanks for sharing Captain Zac & Mary! The last time I was in Alaska was 1981, on the fishing vessel Billikin, a 135-footer, catching King crab, Opilio (Snow crab), and Bairdi Tanner crab for Trident Seafoods. June 19, 2024 New Sub, yes indeed. Lord be praised!

Nice Capt Zac--- love it. Nice fish sir! So, on my way back from Alaska on the cruise. Fished Icy Point on a charter (beautiful scenery, saw whales/orcas, nice captain-- but skunked); caught my first dolly varden in skagway (the harbor and Pullrn Creek) and my first 18 lb King in a few decades on a kastmaster in Ketchikan near creek street. 6 hours of casting with my son-- was an exciting fight from land. As always Capt Zac-- thanks for your vids and suggestions

Hey @knighttenkoa-gamersouthern5236 thanks for the recap and I'm glad to hear that your persistence paid off! Too bad Icy Point didn't pan out but the whales were probably cool to see. Awesome to hear about the dolly in Skagway and CONGRATS on that King in Ketchikan! I bet that battle from shore was a blast. Were you able to keep that fish? Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Haha this is awesome! Yes I'm very fortunate to have a fantastic first mate - she did a great job landing this fish (clearing the gear first then netting it on the first scoop!)! Yes indeed - the halibut salad sandwich on wheat is my secret weapon to catch kings! Definitely let me know if you happen to make your way through Juneau - it would be great to meet up! As Always Awesome! I notice you don’t “set” the hook . Salmon does it for you pulling out of the rigger ? What’s the small strip center of fillet you pull out ? Dumpster chickens clean up the scraps quick.😂
@CaptainZac4 ай бұрын
Hey @Cntrmass many thanks for the positive comment and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! Correct - since the boat is in forward gear and the fish has already popped the clip (so it grabbed the bait and yanked hard), the hook was already set. That small strip of white dots that I removed come from how close I fillet to the spine. To ensure maximum meat yield, I cut very close to the spine which leaves a small trip of white (which is easily removed). Haha yes indeed the ravens LOVE hanging out by the fillet table! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Great king salmon! Hope to get into a couple kings next week! How deep are you finding them at? I was thinking of starting at 50-60’ and working around that! Any thoughts? I love your excitement even though have caught probably hundreds of thousands of fish that’s great!
@CaptainZac4 ай бұрын
Hey @stevencarlson1615 thanks for the positive comment! These fish came relatively shallow (downrigger at 20-25 in about 50-60 feet of water total) in the terminal area but if you are targeting feeder kings I would aim for 80-120 feet. I hope you find some kings willing to bite - tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

@CaptainZac4 ай бұрын
Thanks @martinbanos4389! While white kings overall are fairly rare (about 5% of kings), our local hatchery run of fish tends to produce more than 5% white kings. Check out more about it here: www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=wildlifenews.view_article&articles_id=738 Tight lines! Captain Zac

@@CaptainZac I am my wife's first mate. She is blind, but loves to fish. I make sure her rod is pointed at the fish and she does the rest. She out fishes me 5:1. Hey I'll be in Petersburg in a few weeks also - perhaps we'll cross paths! No Blind Slough kings but we can still troll for "feeder kings." Nice fish. Just wondering why you net salmon from the swim platform?
@CaptainZac4 ай бұрын
Thanks @tjbron1! Primarily for more reach and quicker ability to get a chance to net it - since a fish while trolling almost always arrives to the boat closest to the rear extended transom / swim platform. We typically only do this in calm conditions to ensure safety. Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac

Hey @tacticalmarshing9548 - this is a white king salmon which is further explained here: www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=wildlifenews.view_article&articles_id=738.
