The Russions were outshot but not "outplayryed" as commented on by the biased CBC commentators. There is no concept of "outplaying" an opponnent unless you win! Tretiak had plenty of defensive support in front of him from the forwards and defensmen. In fact his "big" save was not made by him as described by the CBC but by the defensman Guseve . Montreal didn't win a home game because they were not good enought! Get used to it!

Plus, different styles of play. The NHL shoots the puck from all angles and all the time. The Soviets set it up more so shots on goal is never a good measure against USSR
@dzanier Жыл бұрын
It is possible to win and be outplayed, but this wasn’t one of those cases. In that Montreal game, the Habs played better. The Soviets were not a high shot volume team, so that is even more deceptive that usual when looking at this game. They were a high shot quality team. But the Habs game was a different animal.

Even just two years before this night this would've been a good game. Rangers still had Hadfield, Park, Ratelle, Rousseau, Giacomin. But after all the changes the team made after the end of 73-74 and immediately after the beginning of the 75-76 season, they were not the same squad that went to the seventh game of the semifinals in 74. Russians would've won anyway, but this game was no contest whereas two years earlier it would've been a good game.

The Central Army Team might as well been the National Team. I recognize sooo many players from the 1972 Summit Series. The Rangers never had a chance from before the start of the match. The only team that could match them was the Canadians (And that was because it was at the Forum, huge home ice advantage)
@johnkritikos32474 жыл бұрын
The canadiens were better than the red army at that time. Completely outclassed the red army in the 70’s. Nothing to do with home ice. All hall of famers on those canadiens team.”s. In 1977 they lost only 8 games in the whole season. They had it all. Speed skill, toughness and great coaching.

Well, basically and basically; CSKA had borrowed e.g. Maltsev and Vasiliev from Dynamo Moscow for this tour, so it definitely was a somewhat stronger Red Army team than normally. However, back in 1975/76, the 2nd line on the national team was the Spartak Moscow trio of Yakushev, Shadrin and Shalimov, and they do not play here; some other key players like defenceman Lyapkin and forward Kapustin are also missing, so I don't know about 80 percent, maybe about 65...

The NHL teams ran out of variety ideas to counter the Red Army's superb speed and strategy. Bobby Orr was right commentating in the 1979 Challenge Cup games that the dirty bullying goon garbage doesn't work after the first time you faced the Soviets. The Flyers found that out the next time they faced the Red Army after 1976. Most of the NHL teams looked like minor league amateurs against the Red Army team. How the hell did an amateur College team who was destroyed 10 days earlier 10-3 beat these same Players 4-3 in 1980? How the hell did the Sabres beat them 6-1 and the Canadiens beat them 4-2 less than 2 months before that?

The Rangers, Shouldn't have Traded Ed Giacomin, because John Davidson, Though he wasn't Bad, But Giacomin Was Far better.
@dzanier7 жыл бұрын
Technically they didn't trade him. He was put on waivers and Detroit claimed him. Emile Francis had to make changes. Just 5 days later he traded Park and Ratelle for Esposito and Vadnais. That 75 playoff loss to the Islanders produced major changes. The team didn't recover until 1978.
@fentonhardy81767 жыл бұрын
Daniel Zanier I guess your right, I bet they still regret sending ratty and Park away. Ratelle is one of the greatest Centers I ever seen, and Park is only Second to Bobby Orr as Top Defencemen. But to be honest they were rejuvenated in Boston, they played great for Don Cherry in the Late 70's.
@dzanier7 жыл бұрын
Fred Shero felt that the Rangers window of opportunity to win the Cup had passed. Guys like Fairbairn, Stemkowski (came in mid 70-71), Ratelle, Tkaczuk, Gilbert, Park, Giacomin, Villemure, had been together for 6 years and the team had come so close (7th game semifinals in 71 and 74, finals in 72). After the loss to the Isles in 75 and the slow start in 75-76, he felt the team needed a shakeup. The Bruins wanted to shake things up too. They knew Orr would be gone soon, what with his knee being in bad shape, and they felt Espo had become a defensive liability even with his scoring about 50-60 goals a season. They reshaped the team more in Don Cherry's image. Ratelle is a player whose number I'd like to see the Rangers retire. After Messier, he was the greatest center the team has ever had. Park did so well in Boston that I think he's somewhat forgotten in New York. Espo was productive as a Ranger, but his best years were behind him. He never went over 42 goals in a season with us. Vadnais did fairly well with New York. But there's simply no question Boston won that trade hands down. An argument could easily be made that at the time it was the biggest blockbuster trade in the history of the NHL. Those early 70s Rangers teams were the best Ranger teams of the last 50 years. From 69-70 through 73-74, the Rangers were a contender and an elite team. It's a shame they didn't win it all.
