I don't like games that make you unlock things before you can use them. That's not realistic. If you can afford to buy something, it should be available to you. But I'm gonna start by doing kind'a, sort'a what you did -- build a small town with some farms scattered around on dirt roads.

In Europe, it's very common for families to live in apartments, so the idea that families would demand low density housing specifically just seems weird to me. It feels like it would force you to zone swathes of low density car dependent suburbia whether you wanted to or not just to satisfy this demand. Same with demand for parking, which is apparently also a thing. What if you don't want to provide parking but instead make everything easily accessible by bicycle and public transport? You know, like most cities in Europe. The strangest thing is CO are based in Finland, not Houston Texas, so they should be perfectly aware of this.
@Coffeepanda294

@@JimmiG84 I suppose it's to set different groups apart, gameplay-wise, or to make some sort of progression from tiny flat to a larger apartment and then eventually a house when you have a family? But yeah, it's weird. And yes, parking demand should be based on number of cars. Then again I suppose it's a cultural thing irl, too. People in the West expect to be able to own, drive, and park their own private car, and if they can't, for whatever reason, they get unhappy and start asking politicians for more parking spaces.

I think it's tough to strike a balance between creating a game that is a challenge and doesn't have too many features that let you basically get around that challenge while also providing for people who are mainly focused on creating really attractive cities, where some temporary reality-breaking is the best way to go about making things look nice. CS1 was honestly way too easy as a game with the main exception being Industries DLC and the challenge of traffic management from it - but with all of the mods and assets it became an awesome sandbox for creating cool looking cities. CS2 appears to be primarily focused on making it more interesting as a management sim while also addressing some of the painful aspects of CS1, but I think that they went in a more realistic direction for how the game looks and got rid of some of the especially quirky things e.g. how nodes and terrain interacted means that with mods and assets it will absolutely surpass CS1 for making realistic, nice looking cities. Just going to take a while. I enjoy some of the gameplay aspects of CS1 but I absolutely play with mods like Move It just as a basic requirement because it's so tough to make things look nice without it, and TM:PE is just necessary to have traffic behave nicely and more realistically. Then there are some things I'm really hoping CS2 addresses, like the lack of any kind of traffic management tools for trains and how easy it is for them to just end up in an unrealistic deadlock.
@Hannodb1961

Very good comment. I think people need to understand that CSL is first and foremost a City _simulator,_ not a City _painter._ I get that some people are only interested in making pretty places and don't really care much for the management part of the game, and that years of mods has made it possible for them in CSL 1, but it needs to be kept in mind that this is *not* what the game intends to be. These things will surely become available later as the modding community comes in. As for me, nothing makes me loose interest faster in a content creator when they start plopping RCI buildings manually. Yes, it's prettier, but by doing that, you're no longer playing the simulation and just turned the game into a painter, and that is totally not my play style. I _want_ the city to respond to what I've build, either good or bad. I _want_ the challenge to get the city to look like I want _and_ have it work at the same time. Plopping RCI building is a cheat and a hack in my book, but to each his own.
@DevynCairns
@DevynCairns 11 ай бұрын
@@Hannodb1961 it's funny that you mention that, because CS2 actually does have a version of ploppable RICO in the form of signature buildings, which still behave as normal RICO but also have other benefits. In that sense they are still thinking about people who want to be creative and have some more direct control over what things look like, without going totally in that direction

@@DevynCairns Yes. I have very mixed feelings about the Industries DLC. One the one hand, I like the content and depth it ads to the city, but on the other hand, it is not the Mayor's job to place individual industrial buildings. I would actually prefer that zoning functionality gets expanded to the maximum extend. As in, you simply zone for school, and school related buildings come up to fill the space. As the demand for that school increases, so the buildings will become better optimized to use the space avaiable. Almost like airports and harbors used to work in SC2000. I thought that was really a step in the right direction, but unfortunately, no city builder explored that design choice further since SC2000.

