I’m 23, born a year or so after Jerry died. I grew up on classic rock, but only got into the dead over the past two years. The feelings they give are almost indescribable, but if you’re here I’m sure I don’t need to explain that to you. I put this music on and watch these guys and I just weep in pure joy and amazement. Whose with me?

Only 12,000 capacity, best acoustics of any indoor venue I've been to, and by then Hampton Coliseum was the last general admission venue the Dead played on the East coast. They loved playing Hampton, and Hampton loved hosting them. I recall trying to find a hotel for me and my friends. So amazing the energy between the crowd and the band. Every time the crowd erupted the boys just turned up the juice even more. It felt like a volcano was just about to blow! This rivals 5/8/77, but it’s like they’ve matured and truly mastered what they do. It’s true, we are incredibly lucky to have access to so many shows, so much has been recorded on apps like Relisten. We could listen for the rest of our lives(and I will) and still you won’t hear the same Jerry solos no matter how hard you try. How TF did he do it?

I feel your paiin brother. Nights like this one when Jerry was feeling ît and the band brought there A game was why I toured from 1976 -80, then caught as many as possible till 1990. You never knew when the magic was gonna happen. There are no words to explain how much I miss those days. R.I.P. Jerry and Robert, your still making my days a lil brighter.

@David Lowny Yes. They were putting up one hit wonder videos of the shows and it was SO ANNOYING! Now they're putting up sets but obscure sets - by that I mean they are going back to '88 shows, from '85 and '89, some '91, but they were doing sets like this, FIRE O T MT., MIGHT AS WELL, BLACK PETER (BLACK PETER WAS ASS TRIPPED OUT) Man, they were so good on the East Coast shows. I really appreciate these uploads⚡⚡⚡

Wen I was in my early 20's in the late 80s and the dead would come to New York and play 5 shows at the garden and 5 more at the meadowlands and my friends and I would see a bunch of shows, the experience was beyond awesome. Somehow this group inspired a culture of community that cant be reproduced. A lot of great jam bands out there but I dont think anyone can replace the dead for the culture they created.

I drove out from Colorado for the 1988 Spring Tour. For Hampton I ended up waiting all night on the walkway leading up to the front doors.. My best friends came down from Massachusetts. I spent a good chunk of time talking with the police, waiting with us as the line moved. They were easy going and truly the best. When I got to the door, neither my equipment(or myself) were so much as jostled. And thats pretty much how it went for the entire tour. And the proof is in the pudding.

Weir is no question the BEST rhythm guitar ever. I mean ever. His style and ear and ability to add so much life and depth and volume gives me chills. Please don’t hate me for saying sometimes I find myself completely fixated on Bobby until Jerry hits some sparkling accidental on a run and I snap back into the groove again. Great show.
@mb195120025 жыл бұрын
Weir is underated as an axe man, I too,have watched his fingers and listened to his fusion style chords. He really makes a great support for Jerry to play over ! Jerry wouldn't be able to get away with those space jams without Bobby complimenting his notes. Weir is great ! Of course it goes without saying, Jerry is the man !! His leads are more complicated than appears at 1st ! Then Phil goes off and WoW ! No other bassman plays like that !
@DennisCampbell7775 жыл бұрын
You do realize he was almost booted out in the sixties for his inferior guitar playing. He worked his ass off at improving his chops and found his place in the mix. It was really close, he was almost shit canned. I think it was 68.
@patrickincharlestonsc49355 жыл бұрын
Dennis Campbell until I watched The Other One, I hadn’t given Bobby his full respect. I’m young in age, 38. My mother turned me onto the Dead when I was 6. Have played percussion since 4, from pots and pans to DCI and a major label touring band in years past; I just missed for years what and why he was so impactful and integral. Once I singled him out in my ear, his sorcery made complete sense.
@mb195120025 жыл бұрын
@@DennisCampbell777 Yes I,ve heard about Bob's possible dismissal, early on. Apparently he changed his style to be in the band. Good for him ,and the band. He is also a good singer as well as writer. As I said before, Bob really supports Jerry's leads ,especially when they seem to fall apart and then bang! they're back on it again. 1st time saw them was at the Fillmore East, NYC.(70/71) They played for about 4 hours! Acoustic, electric, feedback-space, pedal steel,etc. Of course it ended with " And we bid you good-nite" WOW !

I was at that show and it rocks as hard here as I remembered it. It builds kind of steadily but by the time they get to Fire, Garcia is rocking his ass off. Jerry always rocked a little bit harder for the VA tribe. The Hampton and Richmond shows in the 80's just rocked like this all the time.
