On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will compare the performance of the 270 Win to the 30-06 on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points (winner takes all), for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 50 yards. Steel is A529 grade 55 mild steel. 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Thanks for watching!
Use code "banana10" at checkout for 10 percent off your purchase at WOOX Store.

130 gr Interlock - 3,072 fps Avg
30-06 - 24"

The 30-06 Springfield and the 270 Winchester are nearly identical when using bullets of 150 grains or lighter. The difference is very apparent with heavier bullets and hand loaded rounds. The 30-06 Springfield comes into its own when using 165 grain projectiles and larger, 180 grain, 200 grain, or even 220 grain.

@@2strokeme64 Stands to reason that a larger bullet with the same energy has a better chance of retaining mass and continuing through the target intact. The 270 has somewhat increased ballistic coefficient improving bullet drop/ range and a bit milder recoil though I never fired a 30-06 with a 200gr or larger bullets.

Catch22, me also. I inherited my Grandfather's remmy 760 gamemaster in aught six. Love this thing but once I hit 55 years old it just beats the snot outta me. Soooo I tried an experiment. Replaced the stock with an AR style. Much lighter so I figgered that the recoil would be worse. Not. Felt recoil is less than a third. Follow ups are infinitely faster. As an aught six buff I thought this is a good thing to pass on to others like me whom might be getting on in years and past the "love that recoil" stage. Im plus 60 now and still, STILL hunt the Idaho high ups for elk every year. Lighter rifle lets me walk longer and further but the hardly felt recoil is just the most wonderful thing ever! Good hunting.

Decades ago when 270 and 30-06 were the typical choice for deer. The deciding factor was the environment. The 30-06 was, along with many other 30 calibers, was considered a "Bush Buster" because small branches and twigs wouldn't have much effect on the flight path. The 270 was preferred for open field caliber because of it's flat long distance projectory.

Yet, the new guy has to have the latest and greatest and then find that his corner store doesnt have customers for that round and you have to search to find them. The old standard guns and rounds did well in their day and still dont give up much today. Ive had lotsa odd ball loads and guns and my aiming and stamina count more for game getting than the choice of rounds or different guns ever did. Learn to hunt and track and hide like the injuns and when you are good enough to get within 40ft of an elk or deer or bear or moose,,,then it wont make any difference if your gun has sights or not. I was raised in a 30-06 shooting family, so I was bias for the longest time. Around 2005, I was offered a Browning Medallion in 270 in trade for I don't remember what. I figured I'd sell or trade it because it's a 270. I went to a local gun shop for some ammo. The owner put a 30-06 cartridge in one hand and a 270 in the other. He said close your eyes and tell me which is which....... I mounted a nice Leupold scope, and the rifle shot incredibly well. Two so-called friends made insulting low-ball offers on the rifle, so I kept it as a spare or guest rifle for hunts. My 270 reloads have harvested several deer and hogs over the years. Please remember deer are not 1/2" steel plates. My regular 30-06 is a Leupold scoped (1920) Springfield 1903 sporterized rifle.

So the original .270 load was a 130gr bullet at 3160fps. The ammo manufacturers received complaints about meat damage and had to lower it to 3000 fps. In recent years they’ve upped it a tad but it’s still lacking a 100fps or so (this matters a lot because that’s basically the difference between a 308 and a 30-06). The .30-06 in this video is above factory averages and the .270 is right at factory averages (which is still lower than its initial power). IMO I think the .270 is just the better caliber if loaded correctly. Shoots flatter, penetrates just as much if not more due to higher sectional density and has less recoil. Not a bad test just give the 270 a fair shake. The Barnes LRX factory load is close to the original loading as you can get.
@joshrandall3632

Did he post velocities of each round? Also, the .270 doesn't have a higher SD than the '06. Some bullets certainly do, but that all depends on the particular bullets compared.
@hunterjohnson5635
@hunterjohnson5635 3 ай бұрын
He did in the video description. I will say though, that sectional density has no relation to the bullet type or construction (he used interlocks for each). Sectional Density is essentially the weight of the projectile in relation to its largest width; in this case it is .277” and .308”. I think you might be thinking of B.C. Which does take the design of the bullet into place. Thanks for the comment, brother.

