We just got back from Portugal for a 2-weeks sisters trip. We spent 4 nights in Porto, 6 nights in Lisbon, 3 nights and Evora. I totally agreed with you about spending more rather spent more time in Porto. I love this place. The hilly walking (we didn’t not spend a dollar on public transportation as we were just spending time with historical area. Loved the foods. People… extremely friendly and honest. Don’t forget to eat some roasted chestnut. The book store: we spent €15/person ticket and got a book. Read it during my flight back to the US. I would love to come back to Porto again in the future.

Another very good video! We lived in Lisbon for 1.5 years before moving to Braga in November 2023. We spent a week in Porto on vacation a couple of years ago, and now are less than an hour by train from Porto. Now that we're done with moving, and the weather is improving, we hope to make more regular visits to Porto, because it is a stunning city in so many ways. The time of year you visit will have a big impact. Looks like you were there in (I'm guessing) December? During the warmer months, Porto really shines. I would get a metro/public transport pass, and use it, especially when the weather is nice. Easy to get to the beach, and there's some great beach bars an easy bus ride from city center. Matosinhos has some great sea food places, and is worth some time, too. For us, we absolutely LOVED our time in Lisbon. The more I got to know that city, the more I liked it (apart from housing prices). And I think that applies to either city; the first couple of days you need time to adjust and learn your way around a bit. But, the more you settle in, the better it gets. I think people who start in Lisbon and finish in Porto may wind up liking Porto more because they are more comfortable being in Portugal, and might have some more confidence to try more things. I think both cities are fantastic, and two of my 3 favorite cities of all time (shout out to Glasgow Scotland!). All 3 have a lot in common. All are a bit "gritty" with some rough edges, but massively fun and interesting, great people, and only get better the more you get to know each city. I can't wait to spend more time in Porto now :)

It’s a dish from Porto and it’s kind of a big toasti/croque madame, it’s a calorie bomb but a must try. Also: if you have the time, please visit Braga. It’s a beautiful city that is just a short train ride away from Porto. Some wonderful sites you should visit: walk from the station to the Arco da Porta Nova, the Santa Bárbara garden, Palácio do Raio and then Bolt/Uber to Bom Jesus staircases and walk up the stairs. It’s a beautiful view up there and the sanctuary is just amazing. A nice reward after the climb 😏

I am trying to choose between Lisbon and Porto. Making an itinerary to see which is best. A plus is that one can take guided tours from Porto to the national park, Santiago de Compostela ( in Spain), Braga + Guimarães and the Douro Valley. In that case its a plus that Porto is small and not overflooded with tourists spots such that one has a nice base from which to see the places mentioned. I will save your video in case i move forward with Porto so thanks for your effort :)

Why? No tourist wants to fall for a tourist trap. Everybody hates them locals and tourists alike
@t.c.432127 күн бұрын
The thing is, the issue isn't some people from elsewhere in the world trying to experience the local culture (when tourists comprise of 50% or less of foot traffic at a museum, town center, etc). The hipsters like to criticize these people, which is why they are hipsters, because they want to look cool. The truth is these tourists help the local economy and often engage with the local community. The real issue is the mindless hoardes of emotionless philistines who trample and plod around going through the motions, rendering a unique place into a globalized disneyland, a parody of its former self. Also pricing out the locals in the worst cases. These tourists might as well be at there local air conditionned mega mall in whatever megacity they reside in.

Whilst I am biased because I am from Lisbon, I love Porto and I go there as often as I can. It it a 3hish voyage from Lisbon by train. However, having seen the video about Lisbon, I feel that a lot of the best in Lisbon was not talked about. Pastéis de Nata are traditional and were invented in Lisbon, not in Porto, and the best ones are the traditional ones, from Lisbon. Also, pastéis de Belém (only sold at the original shop in Belém, again, in Lisbon) do not have the same recipe as all the other shops which sell pastéis de nata, although they look the same. The whole area of Belém was not mentioned! It has one of the most important monastaries in Portugal and in the history of Europe, it has the most important fort in Lisbon, and some of the best cultural part of Lisbon is also located there. It has also some of the most traditional and typical streets in Lisbon and houses a congress center... Mouraria was also not mentioned, the casas de fado were not mentioned, the south bank of the river Tagus was not mentioned, Ericeira (which is further away but talking about transportation it is more or less the same time from Lisbon) was not mentioned... and this is only, as someone from Lisbon, what I can pull off by quick thinking...

