God dude, as hard as it is to manage ones nerves while fighting a fish to the boat just to have that nagging worry about getting it netted with someone else doing the net job, doing it by yourself must be agonizing. Great job keeping your calm and getting them in the boat. I can't imagine the stress involved trying to get it done alone. Not to mention being on camera just to add a bit more pressure to look half way decent trying to get it in the boat. Not to mention keeping the boat captained the whole time so you don't end up on rocks, into other boats or in a bad position. Thank you for sharing the wins, loses and grinding it out the hard way. Many channels are too vain to show it but it's nice to see it all. Well done and keep it up.

Hi Go Boyz thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! I really appreciate the kind words! Fishing for king salmon alone is certainly an exciting challenge - all of the stars must align to between when the fish strikes and when it hits the net. I enjoy this "dance" trying to land king salmon - even if sometimes it isn't the smoothest process! haha Many thanks once again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

An awesome outing on the high tide. That one looked like a football. Glad you got into a few kings and a dolly. I thought you were going to break your rod trying to net the last 2 fish. Glad it worked out and they didn’t pop off. Good thing you changed to new hooks after that first fish. 👍

Hi Adrian thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon trolling action! Yes indeed - I was very fortunate that both of those last two fish eventually got in the net. Those trolling rods are super limber which works great when "playing them out" during the battle but can be a bit awkward once you get the fish to the boat! I hope all is well on your end my friend - tight lines and thanks again! Captain Zac

Hi Andy thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! Yes indeed - so many things can go wrong when a king salmon is hooked that the odds are certainly stacked against the "solo troller." I love the challenge of navigating all of these variables when battling a king - sometimes the fish hits the net but I certainly have my share of close call misses as well (learning opportunities!). Hi Steven many thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! While I do have my US Coast Guard Captain's License, I'm not current running a charter since I'm still navigating a corporate job alongside the Alaskan adventures. Captain Alan is a great guy and has a sweet new boat - adventuresinalaskacharters.com/ Also, if you are coming in September, you may be interested in some shore fishing for cohos down at the McCauley Hatchery (DIPAC). I had two friends run down there with some salmon eggs after we went halibut fishing in early/mid September and they came back with 12 huge cohos (two limits)! Every year I'll sneak down there and catch a few on salmon eggs just to mix it up. There is an area for snagging as well down there (which isn't my thing but attracts a lot of people). The area closest to the hatchery is closed to snagging but open to bait / lures / flies. It can become combat fishing down there so I like the super early mornings. Sheep Creek (south of town) is another option for shore fishing cohos. I spoke with a few guys last year who come up here every year for a week during that time and just absolutely slay the cohos from shore at DIPAC and Sheep Creek - and bring home hundreds of pounds of fillets at the end of the week. Just food for thought. If you do end up making it to Juneau please let me know your dates - it would be cool to cross paths! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

I tend to do a lot of fishing myself too. I find it for me works well when I catch one is when it gets up closer and I’m getting closer to netting it. I’ll literally set my pole down and handle the rest of it with the net right next to me so when I’m ready, I’ll get it nice and close hand lining it, and then take the other hand to dip it down in there and pull at the same time, I find to have a lot more success that way I have lost fish specially coal by trying to land the fish with the rod because the rods going up and down and if there’s any slack and you don’t notice it, I sometimes the hook pops out

