BECO Stump Bucket. Awesome. Kubota B2601 Compact Tractor.
Picked up a new attachment from Farmer Equipment Sales - a Stump Bucket. I mount it to the FEL on my Kubota B2601 compact tractor and head over to Guy's Range to see if it can remove those big maple stumps. This should be interesting. The best thing I ever did was buy a backhoe for my Kubota. For off grid living & surviving its a must. I’ve torn down chimneys, ripped out stumps, dug trenches for water drainage, etc. I can’t imagine life without it. Front loader, backhoe, box blade, fork lifts, garden tiller, & mowing deck are the most important implements for off grid living.

@@GPOutdoors It's an awesome machine. I've used it with a Danuser Intimidator now for six months now pulling hundreds of cedars and mesquites. Losing bolts on the attachment though. Tough terrain, shale/rocks, 3-4' root balls. Haven't tried my utility bucket yet. Hoping it'll be better to digging out the bigger trees. Keep up the great work.

Come on guys, don't give GP a thumbs down because you don't like the product he reviewed. I mean he never says it's the best thing since sliced bread. The B2601 isn't exactly a huge tractor, but an hour on that particular stump wasn't bad. I do think a backhoe would be the better tool for removing stumps, but this is probably thousands cheaper. It would be neat to see how it trenches as that is something I've got to do a lot of next summer.

I got all my trails cleared and then rented E32 BobCat mini excavator for stumps, rocks and some drainage ditches. Well worth the money and time saved.

I think you have honest viewers! Not everybody is in love with that attachment! I think it can serve a good purpose in the landscaping business, like removing shrubs. But removing a maple stump is far from ideal for that tool. This is rather in the domain of the backhoe or even better, an excavator. I am still dreaming of an excavator. It's been two years now I talk to my wife (Minister of Finance) about it... I feel she is softening her position... Wish me luck! Lol! Thanks GP!

GP, you are much better equipped than me in one area: patience! I think it's great that you were able to accomplish that task with your tractor. I don't think you were hurting your tractor as your approach was to take a little at a time and be patient. That tractor is made to handle a little bit of abuse so nice job working at a safe pace to get it done without harm. (Edit) Also, because you don't have the tractor loaded up with a bunch of ballast, I feel that the fact you were easily spinning the tires helps to protect you from doing too much damage. Everyone is commenting about the wear and tear on the tractor and I think that could be an issue if you were using this every day to remove stumps, but a couple a year won't hurt a thing. They're not giving this tractor and its capabilities enough credit. If your tractor is a garage queen that you're afraid to push to the limits now and again than you're missing the point of having a tractor in my opinion!

Have the Kubota L3901 with the backhoe. That sump would of took about 20 minutes to break loose. Looks like a lot of pounding on your equipment but it achieved the desired result. Stay healthy and keep stumping.

Wow,.( in a bad way ) that would wreck the front end of the tractor. I can't help thinking of that constant impacting of the loader frame, in fact all of the tractor. That's a job for an excavator, in my humble opinion! The stump bucket is , in itself, a good idea,..but I can't help thinking of the wear and tear on the tractor. Is my thinking all wrong here,...tell me how then prove it to me. Now having said that,..I think that 'stumpbuckets would be great form shrubs and bushes and I could use one right about now,..but I sure as heck couldn't bring myself to use that for larger tree stumps/root.

I don't think you guys are giving this tractor enough credit. If done responsibly I think you could do several stumps a year like this and not hurt a thing on that tractor. I can see how the stump bucket could be harmful to the tractor if made to do this every day or several times a week, but in this situation at a slow and cautious pace it would be fine. One of my main reasons for saying that is the ease at which GP was spinning the tires and not bogging down the engine. The tractor didn't appear to have enough traction or lifting capacity to really stress the loader frame in my opinion. Now, if done every day...again that would be a different story. In a situation where you don't have a tractor, dozer, excavator and loader, you make do with what you've got. Besides, aren't tractors made to work and endure a little wear and tear? I'm not interested in keeping my tractor in pristine condition for the next owner when he buys it at my estate sale!

I like stump buckets when operating them it looks more violent than it really is in the seat. The trouble is you always make a little progress so you get focused and keep hitting it harder as long as a guy takes it relatively easy you can get a lot done with no damage and they are a lot easier to transport than an excavator keep up the good work and thanks for the video

Dang, son! That's got to be hard on the FEL, then again, it IS a Kubota. Still, I'll be watching for your repair vids ;^) Too late now for you, but the guy who built my pole barn taught me to leave 6-8' of trunk standing when you take trees out. He chained 'em up high on the trunk, then used his wheel loader to pop 'em right out, roots and all. He took 28 trees and stumps out that way. Just another way to get the job done.