@@Hannodb1961 yeah maybe to some extent. I would have fun setting FAR and height limits but maybe not everyone would haha I'm not sure about schools - I don't think they really come in and fill zoning as often as either cities (in the case of public schools) decide to put a school there and zone appropriately, or private organizations do the same and lobby the city for the zoning that would permit it.
@DevynCairns
@DevynCairns 11 ай бұрын
@@Hannodb1961 actually one thing I would really have liked to see would be permissive rather than single-category zoning. i.e. rather than just a mixed use zone, you could have a zone that allows medium-density residential and commercial, and mixed use buildings would obviously be permitted but so would just standalone residential/commercial. usually in my cities I have to go and zone individual parcels because I want low density commercial and residential buildings and office next to each other rather than creating big districts of the same use, but it would be nice to not have to do that

@Thuin8

What I recognized watching people have trouble with the zoning: when creating a straight street segment and adding a new straight street segment to it, the exact place where the new street is snapping to the old one is determining if there will be a connected zone or not. Not 100% sure if that was part of your struggle with the zoning. :)

I think the way I approach building in CS2 is different than in CS1. CS1 I kind of just sprawled while I noticed in CS2 I'm thinking more intentionally about where I place things, where I plan neighborhoods and how I redevelop areas that became inefficient with the growing city. I think maybe it's the smaller tiles, reminds me a lot of city boundaries in real life. Often cities expand through purchases or annexes of undeveloped plots of land so you often end up with a patchwork of development. The bigger tiles in CS1 had benefits but often resulted in massive sprawl and odd scale issues. My cities in CS2 now look way closer to real life cities you'd see in satellite maps. Overall, very impressed with CS2 despite the obvious faults which can hopefully be patched in the next few months

The greatest challenge before even playing seemed to be how much it drained my computer’s resources at startup. My computer is a monster and it was the first time I witnessed it run all 7 fans. Luckily the developers addressed that issue fast and now my computer doesn’t sound like it’s getting ready for take off. Secondly, the game loads much faster than the previous version and maybe it’s because the game remains vanilla and while I miss Workshop I don’t miss the errors that came with it, so the game can update and not effect or clash with any custom components. All in all, it’s got a learning curve but one I think I can live with and appreciate a more precise game.

While I'm enjoying the increased power of some of the new tools like the Road tool, I cannot help but feel that they really dropped the ball in some other 'obvious' ways too. The zoning not matching up well, the lack of a line tool for props, paths not being able to connect to parks and such, maps again being an absolute pain in the ass with their weird elevations. Like I get that the elevations are more realistic this way, but if the game cannot handle it all that well, then i'd rather have flatter and plateau like maps.

@@CitiesByDiana Absolutely. They hired modders when they started on CS2 that did and still do some of the road tool mods if I remember correctly. Indicating that they were actively looking at what modders came up with to improve the gameplay. Yet now it also looks like they have stopped looking at them the moment they started actual development as well. It is still about a month till release so I have a bit of hope left that CO is able to listen to these critiques and get them into the game on if not soon after release, but I would really like it if they said as much.

Thank you for this video and your honest review and critiques! There does seem to be a lot of hype and I totally understand them wanting to market the game before release, however, it can be good and bad. People can be so excited with high expectations and then disappointed when they actually play! I am so disappointed in what the buildings look like and why everything looks so muted and desaturated. I hope they bring colors back and more interesting architecture in. I’m still very excited about the game though.

this game seems like it's doing some good, but a lot of bad. I am getting more Sims city vibes from this than actual city skylines, and it just seems..unfinished, like basic auto-fixes and features that were in the previous don't seem to exist here. It's like road anarchy is the default, and you can't turn it off. That just sounds awful honestly, and not worth the ridiculous amount of effort required. I know, thanks to some super detailed cities I've made. I am honestly really sad about this, I really wanted a new city simulator that does what cities skylines does but doesn't need mods(except for assets obviously.) It's a shame this seems more like a poorly made permanent modded version of skylines, rather than its second version.

Great vid Diana - you point out quite a lot that needs to be improved. And your having to re-learn your building somewhat. I just finished watching Overcharged Egg's part II and he seems to have a better handle on it; probablly because you come from a detailing aspect (which needs to be fixd here!) but Egg comes at it more from a civil engineers perspective. First thing he did was spending ages preparing the land sites and putting in flat areas and terraces. Then his road network and trains seemed to fit much better. I think the game looks a lot less forgiving - and in this regard, preparation seems to be the key, much as in real life. You don't want to build on sloped areas unless unavoidable. Having said all that, I echo your concerns regarding props and prop line tools, and how the zoning works - or doesn't! Keep at it - always loved your builds, so lets hope you find a happy place with this game.

