Thank you Jim. After desperately trying to adjust the governor, choke, and throttle for about 2 hours i came across your video. I laughed and muttered "no way, not a chance" but sure enough, there was the throttle plate, sitting behind the carb. Screws are nowhere to be found but mystery solved. hahah. Thank you!!!

@@ChrisCalnon well it probably would be a good idea to pull the head and make sure the screws went all the way through into the muffler so it doesn’t damage your piston. Jim

Thanks Jim. My butterfly is fine. I think when I put the carb back together I put it back together wrong and the engine ran wide open. Rebuilt the carb the correct way and now my governor doesn’t throttle down. I’m afraid my governor is toast. 😢

Hi Jim. Love your videos. Always a wealth of information. This tip might be of relevance. On my Snapper Snow Blower with a Tecumseh engine, I had engine speed over-revving and no control of the engine speed with the throttle. I bought a new carb as I noticed a lot of play in the throttle shaft. The new carb did not fix the problem. After a lot of research on the internet, there was one suggestion about gaskets. The new carb came with a carb to intake manifold gasket but I went online and bought a new one along with the intake manifold to block gasket. Putting on the new gaskets fixed the problem. That was last year and this year it is still working perfectly. Just a possible fix for a similar problem.

Hey Jim just found your channel today(7/30/2021) Shish I had found it a year ago when I had the same problem. Thought it was a governor or leaking gasket causing the engine runaway. To it to my trusted mechanic and he found the brass throttle plate jammed inbetween the intake valve and seat.also tell tale signs of the a few had bounced around in the cylinder for awhile. Put on a new head gasket and used carb, and it runs great runs.

That is definitely not a uncommon problem the screw works loose that holds the butterfly to the shaft and typically the butterfly stays somewhere in the carburetor but it sucks the screw into the engine and usually out the exhaust valve into the muffler I’ve had a few viewers with the same issue and I explain to them how to fix it. Jim

I'm glad I found your video. Last weekend while mowing with my R8 Ford riding mower, it dopped the idle down, then died. Upon restarting it, it was full throttle with the throttle lever unresponsive. I was thinking the governor junked up and just stuck. So, after a can of carb cleaner, blowing all the gunk off, no go still full throttle. So off to KZbin for a possible answer. I found your video and off with the air cleaner housing to look down the carb. Sure enough I could see the where the butterfly should be, but gone. After taking the carb off, I found the flapper wedged in the intake tube, but no screws. I looked and could see the back of the valve and no screw's. I'm hoping they blew out the exhaust valve. Question is should I find the screws. When this originally happened, I finished mowing at full throttle for about 30 min. I'm thinking it blew them out, hopefully. Motor sound fine. So. should I start hunting for the screws. I don't know if the muffler will come off without destroying it.

Hey Jim, good Information. I have a briggs vangaurd 16hp twin cylinder on a Simplicity Broadmore lawn tractor. I had an issue with an exhaust valve guide pushing out. Found an interesting fix for that, that I can tell you if you want. Although that doesn't have to do with my issue. I have this all put back together, and when I start the engine it runs on fast speed. So I immediately shut it down. The throttle cable moved the governor "wheel" although the throttle butterfly isn't returning to slow (idle) position. I can move ot manually by moving the lever. Linkage and a spring looks to be hooked up, and connected to the governor lever. It just seems that something is not connected correctly that would return the throttle position to idle. Again the throttle cable works correctly, moving from slow to fast, but something is not allowing the throttle to move to or return to slow. I have looked at parts diagrams on line, but they are not helping much. Any ideas?