@@GPOutdoors I think people are concerned about shock loading the cylinders. Ramming solid rocks with the bucket tilted forward would put the most strain on the cylinders and pins. Ramming earth and roots with the bucket tilted back, less so. So use a low range, enough rpm to not stall, and start a bit farther back to get under the main roots where you have a bit more leverage to peel them up. Then you don't need to tilt your bucket ahead so much once you get closer to the base of the stump.

When you use the stump bucket you need to start with a wider circle. Then gradually work your way towards the stump. Slowly grade deeper as you get closer to the stump. You want to work in the same direction of the main roots and get the dirt from underneath them. This will put less stress on your loader as well as making it safer for digging so you don’t roll over. Kind of like a funnel.

I think it would be great for stumps 4" and under but bigger stumps I'd rent a excavator. The coast of it maybe cheaper to buy then to rent a excavator for a few days, but if you bend your loader arms or cylinders it may cost more in the long run. Keep up the good videos GP

You made a good point that you can own and have ON HAND this tool for less than two days rent. Yes a excavator would be faster but first you have to travel to the rental agent ( if there is one near you ) wreck your !/2 ton pickup trailing the excavator home and back. If you only have a small / medium stump to dig out use the handy - dandy compact tractor ( the same one you use for a dozen other tasks ) and wham bam and a little care the stump is out. I would just cut the stump at ground level below brush cutter ( the one you use with the compact tractor ). Have you ever watched the owner of Everything Attachments demonstrate some of his attachments. He is, by his own admission, brutal. He has bent loader arms and you are nothing like him in his abuse.He argues if he can't break it you won't either. As always, fun and educational and thanks Farmers Equipment. Take care in Canada.

I have been digging stumps with excavators for 15+ years, and I have to say that was impressive for a 26hp tractor! With a little more practice, I think you will find a technique that is a little easier. Great video!!

With a backhoe you generally have to reposition several times so that takes a good portion of the time. That stump bucket would make quick work of lighter stumps and if it can do the job on the old homestead, sometimes there's no hurry. If you're a contractor than probably not the best tool for the job. Time is money.

Nice work GP! I always wanted a stump bucket, the key is having one with a shorter snout like yours is for smaller compact and sub compact tractors, some guys try to use a traditional skidsteer stump bucket on their tractor and it just doesn’t have the leaverage to make a whole lot of use out of it since the snout on them is so much longer for a large skidsteer... like anything else a properly sized stump bucket can really do a lot of work! Love the Serrated teeth all the way down the entire sides too, that’s a nice touch you normally don’t see them length teeth like that. 👍🏻

I think it might be truly valuable for doing significant tree transplanting work. I would absolutely rent an excavator for the day for removing stumps that size. I've done it before, and the time difference between the excavator and the tractor makes the rental worthwhile, imo.

Gp I have a BH77 sub frame backhoe on the rear of my B2650. I use a 16” bucket with teeth for digging and a 24” without teeth as a clean up bucket. I also have the mechanical thumb installed. I highly recommend it. I think for the value of it you would get your money’s worth out of it. I live in the Canadian Shield just like you. Well worth the investment. I believe it would save you time plus wear and tear on your body and your tractor. Cheers. Enjoy watching your projects!

Jace Barr - no question that a backhoe is an expensive attachment but I totally agree. It would be way faster and it would avoid damage to the FEL. I thing Gord would get great use out of the backhoe!

I’ve made a hell of a mess digging out stumps with my 2038R backhoe. It’s certainly technique sensitive feeling out to where the roots are weakest. I destroyed the hydraulic cylinder on one stump since I had already replaced the stock sacrificial hydraulic hose previously with a real hose.

That's a stout looking bucket there. I had no idea that such a thing existed. Usually people just rent a stump grinder to deal with stumps sticking up above grade. I am sure with Guy's larger tractor, that stump would have come out a little quicker. Still that B2601 of yours did the job.

Agreed. Not everyone has a stump dump, so if disposing of the stump is an issue, then the stump grinder is a great option.

For stumps that size, recommend an excavator or backhoe instead. Or if you are determined to use the tractor, a PTO driven stump grinder would work better and provide less wear and tear on the FEL. I've removed about 40 stumps with my Woodland Mills WG24 grinder and it was very effective.

@@GPOutdoors Grinders are really good for lower hp tractors. You just back and forth over the stump, taking more each time until it's about 6-10 inches below the surface. Make sure you get one with carbide cutting teeth given your rocky soil.

GP never seen am implement like that before, your little tractor was working hard to get it out but did it. Seems like its quite hard going on the fel though. I usually burn my stumps, it gets rid of them, have a 1.2 metre going now for about 4 days and its almost gone. Enjoyable watching you remove the stump.