Good job, I like to recommend couple of advice. Please stop the boat when you feel like the hook is set good. No need to fight extra drag of boat moving forward. Also turn on the clicker, it will tell the viewers what the fish is doing. Plus, the clicker sound is very sweet when the fish is running.
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joey thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! I appreciate the suggestions and will consider them. One reason to leave the boat in gear (even slightly in gear) is to help maintain constant pressure and avoid a thrown/slacked hook. Especially when fishing in a relatively compact/shallow spot like this, if I took the boat completely out of gear the fish would likely start running in unpredictable directions, including fast runs towards me that could result in a slacked line and possibly a lost fish (running an in-line flasher doesn't make it any easier to keep perfect tension either). Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Hey Zac! Nice video, I was hoping you’d share the long version of the 3 kings. Question: I always hear that you should fish for salmon on an incoming tide, yet you targeted the outgoing tide. Can you speak to that? Also, love how you work the fish and tire them out. So many drag ‘em to the boat in 3 minutes and net them super fast. Can’t do that when you’re by yourself! Can’t believe you got 4 netting attempts on that last fish…obviously well hooked. Well done!
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! Good question - while many would suggest that the incoming tide is good for salmon because it is bringing fresh fish in, this terminal fishery (a cove near Juneau) is tricky because fish arrive here and essentially never leave unless they stray to nearby waters - most of these kings are hatchery fish arriving to this cove as their final stop. I've caught fish at every tide cycle here. There are a lot of other factors that determine when the bite will turn on and some of it is honestly just exposure and trying different depths and presentations. Besides the tides (the most important factor), other factors include the size of the tide (large tides bring more fish in), bright sun vs. rain and clouds, weather front vs. stable conditions, wind, timing of season (each day/week that goes by the fish numbers and aggressiveness changes), fishing pressure, presence of bait balls, orca / sea lion activity, etc. And as much as I hate to say it, a little luck is a factor as well! haha Yes indeed - I was lucky to get that last fish after the netting debacle. Those sharp hooks helped! All the best and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Zac, Awesome job there on the Kings. Too bad you weren't able to pull off that limit but that the way it goes fishing. 3 Kings over 15lbs in the boat for a man by himself is a great day for sure. Looks like you need a person for netting to help you out a bit. Your gear must have been in tip top shape. So much can go south with bigger Kings. Any Coho showing up yet? I am heading up to Sitka in 2 days. Good luck and tight lines.
@CaptainZac

Hey there Mark many thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action, even if that net job was a little shaky on fish #2 and a total mess on fish #3! Haha I enjoy the challenge of solo king trolling and certainly understand what you mean by things going south quickly with big kings. On this day I was fortunate that all the stars aligned and each of these fish hit the net, eventually! haha Yes - some spotty cohos are showing up near Juneau but not that many folks are fishing for them now (people have king salmon in their sights!). I'm confident that this weekend more and more folks will venture out and start picking up cohos. My friend caught one yesterday trolling near Funter Bay - a good sign since that's pretty far inside as compared to Sitka. I assume Sitka will have plenty of coho action at this point. Great videos! Hope you have time to answer a question about downrigger setup... I have a Hewescraft ProV getting rigged with 4x Cannon downriggers. Can't seem to find a power cable solution that will get power connectors at rear of boat and still have enough cable length from the downriggers to be plugged in. Down rigger power cables are only 36" long... Noticed you are running Cannons as well. Do your have a long power cable running from the stern fish box area or did you come up with a different solution? Appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! Congrats on the sweet new rig and 4 Cannon downriggers should get you on those salmon in no time! Sorry to hear about the power cord length issue. My power cables run from the battery area (behind the stern fish box) through the top of the gunnel - this cable has a plug on it which I then plug into the downrigger cable once the downrigger is mounted on the bracket. I'm not 100% sure if oversized power cables were used - you might try calling Tom & Jerry's Boat Center (tomnjerrys.net/) and asking them this question. They rig a ton of Hewescrafts (including mine a few years ago!) and would have deep knowledge of specific cables/lengths/configurations. Sorry I don't have a more precise answer here but I hope this helps add a few ideas to the mix. Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Hi Cheyne thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon footage! Good luck on the 1st - hopefully you can get right after them! Funny you ask - one of my KZbin subscribers happened to be in Juneau on a trip and we crossed paths for a great intro discussion. He brought me a few of these bungie clips which he designed for this exact purpose - and they work great! Perhaps I'll do a how-to video highlighting this subtle but important tool. It is basically a thin bungie cord (or a thick hair tie) with an adjustable clip so you can tighten or loosen based on desired thickness. It holds the bag of the net out of the way during most times, and when the fish is netted and pressure is applied, it releases and the bag falls down to capture the fish. A cool tool that makes a big difference, especially when solo trolling! Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

The joy of fishing alone when you scoop and miss. The oh crap feeling and wondering if it's still there. I fish alone for kings in California and it helps to get a short rod when your solo.
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray thanks for tuning in and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon footage! Sounds like you've had that same experience with a king close to the boat but seemingly impossible to net! A short rod is a good idea - I suppose you'd lose some of the benefit of "playing them out" that a longer rod gives you but you would have less to deal with at the boat. Makes sense! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
@RaynBella
@RaynBella 2 жыл бұрын
@@CaptainZac The short rod is a little less forgiving but it's gold when they come in tight to the boat. In California, maybe in Alaska, we are barbless so you get use to keeping pressure on them. You will find most guys running 65# braid with 50# floro as a top shot. Salmon are not line shy so it works out. We can also gaff, most don't, but it's easier on big fish than a net.