Nice Storytelling, and nice video, really wants me to get a hand on this game soon! Just a few words to the comparison CS1 vs CS2. I think what made a city alive and you were able to identify yourself with the city in CS1 was the mods (this opportunity to thank all you modders who did a great job to make the game not only a clicker and need-fulfiller, but a toolkit and playground to build ... everything) in CS1 base game it was also just need fulfilling and plugging holes, the soul of the city came when it got possible to modify the city on your needs. It will come, and i think it will come quicker than in CS1, because lots of the things we spent hours in CS1 are already covered in the game mechanics out of the box. We just have to wait, and as the mods come, we can put a soul to the city again. This said by someone who has 2K hours in CS1 ;)

I respect you a lot, along with city planner plays, you have the most straight forward relaxing content. I became addicted to building round circular city layouts on the first one. Traffic always scores at least a B, even an A sometimes, and you do not have to go crazy with mass transit. Also, my roads never have four way stops, only left or right turns. I usually just start with a large round about at the center and build out from there. I would be interested to see how well that works in this game.

I am an amature compared to most CS1 players. Although I purchased my first PC game in 1990 and have played numerous city building games, I only have 400 hours on CS1. I purchased CS2, downloaded it and watched it crash on my first launch. I started playing the game after I rebooted my system. The game is different and I do not know if that is good. When I say different when I build a road it feels like I am just aiming and hoping for the best. CS1 feels more accurate, you will see what I mean when you play it. Performance…. Not to jump on the dead horse, but yes performance is an issue. I mean a real issue. I have a system less than 18 months old with some pretty good hardware. I am a pilot and I purchased the laptop for MS Flight Sim and I get great performance. I normally upgrade every 3 1/2 years. I am going to purchase a new system to play this game… crazy, but I am now retired and I am catching up on some gaming from while i was a way working 😂 With all that said… I agree about the heart of the city. I do not feel connected to my build. I did mention to Diana that I am colorblind. I see colors, just not all shades. This game seems pretty monotone. Lots of grey, tans, brown… earth tones. NEED MORE COLOR! 😊

I'm happy to hear that cities skylines 2 is harder. I honestly think city skylines 1 is too easy and ends up just being a creative sandbox then any kind of challenge. Though having a challenge or more difficult gameplay my stiffen creativity for those who just want to build a good looking city. I wish games like city skylines had difficulty levels to allow all playstyle, like a casual option for more laid back building, a normal balanced one, and a difficult/challenging mode that makes it difficult to manage a city successfully without understanding and utilizing all the mechanics. I do hope they are able to fix some of the complaints i've seen.

Noticed in a CPP video, that you can name trees. Perhaps this is an opportunity to do a flora biography once the seasonal tree mechanics are fully fleshed out. This could also be used to demo how long it takes to grow trees. (Romeo & Juliet with Tchaikovsky in the background?) Sorry if this idea is too crazy, but if anyone can turn garbage into gold, it's you. Keep up the great work! (Btw, I wouldn't be surprised if you already had this planned. haha)

Always gets me when I see your cavalier attitude as you partially/totally destroy your cities! hahaha I'm a noob. Only been playing since May, caught up in hype over CS2. Only recently started using mods and custom assets. Have pre-ordered CS2. I have a couple of questions. 1. When you BD your cities, do you get a refund? Game Anarchy has spoiled me. 2. I have followed your recommendation about BDing all the trees and props in large areas b4 building to reduce processing loads, but because of the long growing times in CS2, would you recommend to leave all existing trees unless you are sure to build on top of them? 3. After CS2 is released, will there be any reason to play CS1?
@CitiesByDiana
@CitiesByDiana 11 ай бұрын
Great question, as far as I can see you do get a refund for deleting stuff. I do think there's lots of reasons to still play CS1 after CS2 comes out to be honest First and foremost: ASSETS. The sheer number of custom buildings available for CS1 will take YEARS to reach parity in CS2, and likely WONT EVER get to that point. Certain mods like Procedural Objects will NEVER be put into CS2 because they're so niche but so so useful for aesthetics and detailing and generally for city painter style play CS1 is by far superior and will be for awhile. For city management style play, CS2 wins out for sure.

I wouldn't worry too much, I think mods can turn a management game into a detailer sandbox, its much harder the other way around. But I would love if they added things like mayor elections, public worker strikes, citizen petitions, NIMBY movements and tools to politically maneuver around them. It would be exciting to build a city in a hurricane prone areas and prepare your city for it. Or be in an epicentre of protests and get to decide how to respond.