Mark Jones - just curious how you burn them out safely. I’ve watched a number of videos using different methods. Do you drill the centers and soak diesel or kerosene in them for a day or so, and then light them up?

@@profdave2861 I usually just pile branches on top of the stump and set it alight, once the stump starts to burn it just keeps going. The bigger the stump the bigger fire I build on top. Never use diesel or any other fuels.

I use the backhoe on my 23S and it is the same process, work out on the roots and move toward the stump as you go. I have to admit that the tool gets the job done but it does appear to have the potential to wear the front end. I guess it depends on how many stumps you will need to remove. Renting equipment sure does get expensive. No easy answer there. Have a great week...Cheers

Great demo, GP. Quite a bit of back-n-forth tractor maneuvering but that Stump Bucket ripped through roots. I'm wondering how that effects the FEL lift arms, pins, etc. I thought about getting something like this or as you mentioned, an excavator. The excavator is definitely pricey to rent. Loved seeing the stump bucket in action. Full-watch and have a fine week.

It doesn’t matter which tool you use. I prefer an excavator. The important part is to flush the stump down as close to the ground as possible. When the root breaks, it will break the stump as well.

We have a stump splitter that we put on one of our excavators, but if there are only a few we also put an deep “x” into the stump with a chainsaw. This saves time switching the attachments. Stay safe.

Backhoe on that tractor would be much better. BUT , as a cheaper , ok , MUCH cheaper option that bucket would work. Lot of wear and tear on your tractor & you. That FEL and an old chainsaw bar and blade will work at no added cost. BUT !!! , Have seen this type of bucket on a Bobcat and it worked very well. much more rugged , landsrapers round here like'm........ IMO.... CHEERS !!

It certainly did, Joe. But I'd be surprised to find any issue with the frame. Had a few folks suggest concerns with that attachment but not sure I see any difference using it, versus digging with a regular bucket or the root rake grapple. Not a fan of this one, Gord. That’s a lot of strain on the FEL and pins. Think the excavator is definitely the way to go. Could’ve had that out in 5-10 minutes and had the hole filled back in. I’d just save up a bunch of stumps and rent a mini excavator for the day/weekend. Then I wouldn’t be wrecking my tractor or have to store that giant bucket somewhere for the once a year it’s needed. Well it did the job... Hopefully your tractor is okay. That seems to be a pretty big hole to fill. If the objective was just to improve the 'line-of-sight' on the firing lane you could have cut the stumps down to close to ground level then dish out a bowl shape with the end of your chainsaw or axe and place a few b-b-q briquets in the dished out area and light them. They will smolder away for a few hours and the stump will never grow again - a lot less work without the pounding on your tractor - just some thoughts. Michael from Alberta

That's an interesting attachment, how long did it take you to dig that stump out of the ground with that attachment, curious if it's any faster than the method i currently use. I have an old 9000lb wench I bought from harbor freight years ago for my truck as part of my recovery kit I put together along with a handful of snatch blocks I picked up at harbor freight also. I try to use 2-3 trees to reduce the load on the trees I'm not cutting down, but ill take my chain saw, cut a V shape into the base of the stump on the back side opposite of the direction I pull it from so I can have a groove for the chain to bite into and not slip, then I run multiple directions with the snatch blocks to the different trees nearby, chain the wench to one of the trees and pull the stump out of the ground. Ive been using this method for at least 5+ years and pulled trees as large as 46 inches out of the ground. typically ill use the groove i cut in the stump until it partially pulls out or starts to lean toward the direction I'm pulling from, then i reposition the chain under the root ball, so its safer to pull out the rest of the way. an average size stump takes me about 30 minutes to pull out of the ground with my wench, but the larger ones like the 46-inch one took over an hour and about 8 snatch blocks to get enough mechanical advantage. I control it while standing behind a large tree, so if anything was ever to snap I'm safe from getting hit.

Yes I am going to have to pile with everyone else. It can be done with the attachment or a spoon and a hand mixer. The wear and tear on B series would be bad in the long run. I have a B260HSDC -TLB, save you FEL, and use a BH77 and dig it out. Those stumps are way out of the league of that device, save that for digging out bushes or small ..... did I say "small" ....stumps.

Gord it worked well but I'm not sure how much you would want to use it on large trees like the one you removed. Owner/operator I'm sure it would be fine but put it in a rental pool an I bet the tractor would be damaged in short time. I would be more comfortable with the implement on a skid steer.

Haven’t been on my B2601 in a few weeks :( I haven’t tackled any stumps that big but i like digging a big hole around it with the 60” bucket and eventually shaking it loose and using the curl function to finish ripping it out.
