I love these episodes. They are such a tonic and full of wonderful humor.

Another great episode! And very much looking forward to more content about the Dutch Republic!

I grew up in Holland, the “Burgundian” Catholic South, not the “austere” Calvinist North mind you. Cleaning is still important. The first apartment I lived in was in the same house as our landlady. If we didn’t clean our windows every second week, she would unplug our cable television which was routed through her part of the house (oh, it must have fallen out she’d proclaim). Damn 16th century Calvinist busybodies, ruined it for all of us. Now I live in the US and nobody seems to mind if you wash your windows, Liberty indeed!

I'm afraid if you ask for a Dutch Maid in Amsterdam you either get a Minute Maid (drink) or directions to the Red Light District. Fun episode, chaps. I never knew about this part of my history.

That 17th century Calvinist cleanliness in the Netherlands was, in my experience, also widely adopted among what Catholics remained north of the Rhine. Both my parents were born in Catholic Dutch households and housekeeping is such a thing! especially in my mother's family, which hails from the Northern part of North Holland, which one would expect to be very protestant but had a big Catholic community. My Grandmother, mother and aunts, on meeting each other for family gatherings, would almost as a first topic of any conversation report on what chores they had completed in the week preceeding the gathering XD One of the aunts that carpooled with us to such occassions would make the report to my mother during the drive over ;)
