We are first generation ranchers figuring it out as we go. We are attempting to become self-sustaining for our feed requirements. We have a cow / calf herd and also background feeder cattle during the winter. This year we planted 20 acres of dry land corn. We don't have traditional silage equipment but we do have a silage baler and a bale wrapper that we have used to put up other forages for wrapped fermented silage bales. We used our equipment this year to experiment with corn silage. Where we live corn silage is not a widely used feed stuff. We made a lot of mistakes but we also made a lot of bales! Experience has been a great teacher. We are still learning and are happy to share our experiences. You never know if you don't try.
