This version of Scarlet -} Fire from the Horton Field House at Univ. of Illinois is often compared to the versions from 2/5/78 and 5/8/77. The band is ON from the start. A controlling presence right from the beginning, Phil slides his bass into Scarlet. The whole group is in complete sync interacting with each other at what seems to be a higher level. Garcia solos long and fluently before handing the introduction of the transition jam over to Donna. Stepping back in, with Phil hot on his heels, he fashions a lengthy dreamy jam that gradually and effortlessly transmutes into Fire.
The drummers get locked in and the groove gets thick as Garcia turns the Mutron waaaaay up to a rude and obscenely high level (in a good way). Not to be outdone, Bobby showcases his recently learned slide guitar skills. I've heard some people say that Bobby's slide work here sounds like seagulls being strangled but this is actually some of my favorite guitar work from Bobby! Garcia is so into it that before the final ascent in Fire, he ad libs "Let it burn, let it burn, let it burn." It may be the only time that he ever did that. Hearing such inspired music from this band sends chills up and down your spine.

I won't say it isn't but I can't say it is. Though I've long loved this one. I can say Scarlet>Fire is one of their best creations that was made new so many times. One of my least favorite ones is the final one in 95. They never even finished it

I've always thought this show blows Cornell out of the water.. We've used it for a couple of dances and this Fire at arena-levels of sound is AMAZING. it does something to your spirit...

Agreed this is one of, if not my favorite show. The music never stopped from this show is absolutely amazing as well. Really dig a good 78 show. Cornell Is overrated and may not of even happened lol. Read up on the conspiracy theory if you havn't yet. Glad to find someone that feels this way about this show vs cornell as I do though

Perhaps my favorite version of Scarlet->Fire. The jam between the two songs is great, the band in top form, lots of spontaneous peaks occurring. Jerry before the heroin was incredible!

I'll take the 5/13/77, Chicago Auditorium, Scarlet-Fire over the 5/8/77 Scarlet-Fire any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Way more energy, way tighter. The way Phil leads the transition between the two tunes is so powerful and unique.

Cornell is a great show but just gets its dick rode soo hard I can't dig it as much as other unknown gems anymore. Anyone that knows barely anything about the band can try to sound knowledgeable throwing out the cornell as a favorite show, This show is top 2 shows for me. The music never stopped as well is amazing. Love jerry on FOTM "LET IT BURN" 78 had a lot of great shows. Close encounters etc Cornell is just the go to for those that want to sound knowledgeable plus as many have speculated it never really took place. Read the theories lol