@@camdendavid Lisbon and Porto are two completely different cities. Porto is more pituresc (probably because it wasn't destroyed by the 1755 earthquake) and Lisbon is more "cosmopolitan". The baixa was completely rebuilt after the earthquake by the most modern architects of the time. Its layout was studied at schools and probably is studied in architect schools... avenida da liberdade is the equivalent to Paris's champs elysees. Built with same purpose. Ponte 25 de Abril was modeled after the san Francisco bridge. Quartel do Carmo, two steps from Chiado, was where one of the few (almost) bloodless revolutions of the world took place, which destryed the dictatorship that rulled Portugal for 40 years. In Porto, torre dos clérigos was left out. S Luís bridge was built by the same guy that built the Eiffel tower... for me these, as a portuguese, these aspects are crucial when talking about the cities and most are in book tourist guides. I liked your videos. I simply think that too much and too important things were left out...

Nao faz falta, acredite.Completamente despropositado o sei comentário...Se vive numa localidade a norte de Lx como pode dizer que o Porto é demasiado pequeno.Pelos vistos vive num sitio ainda menor..Enfim..Fique onde está.

I'm from Porto and I know this beautiful city with my eyes closed. Living now in Florida for the last 20 years...😂

Hello, I am thinking of picking up Porto as my exchange city to study there for one year. Do you think the city has enough to offer throughout the whole academic year? What are the possibilities to spend your leisure time there? :D
@camdendavid6 ай бұрын
Hmmmm, that's a great question. I didn't spend enough time there to be able to answer thoroughly. But from my limited perspective, I'd say it definitely has enough to offer. You'll have easy access to other parts of the country and it's a special culture. What type of environments do you enjoy?

Hey Camden, love your videos! I am planning to travel to Porto & Madeira in the second half of October this year. I fear the weather, shorter day times and things closing soon. Unfortunately that is the only time I can travel. Would you recommend coming to Portugal around that time? or perhaps a different country. I would be traveling from the US. Thanks
@camdendavid7 ай бұрын
I appreciate the support! I hear it rains a fair amount in October but should still be warm enough to enjoy. I guess it really depends on what you're looking for in the trip. You'll likely run into that type of weather no matter where you are in Europe in October. Is there something specific you're hoping to do?
@BilalKhan-rh1ei7 ай бұрын
@@camdendavid Thanks for the reply. I agree weather is out of our control and and it'll be same across Europe. I plan to land in Porto, explore the charming city for 2-3 days and then head to Madeira. We are a young couple so would be doing a lot of hiking, maybe canyoning too there. We will explore Lisbon after that for a few days (including a day in Sintra). Fingers crossed, hoping for an enjoyable weather!

Have you been to Holy Sandwich? If so, what would you say about it?
@camdendavid10 ай бұрын
I have not. Sorry to disappoint haha

@@camdendavid NP. I was asking because I wanted to see if someone with a lot more experience dining in Porto agreed with me. I've only been to Porto once, last year for a about a week. I loved the burger and french fries at Holy Sandwich and am definitely going back on my next trip which is in about 3 weeks.

As a local I must say that although I liked the video e feel like you missed some musts of Porto. I can’t believe that you don’t mention the “Francesinha”it’s on par with “Tripas” the city’s most famous dish. Also, except for the “Conga” and “casa Guedes” most of the places (eat and drink) you recommend, I never heard about
@camdendavid8 ай бұрын
Not trying the Francesinha was my biggest regret! I had eaten soooo much great food and couldn't bring myself to eat a dish as big as the francesinha... what a mistake! I didn't end up mentioning it in the video because I never want to mislead or misinform folks about something I didn't have an experience with. But it's the #1 thing on my list for my next visit! Would love for you to try out some of those other places and let me know what you think :)
