33:30 Right there was the silver lining of the interpreter situation for Shohei. With Ippei out of the way, a wall removed and for the first time in MLB Shohei became just one of the guys. I think not being treated like museum piece that you can approach but not getting too close or touch did a lot for him. He's always been an amazing player, but he looked like a different guy last season and it was so fun to watch.

What a great interview. Thanks for sharing. Can you do more of these with other elite players, from different teams, If possible, please?
@spdodgerАй бұрын
Come on Chris, what do you mean "not every team can do that" in regards to deferred money? According to the CBA, deferred money has to be placed into an escrow/interest-bearing account within 1 1/2 years (July 1) of the season of play in which it was earned--the ENTIRE present-day value of the money. It then collects interest to create the future value to be paid. Teoscar Hernandez is a great example. He signed a 1-year deferred contract that will END UP being $23.5M, but the Dodgers had to put $15M into the escrow account. It isn't an account where the team puts everything on a credit card and pays it later. It allows the teams to get a player for LESS money than they can get on the open market when that player is open to deferrals. If a team can't afford $15M/yr for a player like Teoscar Hernandez, what are they doing owning a team in this league?

What is Jackson Merrill’s price now? What should he be willing to accept in return for not being a free agent at an age only 6 months older than Soto
@josephsong8911Ай бұрын
If my math isn’t wrong it’s a year and 6 months, Merrill started the season at 21, Soto ended his rookie season at age 20. Soto in his rookie season was a better batter than Merrill and was a core part of a World Series winning team (Merrill has a chance too but winning vs the Dodgers and braves year in and year out may be tough).
@johndurrer7869Ай бұрын
@ 5 years from today Merrill will be a free agent. He is currently 21 so that will make him 26 and he would turn 27 in April. Soto is also 26 and turns 27 in October. 6 months difference
@johndurrer7869Ай бұрын
@ The nationals waited a month into the season to call Soto up. Which gave them an extra year of control. The Padres called Merrill up at the start of the year possibly because they wanted him to compete for rookie of the year which would’ve given them an extra first round pick. It will cost them a year of control

The fact that bottom-half payroll teams are rarely in the WS is a feature, not a bug. _They shouldn’t be in the WS_ If those teams were really operating on the knife’s edge of financial ruin, they’d change hands frequently. Curiously, they don’t. Follow the money: it’s as sound a principle for sports journalism as it is for political or economic.
@JumboJuneauАй бұрын
No deferment, considering every other team would have offered it, is just wild. It’s desperation, Cohen’s ego, and general stupidity. It’s just throwing away money when he could have saved millions, and used it on other signees.

I am a traditionalist and I despise the "golden bat" rule. It is gimmicky and when you mess with the game to that extent you end up ruining it.
@cdog311424 күн бұрын
You are complaining about it, Chris. Think of it like a 401k plan. You get a salary and you're deferred a chunk of it for retirement. Maybe if more people do it, you might not have players going broke.
@robbyrob0723Ай бұрын
Golden rule...What if the player was just up and hit a single loading the bases. Could you put a pinch runner in and have the same batter 2x's in a row? Too bizarre for baseball. I'd rather them dump the 3rd strike in the dirt run to 1st base. I hate that!

It’s a ego thing bro. Not to say he’s egotistical, but like being a player at any level will have you feeling like that if your team wins and you weren’t playing. I felt that too when I tore my ACL the year my soccer team won the chip
@loxreadАй бұрын
@johnappleseed3800 I understand sports and competitiveness.. but he starts every interview with that.. it is egotistical.. the dodgers identity this past season was being egoless, next man up.. sucks he was hurt, but so what, he isn't the only big dawg on this team.. be happy and grateful that he had the opportunity to contributed at all.. kershaw is debatably the best pitcher in dodgers history, a historical franchise.. ultra competitive.. yet he's quoted as saying "this is the best feeling in the world".. my two cents..
