Thoroughly enjoyed watching the set up process! Loved the notes about what you learned and what you would have done differently, sand first, some water then rocks, then more water. Also, the big crab you released was hilarious, playing dead all the way to the ocean floor. Thanks for your content, Simon!

Thanks Sherry! Biggest take away for me is probably that planning before doing is a very good idea, hehe... Yeah, I'm was wondering if something was wrong with that one until it finally "landed".. A crab big on drama! 😄 You're very welcome! Glad you're enjoying it!

Looks great! 4 degrees without supplemented cooling sounds amazing! I've never really been below 12 degrees i my tanks. The sandbed looks cool, that could be an awesome habitat for a lot of smaller critters. I've kept green crabs a few times and would not really recommend them. They are hardy, active och do some really cool behavior. But they are super aggressive, grows quickly, can capture and kill most fish and they are true escape artist. They will not stay for long in an open tank. The only one I kept for more than a month I had a fully sealing coverglass with a 1 kg rock on top.

Thanks! Yeah, my basement is pretty ideal for this. I've had down to 4C during winter, and up to 18C during summer in my tanks there, which is almost identical to the surface temp around here. Only problem is, the temp in the room is the same, so it's not really a comfortable environment for me to sit and enjoy the tanks during winter, hehe.. Yeah, I'm hoping there will be a lot of different tiny critters living in the sand. Hopefully I can see some of it up against the glass. I suspected as much about the green crabs tbh... I'm sure it would probably be best for it to have a tank of its own if one was to keep a bigger one.. I did not think they were that good at escaping though, hehe..

fantastic project. Can't wait to see what you put in it, and what develops. I'm sure you'll find some interesting invertebrates in a few months time. Hopefully one of the burrowing creatures will come up near the glass so you can see them. Some polychaete worms would be cool.

Thanks! I'm quite excited about the first couple of creatures tbh, hehe. I hope so! I'll be adding whatever I can find of small critters for the sand, but yeah, there should be some interesting stuff appearing by itself eventually for sure! Can't wait to see what that will be!

@@ColdwaterTanks A little disappointing Simon, in that, though I found many lovely animals, the only ones I kept as suitable were two prawns which greatly impressed me with their colouration, and of course some trial seaweed. I will return however as I'm certain that more will turn up as spring hastens on. There were hundreds of squat lobsters of all sizes, Topknots, Butterfish, Cornish Suckers, Worm pipefish, 3 Bearded Rockling, Painted Topshells, Snakelocks Anemone, Red Speckled Anemone, Blenny's. One Topknot was a good 10 cm's a handsome beast. I took some video of the location when I get a chance to shoot some video I'll post. Busy in the Garden at the moment. My friends boat goes in next month, and I might get a chance to try some trapping.

@@barleyarrish Oh, That sounds like such an awesome bunch of critters though!! Not everything cool is a good fit for a tank though, I know that, hehe.. Sounds like a spot with a lot of potential at least, with that much life even this early. Beaches/rockpools tend to be somewhat dull and "lifeless" during winter in my area.. No rush! Is it nice enough to do outside gardening over there already? Here there's basically a snowstorm raging outside atm... Going to be well into the negative degrees here next week, even on the coast.... What are you going to be trapping for btw?
@barleyarrish
@barleyarrish Жыл бұрын
@@ColdwaterTanks I would really love to trap some leach's Spider Crab as they tend to live under and amongst the tentacles of Snakelocks anemone's, which is dead cool, and that is number one target species. Another thing I would like to try is to put a suitable rock down for a couple of months and see what has landed... Perhaps you could give that a try the results might be interesting?

@@barleyarrish That sounds brilliant! Hope you'll find that crabby! Would be great in you'd tank I imagine! That sounds like an interesting idea. Just put it in the water, and take it up once in a while to see the changes! Think I might try that!
