Finally; a laymans explanation and video depicting the operation of what seems a complex system. So much so, I took a small motorbike engine apart and reasembled it completely and for the first time, KNEW what every little piece did, as this was the last piece of the puzzle.. Well done for a brilliant and simple explanation.

Thank you so much for the time you took to make this visual representation of how a governor works. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this concept for awhile now and just could completely grasp exactly what was happening within all the components to make it function. Thanks to your breakdown of the system and it’s components. I can now visualize how each one connects to the next, I finally feel confident in my understanding of this system. Thank you again for taking the time and effort to make this video, and for sharing your knowledge!!

Perfect example. Im so glad I found your video. I looked for a few days with no luck and then utube put this one in my feed. I had backwards on my motor. I cranked it up and I've NEVER heard a little motor rev that high!! I killed it fast and back to the drwwing board. Origanly all was wrong was the head gasket letting pressure past my push rods and into the crank case pushing oil up over my rings. So thanks again for your time making this video!!

Thank you for the video and the explanation.I had a problem with my craftsman model 917.388831 with a briggs and straton engine, engine model 10L902-0469-E1 and the problem was that the lawnmower slowed down when I started to mow the grass up until the point that it would not run so I removed the top cover and removed the air filter (filter was dirty) And I found that a spring that was supposed to be connected to the carburetor butterfly valve had broken off. I found a spring that I had laying around and installed it ( it was not the proper spring but is was a small spring ) I started the lawn mower and it went to full throttle and it stayed like that, it would not go to idle.Is the reason that it went to full throttle because it has the wrong spring? I am going to buy the correct spring for the carburetor and hope that it cures the problem. And if it does not then I am thinking that it might be missing another spring or springs.Any advice will be greatly appreciated.Cheers

A big 'Thanks" It is a great hobby to work on these engines, and to know how all the parts work together. I did not get it as first but knowing how a centrifugal clutch works, except there the weights are held in due to the spring on the governor outside the engine. engine not running, throttle is wide open. engine starts weights spread out, but spring tension regulates how much balance. If spring tension is very tight, engine will run very fast, with a looser spring and gov arm able to move, better control of the throttle My model 23 has the updraft carb and mechanical governor with a threaded rod. .

@1:28 that rod with a spring around it , normally there would be no spring ... unless the rod connected to the governor arm is loose , therefore a spring is needed. If kept loose , you will face engine surging which is when the engine changes speed when it encounters different loads.

King County They all come factory with the spring, it keeps the linkage tight, your right, they will lope/surge if its not, not all the time, but when they do and the governor is adjusted right thats usually the problem. Thanks for Watching!!!

fnaguitarplayer9 Thanks for approving my knowledge , I guess my schooling is well paid for ... but I have 1 question off topic cause I cant find anywhere that has to do with what ima ask .. well im reading about carburetor inspecting and I came across a part where it said , "Place a metal block on the carburetor body under the throttle-plate shaft. Use a feeler gage to measure the distance between the shaft and the block first when pressing down on the shaft and then when pulling up on the shaft " my question is , how big is the block suppose to be??????
@fnaguitarplayer99 жыл бұрын
King County I hear ya! Hmm, i'm not really sure on that, unless they mean just anything (like a piece of 1/8" flat stock) or something just to reference the micrometer (or caliper) to. Kind of like how you weight your self holding something, then without and subtract the 2, just like a filler to give a solid reference i guess.

Runs fine without the mower engaged, but surges when it's engaged - even backfires out the exhaust. Is that a governor problem or a carburetor problem? I've cleaned the carb twice, but ... Haven't been able to get the nozzle out. I think the threads are galled. Anyway, just wondering.
@fnaguitarplayer98 жыл бұрын
Appreciate that! Glad to help out! Honestly it could be either, or both, i'd say try adjusting the governor first and see what it does, if not, then you may need to get a kit for the carb. Hopefully you will be able to get the nozzle out, that may be the problem (sounds like it may be running to lean = less power). Hope this helps! Thanks for Watching!!!

Good vid, I get it now, outside heavy spring puts tension on governor shaft which goes thru block, so there is pressure on shaft that moves out as weights spread out. I have the exact same engine and I’m having a problem with surging, the linkage from the carburetor all the way to the governor keeps going back-and-forth back-and-forth surging, it only does it at high-speed not a Idle, I thought it was the carburetor at first and I got a rebuild kit from Briggs and Stratton and rebuilt the carburetor, after rebuilding the carburetor it still does the same thing, I adjusted the governor by loosening the Lock nut and sticking a screwdriver in the slot turning it to the right and tightening the locknut on the governor arm, I started the motor and it still surges with the linkage going back-and-forth back-and-forth, I even replaced the little tiny spring that runs on the outside of the linkage arm going to the carburetor, even after replacing the little linkage spring, rebuilding the carburetor and adjusting the governor arm I can’t figure out why it is still surging, I also adjusted the carburetor screws in every possible different combination and it still surges, I have not opened up the motor and checked out the oil spinner/thrower like you did yet and was hoping it wasn’t necessary to figure this out, any ideas??? Thanks!

FNA Guitar Player, Thanks for the great video. I am embarrassed to say that a toothpick fell into the Kohler riding mower engine while I was changing the oil (long story). I am trying to visualize if this could possibly be a problem. The toothpick is standard size of 2 inches and made of bamboo. The only place where I see it might get stuck is behind the pin that holds the weights. And even if the rod slowed or locked, then it seems it would not affect the gear. The only thing that might happen is the throttle locks at one speed. Any thoughts or insight? Thanks.

Love your videos sir, and that southern accent makes me miss my almost 20 years of life in TN. I have a Leaf Vac with a Briggs Intek 875 engine. Inherited from grandpa in north Michigan. Engine was hydro locked and I have been able to fix it, ne oil, filter plug and it is now running but only on high. Looks like it's all connected properly to the carb. Is there anything else besides a stuck butterfly valve that would make just run on rabbit speed? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

what if suddenly your mower runs at insane idle speed? broken governor? used to work fine now it screams and cannot adjust with carb screws.

Sounds like a broken linkage or broken governor spring. Thanks for Watching!!!

For starters excellent video. Neighbor has a mini bike that lost the linkage with spring around it that goes from carb to governor linkage and used a wire in place of it. Is this good, bad or will it cause any issues w running or power??? I appreciate your input and knowledge if possible Sir. Thank you for your time.

There is a spacer washer at the bottom that acts as a bearing surface but there is a clip type piece that holds it all together it just kind of presses on. Thanks for Watching!!!