@@CaptainZac Yer welcome Zac. I visited Alaska once...Homer and then Seward. I had a good time and caught some fish. In Seward I had the best fish & chips I've ever had at a street side vender. I sat at the picnic table next to a creek while eating and watched big salmon swim up the creek. :)

Thanks Patrick! I typically use either a Lazer Sharp or Gamakatsu pre-packaged 30lb test 2-hook (3/0 - 4/0) sliding mooching rig or sometimes I'll hand tied a 2-hook fixed 40lb flurocarbon leader (especially in bigger seas or the salmon derby) with 4/0 Gamakatsu Big River hooks.

@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bones 805 thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon footage! Both my main and kicker have a "kill switch" but I do not attach the cord to myself (I just attach it to the key). I try to avoid really extreme conditions where such a switch would be most appropriate. Do you ever navigate / fish with a kill switch attached? These also might be more typical on open skiffs where the risk of getting thrown from the boat is higher (vs. an enclosed cabin). Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

@@CaptainZac I do use one if I am solo. It's kind of a pain but doable. I just have a long-ish 1/8" nylon cord attached to a clip on my belt. They now make electronic ones so you don't need the cord but I have not looked into them. BTW I think they are a requirement in California now for boats under 26'

Hey Cap, Why is the deep bag on the landing net so necessary?
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 8 ай бұрын
Hi @natewendt5890 thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! The deep bag helps ensure that once the fish is netted that it won't flop/jump away. Additionally, there are times when someone could prefer to leave the fish in the water while unhooking (such as a small king they are trying to release) where a deeper bag would enable this more easily - keeping the fish contained within the net vs. having it thrashing around and potentially breaking the line. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

Incredible day out there. What do you consider it when one person gets 3 fish? What are the limits up there? 👍
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peeling line thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon footage! I appreciate the positive comment! When one person gets three king salmon while trolling with only one rod - that's a great day around here. Any time you catch a king is a good day, multiple kings is even better! The limit in this specific spot is 4 per person per day any size - the limit in this area is generous because the fish tend to be a hatchery run. We've seen a lot of restriction on the traditional early spring king salmon season to help support the runs of wild fish returning to spawn. Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Why don't you just shut the motor off and drift with the tide. It's not like it's rough or the boats moving alot.
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac Жыл бұрын
Hi William thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this salmon action! The reason I use the kicker to keep the boat in position is because if all of the variables were left up to chance, it would almost certainly cause a problematic situation that would reduce my chance of a successful landing. The tide is moving which creates a certain current flow at this spot, the wind is blowing which pushes the boat towards a certain course, the fish is running in every direction, other boats are trolling nearby, crab pot buoys are present and must be avoided, etc... Plus, keeping the kicker on in forward (even a little bit) creates a constant "pull" that helps avoid a slacked line when the fish runs towards the boat. A more constant (less erratic) fight tends to lead to more fish landed. Does this make sense? Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

I love your videos. For the love of god plant the rod butt on your left hip, or a few inches lower and grab the rod 4 inches above your reel and that will give you the leverage you need at the net. Check my videos, once I did that, it’s soooooo much easier
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! Yes indeed - netting a king salmon is always a bit tricky, especially when doing it by yourself! Since I have 10' 6" trolling rods, I find that I get the most leverage and have the most maneuverability when I grip the rod mid-way up as I attempt to scoop the fish into the net. With this approach, the fish gets much closer to the boat thus is MUCH easier to net with one hand (you'd be amazed at the strength it takes to hold a net with one hand and net a fish that is 6 or more feet away!). Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac
