If Tess was an only child, she would have every right to customize her mother's dress, but the fact that there was a complete disregard for her OLDER sister is the knife in the back.
@TheRealDeal92

Very true about a knife in the back. I know if I was an only child, I would wear my mother’s dress no matter what. I would maybe do one or two alternations, nothing major but keep it the way it is because of it being my mother’s dress. Tess would never officially wear her mother’s dress, all because it was old fashion. That is one of the saddest parts about Tess in this scene.
@yogalover2753

It would have been wrong regardless of whether she was an only child or not, one or two minor altercations would have been ok ( if Jane is ok with it which I'm sure she would have been ok with just two minor altercations) but Tess went overboard on it. This isn't just about the fact that there was disregard for Jane but she should have thought about how their mother would have felt if she knew what Tess did. Yes I know that their mother is dead but still.

@Imma Savage stop! It doesn’t matter if Jane knew or that Tess didn’t. The fact of the matter is that dress is not just a fabric but represents one of the most happiest time of their mother’s. The moment she married the love of her life- their father! This was THEIR memory not to be cut up in pieces to be used as an accessory. That is not what their parents love was about. But Tess is too selfish and narcissistic - which is why she doesn’t truly love George but sees him as an accessory to her lifestyle.

I think it makes the villain (Tess) a round character. You know some people in real life are self-centered and have no qualms about lying about themselves but it's also motivated by insecurities and fears, the same exact things Jane the protagonist deals with. It makes for a nice character arc for Tess to also realize things for herself because it means Jane's example of how she finally took control over her own life makes an impact on others.

She’d been taking advantage of Jane’s kindness throughout the entire movie, and this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

@@EboniKing-m1l yeah literally, but it’s still the fact that she knew that jane cared deeply for the dress no matter how it looked so it was really a big betrayal especially since it was her own sister. and then she didn’t tell jane that she was altering the dress too, especially since she told jane when she was first given the dress that she could wear it afterwards. so that does kind of cross out tessa personality in the dress part. since they don’t talk about it in the movie (i’m binging it right now) i’m assuming that maybe they talked about sharing the dress in the past.

One thing that really hits me about the dress is that Tess only took like two tiny pieces of the original dress and left the rest of it in pieces. That's what I don't get. People don't understand that Tess took two tiny pieces from a fully functional dress and created an entire stupid excuse of it being old fashioned. Tess didn't have to cut up the entire dress to get those two pieces. That narcissist did it on purpose. When I saw Jane's face my heart sank, worst when her sister made it clear the pieces she used. Like bruh, how dare you tell your sister that you didn't leave a dress but some pieces of the wedding dress for her. Selina Maturino They are both pretty close. But as a personal matter for Jane was the dress compared to George. She wanted to wear her mother’s dress for as long as she could remember, then Tess goes to have it all cut up just because it was so old fashion. As for George, she cares for him very much that she will tell him the truth about her own sister, causing them to break up and to cancel the wedding, etc. They are both pretty close but the dress tops it off because of how personal it was.

What makes this more selfish and heartless is the fact that Tess KNEW Jane wanted to wear their moms dress on her wedding day, but went and cut it up without asking or letting her know anyways. Back when they first brought the dress out, Tess asked, “it’s okay right? I mean I know you wanted to wear this, but I’m getting married first so...” then she only used freaking SCRAPS of it! Just buy a whole new dress if your gonna do that! She did that on the casino too (place of the wedding) instead of asking what Jane thought, she just flat out tells her, “yep! I’m doing it here now! That’s okay right? I mean I know you wanted to, but I already rented it out, so you can’t really say anything...” The fact that Tess knew all of these things means, Jane probably talked about it a lot as a kid to her, and was obviously much closer to their mom since she died while Tess was just a little kid, so it was much more meaningful to Jane..... And then she just freaking cuts it up!!😡

I could never believe that Tess truly loved George. She only saw him as an accessory to her lifestyle. Similar to how she cut up her mother’s wedding dress to accessorize her own. She sees people and things she can cut up and use. Like what she does to her dad, sister, the boy and everyone around her. She was narcissist and selfish. I don’t think Jane groveled, but people like Tess are insecure…and even greedy, maybe even desperate. Tess’s life may have looked perfect because she’s gorgeous and popular with the guys. But her life didn’t turn out the way she wanted and had to come back home. Then George seemed like a genuine person, someone way different compared to the other guys she have dated in the past is my guess. It was very wrong of her to lie to George to keep him (more work for her btw), and she completely destroyed mom’s wedding dress knowing that Jane wanted more than anything to wear it on her own wedding day in memory of her and to somehow include her on her special day. This never will justify what Tess did…but Tess wanted to be someone George respected. She somehow knew deep down the kind of girl a guy like George would want and she wanted to be that for him, even if it meant she had to lie

The horror and realisation on Jane’s face really made the scene. And Tess showed no remorse or regret after cutting up their mother’s dress. Bit of a story to share: My mother borrowed her cousin’s wedding dress for her big day back in the 80’s. She wore it as a maternity bridal gown as she was expecting my sister. We stored it away in our loft and now that her cousin’s daughter is getting married this year, we’ve returned her mother’s dress to her to do as she wishes with it. As I will be getting married one day, I couldn’t bear to have cut up what didn’t rightfully belong to me or my mother in the first place 🤍

Why would Jane’s sister Tess destroy there mom’s wedding dress? Can see Jane is heartbroken when Tess cutoff her mom’s dress. That’s a very old dress, it’s beautiful 😢

She did it because she's selfish and didn't care that Jane wanted to wear the dress. She should have just bought a completely different dress if she was going to do that.

What a great movie. Makes me grateful 1. I have an older brother and 2. My mom got married in a sweater and jeans 😂

Why even "wear" your moms dress if you're really not going to.

This scene was pretty hard to watch. As a man I've somewhat come to understand how meaningful a wedding dress is, especially when it is passed down from mother to daughter which in a way a sacred family tradition. Tess was extremely selfish and didn't care about anyone but herself.

Tess, is everything wrong with the millennial generation, starting the "Wedding Dress Redesign" trend. What's the point of even choosing to wear an old dress?

She should have cut off Tess's hair to see how she liked it (having something that you treasure cut up)