‘‘It’s the famous Butterfly Effect.” When your motor goes crazy and won’t stop, it can either run amok through your yard and neighborhoods mowing down all the grass it encounters, if it pops in to gear at full speed, or it can shock the heck out of anyone who grabs the spark plug wire to try to pull it off and stop the mower’s motor (i learned that lesson the hard way), which is a major of ER Admissions for Atrial and Ventricular fibrillation from electrocution; or you can just let mower sit in the yard for months in the place where it was stopped by running into an oak tree, andv the grass still won’t be cut, while the antiquarian grass cutter in the family tries to remember being a teenager who understood these devices and what he knew then they might help. In actuality, nothing happens until the City or HOA notices your yard and they start issuing fines for the months after the yard began to look like an unattended vineyard. Or if you see what’s coming with no fix in sight, report the mower stolen, and throw you hands up in complete surrender and buy a new mower, thereby stimulating the economy in manners never predicted by economists studying these matters. I have a 25 year old Snapper Lawn Tractor, model LT145H38DBV, and after replacing the original carb a year or so ago, it started running wide open as soon as I cut it on, with no ability to slow it down using the throttle lever. Never thought about a lost butterfly, but I have the old carburetor somewhere, extra screws, tubes of Loctite thread sealer in both Red (permanent) and Blue (which can occasionally be adjusted), a copy of the shop manual, a parts list, and most of the tools I need. But best of all, I have your great advice about where to look to address the issue. Below is a helpful tip for you and your viewers, which I discovered by following up on someone’s casual reference to it. THE TIP - Loctite makes many great products, but one of the greatest is a “HY 4070” Hybrid Adhesive, similar to epoxy, and comes in a two part tube and 4 different nozzles that mix the two chemicals together inside a single nozzle, as you push on the tube. To be sure the chemical is completely mixed, Loctite recommends wiping the first two or three inches of the initial output onto a paper plate, or a disposable piece of cardboard, so that the first adhesive applied to the problem area is fully mixed. The last part squeezed onto the plate will be an easy indicator of when the adhesive has hardened. The adhesive is moderately gap-filling, and at room temperature, you should have a permanent bond within 5 minutes, but certainly with in 7 minutes - the hotter the environment, the quicker it works. I use n-Heptane (rubber cement solvent) as a quick drying primer I’ve tried a lot of adhesives and epoxies. I won’t say that it is stronger or better than my old stand-by, the original J-B Weld, but HY 4070 fully sets in 5 to 7 minutes instead of 5 to 7 days for maximum strength. Because the nozzles mix a fair amount of chemicals to make the active adhesive, either plan your projects ahead of time so that you can do several in a row, before the chemicals dry up, or buy extra nozzles when you buy the Hybrid Adhesive. The brand name and product name are LOCTITE HY 4070. On Amazon a regular 11 Gram tube costs about $18.19 including 4 mixing nozzles, and 5 additional nozzles are about $8.80, with free delivery for prime members. Link is below: 10:29 www.amazon.com/Loctite-Hybrid-Adhesive-Clear-Cartridge/dp/B074WZJ44X/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2EHRZF1SM6TQP&keywords=loctite+hy+4070+adhesive&qid=1679760301&sprefix=Loctite+HY+4070%2Caps%2C105&sr=8-2

Hey Jim I have a craftsman lt1000 riding mower. I have since turned it from an ordinary riding mower to a mud/ racing mower. Done plenty of things to it such as lowering and suspension. To make it safer. Anyways I have carb issues since when I start it it will run and and idle super high to where I’m afraid it will explode. But when I put it in gear it idles down and doesn’t ever idle back to that same rpm again. Only when I push in clutch or I am not in gear. I have put and new carb on and this is the issue I get. The old one had a fuel solenoid which stripped out. Thanks I’m not sure you see this but I hope someone does

A lot of people that I talk to tell me that the carburetors on Amazon aren’t much good. They’re probably all made in China and if you get one that does work properly, it won’t work for long, you’re probably better off to take it somewhere and have them rebuild the carburetor.

The governor arm should be able to move when the machine is not running how much movement I’m not sure, but I did have a machine once that the shaft coming out of the engine was froze up in the bushing, if you take the air breather off of your carburetor with it, not choked. You should be able to look through the carburetor with the flashlight and see if the butterfly is in place or not. Jim

I think just for safety sake I would pull the head off and see if any parts are stuck in the top of the piston or the bottom of the head that could come loose and cause serious damage down the road chances are if it’s a screw they’re small enough they typically pass through the exhaust valve and you’ll find them rattling around inside your muffler but if you’ve got part of the shaft missing that could cause some serious damage to the engine but if the engine still running you may be OK but I think I would pull the head off just to be sure and as long as you got it off it would be a good time to clean all the carbon deposits off of the top of the piston and the head it will make it start easier, Let me know what you find out and you should be able to find the parts for the carburetor that you’ve lost from a Ace Hardware I’m sure they can order them for you. First I have to ask you where are you bought the carburetor if you got it from Amazon and it’s not a OEM carburetor 75% of the carburetors from Amazon are junk and they don’t work, I would have to say get it up on a bench or get down on the ground take the airbox off of the carburetor so you can see the butterflies and make sure they’re working properly make sure the choke isn’t stuck closed and make sure the intake butterfly is moving properly if they are then I’d have to say it’s probably something internal in the carburetor, without having it in front of me it’s kind of hard to give you a definite exact answer. I swear to God I pull this customers carburetor and the butterfly screw is gone I'm going to be upset. Now he did play mechanic on it and screwed the governor up. So I got the governor where the shaft wasn't playing back and forth and of course with resistance up against the gear but my suspicion is it threw the weights off the governor so it's going to run side open now and there isn't anything I can do about it with cracking the motor open now being I suspect he has thrown the governor weight why not see if he sucked the butterfly screw into the motor😂 Ive already seen the throttle butterfly working in the back but maybe it's just in it's slot with no screw. Either way I'm a tad upset having to track down someone else's screwed up work only to find they've basically killed it 😭