The .30-06 is based on the 7mm Mauser and was developed after the Spanish-American War. This was due to the shortcomings of the .30-40 (.30 caliber, 40 grains black powder equilavent [just like the .30-30] based on the "new smokeless powder") Krag-Jorgenson rifle. The first cartridge in 1903 used a round nose bullet which was changed to a spire point in 1906 for better ballistics. The designation .30-06 equates to .30 caliber of 1906 and was developed for the 1903 Springfield rifle. All derivatives of the .30-06 are in truth developed from the 7mm Mauser. I have a "Spanish Mauser" from the late 1800's, a nice historical artifact.

Good video as always may I suggest whenever you do your steel page paint them white. And when you shoot them with a caliber circle and Mark with the caliber is. And also put a dot on to give you a reference mark as an aiming point😊

I wonder if the Remington 150gr 30-06 Core-lock (lead tip or poly tip) would show the same results. Very interesting video, never thought those results would happen, thank you.

It would be nice to see a comparison between the 150 grain and the 220 grain bullets in the 30-06. The nice thing about the 30-06 is its ability to launch a large variety of bullet weights, anything from a 100-grain Plinker to the 220-grain in a standard twist bore. Some tighter twists can stabilize up to a 250-grain bullet.

LOL fudd lore at its finest. The 06 is not going to and never did penetrate tank armor, and they surely wont bounce around vehicles. Same fudd theory that a .22lr will bounce around inside the body lol.

Some memories shooting the .30-06 from a Remington 7600 with no recoil pad- Affectionately gave it the nickname "Shoulder Buster". Once a friend shot it and didn't think it kicked hard until he discovered it recoiled hard enough that the scope cut his eyebrow open. That was a beautiful gun but a very punishing one on both ends. LOL

Both great rounds , the advantage to the 3.06 is you can load heavier lead. The .270 135&150 grain, the 3.06 load down or up to 185 grain . My .270 is my deer and hog rifle , my 3.06 is my larger game rifle , love them both .

first time visiting, i'm please by the outcome; i've got my dad's old 760 Rem in 30.06, it's killed elk in the past. it's not likely to kill another, at least not this generation; maybe in the next, 30.06 is a great caliber with a lot of variety available in load options.

Cool vid - I was worried .270 would win for some reason. I live in Western Nevada now so .270 makes a bit more sense than .30-06, but I bought my '06 about 30 years ago when I lived in WI. Lots of ways to spend money on guns these days and lots of fun to shoot!

My 270 lost, but I bought it because of a good deal, however, I won’t be hunting for steel plates, though it will kill virtually anything a 30-06 will. I did want a 30-06 though, so I’m defiantly not biased!

Confused. The 270 penetrated on edge, so shot center for NOGO. 3006 goes thru - but then retest 3006? Why not repeat the 270? Also - how close is the 270 to penetrating if it makes a difference if it's hitting on edge or center? Point: I have to think the 270 is VERY close to matching 3006 in this test? Also, not many of us are shooting through steel plates - would be more interesting in ballistic gel? Thanks - still enjoying.

The 30-06 has the advantage of being a military round so more, exotic, rounds are available. I’ve never used the 30-06 before but can personally say that the .270 in 130 grain has taken down ANY game that I have gone after. They are both rounds that deserve the respect.

I own both 30-06, and .270 win. The .270 win. in my opinion is a better hunting cartridge using a 140 grain bullet. The 30-06 Springfield is superior at 165 grain and higher weight bullets, simply because of available case capacity, for powder. The dividing line between the two cartridges lies at a 150 grain range.

I'd like to see the .270 WSM not the 270 but the 270 short mag. I had one, a Tikka bolt action; and, other than the misery of finding ammo was the recoil, that thing kicked so bad I busted a blood vessel when I didn't shoulder it properly. I have a picture of the bruise it created though.

Here’s what’s meaningful, per any bullet weight the .270 will have a higher MOA wind constant and thus the bullet trajectory is ALWAYS less effected by wind and that means better shot placement is assured at mid to long range. Now, since shot placement is the most important thing about everything important to successful hunting, smart hunters will go with the .270 over the 30-06.