Hi, So I have an old yardman snow bird with tecumseh engine, now it's around 50 years old, bought it used of course lol, So it revs very high, took it to a small engines place and he couldn't fix it, so I finally removed the carburetor and replaced with a new one and seems to still rev very high,. And know online says there's 2 screws on the carb that you can ajust but there both almost out all the way and thts how it came, they say the more out the screw, the less should rev. Any thoughts or tips? Thanks

Wish I could see a picture of the carburetor but typically the high speed jet is inside of the nut that holds on the float bowl on the bottom of the carburetor the low speed jet is typically on the side of the carburetor facing away from the engine, typically you screw both jets all the way in and back them out one and a half turns the engine should start then to adjust the jets you use your throttle cable and slow the engine all the way down and screw the slow speed jet in 1/4 of a turn at a time give the engine time to catch up to the adjustment once the engine starts missing back to screw out a quarter return. To adjust a high speed jet use your throttle and speedy engine up full speed and adjust the high speed jet the same way turn it either in or out until it starts missing and then adjust a quarter turn back Let me know how it’s doing. I have the same issue this my tiller that has a 195 cubic inch Tecumseh motor. When I started up it revs weiwei high in the only way I can fill it down is to pull back on the governor rod. I've tried adjusting pitch on the rod. I've bent the plate bolts on the front of the carburetor mounting bolt towards the governor. My linkage is all correct. OK I had an older Tecumseh engine and I opened it up if I can figure out how I’ll send you pictures but it is a mechanical Governor it’s similar to the Briggs & Stratton.‘s as it spins it throws some weight salt and that’s what controls the RPMs it runs off the small gear that’s on your crankshaft the same gear the cam uses for timing once you open it up and look at it you’ll be able to tell if it’s still in one piece or if it’s broken and not working properly. If it is your governor inside your engine you’ll have to turn the engine upside down and take the bottom off of it you will need a new sump gasket and probably a new lip seal that goes around the crank on the bottom of the engine once you get the sump off you will see the Governor they’re usually a half white colored plastic gear with some weights on it the gear may have broke or lost the weights and that’s why it’s not slowing down the engine. If you have or know of someone that has a endoscope you can push it in the drain hole on the engine and you may be able to see the governor or you might be able to see the parts laying in the bottom of the sump before you tip the engine upside down. I wondered if I could try to get the linkage in a somewhat a happy medium and try to run it. But now even after I cleaned the carb and tried starter fluid its not starting.(there is spark) My 2 questions are is the throttle governor butterfly in a cold starting attempt suppose to be closed like the choke one or open? Second question is me trying to adjust the stuck governor in a fixed position effect the starting, or lack of starting? thanks John Sorry thought of a third if i disconnect the linkage to the governor to the carb can I try and start it that way?

OK I found a KZbin video that explains the different parts of your air compressor and you can also see what he’s talking about which should make it easier than just this email. It’s called air compressor parts.com and they also sell the parts that you’re going to need, the first thing you’re gonna wanna check is your pilot unloader valve that’s probably what’s making your engine not cut back in and make more air. Do you wanna check your check valve on your tank make sure it’s unloading the pressure between the tank and the pump head and some models have a air volume control valve mounted on the engine, hooked to the governor, I don’t know what parts your machine has because I’ve never worked on one of those and I’m not sure if you ever said the brand name but check out his website. I tried to share it and send it to you but I keep coming up with a notation that’s telling me you’re email address isn’t available that’s what I’m using it at the top of your email. I’ll keep trying to figure out if I can send it to you if I can’t Google the name and you should be able to find it. Let me know what’s going on. Jim.
