@@mr.devil9577 No, if the Devils win this series in 2OT, it's still one of the greatest series of all time. The Devils winning the Cup in 2000 was not boring. That was a truly thrilling ending to a Stanley Cup Finals and the Devils were truly worthy victors. When the Devils swept Detroit in 1995 it was a jolt through the NHL especially because it was such an upset. Granted in 2003 them beating the Mighty Ducks was a disappointment because in the Devils 4 victories, they won them all by 3 goals, those games were boring, but to New Jersey's credit, it's because they were so dominant. The 3 Anaheim victories saw 2 of them go to overtime and the other had the Paul Kariya goal after getting laid out. So yes, I think the world wanted Anaheim to get that cup as they seemed to have pixie dust all over them that year. But I also recall the Devils had to beat Ottawa in the ECF and it went to game 7 in Ottawa score tied and Jeff Friesen scored the series winner with just 2 minutes left. Heartstopping stuff. Not boring at all. 2000 ECF Game 7 vs Philly same thing, had to score late after taking out Lindros. Yes the Devils style was offputting but nobody can deny they've won some great games en route to the Cup.

Brodeur played on some of the stingiest defensive teams in modern NHL History, and the Devils neutral zone trap was a huge part of that. He was a good goalie, but many goalies would have won 3 cups with that franchise in those years.

@@timetowakeup6302 nope not even close. Give credit where credit is due. Not Brodeur’s fault he had a good defense. We’ve seen teams in the past and even today constantly outshoot their opponent and lose the game. The buck stops with the goaltender. Most shots per game stat do not win you games, quality shots and capitalizing on opportunities do. Need elite goaltending to prevent that.

Was watching this game at Third and Long sports bar on 35th Street and 3rd Avenue in Manhattan. The place was jam packed. I normally didn’t watch the playoff games in bars. If I wasn’t at the game, I was watching it at home. In this case, I’m glad I stayed out. The electricity in the bar was palpable. I don’t recall anyone feeling the Rangers weren’t going to win the game, even after the Devils tied it. I guess we just couldn’t conceive of them losing and how that would’ve felt. And winning it after having been so close to losing it in Game 6 made it that much sweeter.

It's a combination of the room itself (and they managed to preserve the acoustics pretty well when they remodeled it in the 2010s, which is an underrated accomplishment) and the fact that every achievement for the Rangers or the Knicks (and I say this as a fan of both teams but especially the Rangers) feels like driving a stake into the heart of a dark history, like no, really, our team is allowed to do good things. It's beyond cathartic.

Gary Thorne was too carried away about Stephane Matteau's winner by saying "1940 is history!" It's just like saying the 1980 Miracle on Ice U.S. men's hockey team won the gold medal when they defeated the mighty Soviet Union where they have to beat Finland in the final round-robin game to secure it. I also remember watching NHL Network's Documentary Road to Victory about the 1994 New York Rangers Stanley Cup title run and heard Sam Rosen and John Davidson talking to each other about sending both the Rangers and New Jersey Devils to the Stanley Cup Finals to take on the Vancouver Canucks. That gave me a chuckle.

It would be cool if he actually did predict a win in game 6 but it's a fact that he never did. It was a NY Post story that was made up by a Post reporter to hype up the rangers. Do you believe that just one single reporter caught messier alone (1950's style) and got him to say that without it being recorded? There's usually ten or so reporters around a player asking them questions while recording it on video or a little recording device to take notes. Messier never even commented on that headline before the game and that newspaper came out the day before the game. He had over 37 hours before the game to say he made the prediction but he chose to hide. He never predicted anything before or after. You'll never ever see one video of mess admitting to it because he never did it. He's very rarely asked about it as well. Sad for rangers fans but true.

You make a compelling case, however just a few weeks ago on an NBC broadcast alongside Chelios he did own the prediction, so idk...

Wrong. Messier was interviewed by Larry Brooks of the Post and said the following when asked about game 6 "We know what we have to do and we are going to do it. We are going to win game 6 and bring it back to the Garden for game 7." The Post headline was "Captain Courageous' Bold Prediction: We'll Win Tonight." No one used the word guarantee but Messier clearly stated that the Rangers WOULD win the game.

I was gonna buy a book about the NY Rangers history but I read it all on a Chinese fortune cookie slip. It said “1994 Rangers GM Neil Smith Blow Glenn Sather and Dynasty Oilers for Cup”.

I’m a Ranger fan, but let’s face it. That 94 Stanley Cup should’ve been Vanbiesbrouck’s Cup, instead of Richter’s Cup. No disrespect to Richter, but Beezer was just better.

The guys that were there and performed all earned it. I would have loved to see Mike Gartner and Tony Amonte hoist the cup but it wasn't in the cards for them.

If Beezer was better, they would've kept him. Richter was way better thank you think. you watch that 96 World Cup and watch Richter steal that series against an all star stacked Canadian team with Gretzky, Messier, Lindros, etc. Richter was incredible. He earned the MVP of that World Cup and he most definitely deserved the cup in 94! Beezer was a very good goalie but I'll take Richter at his best over most any other goalie in history!

@@TheSoprano54 I’m not saying otherwise, but Beezer led that 96 Florida Panther team to the Final. If they had started Beezer over Hanlon in games 2 and 3 of the 84 Patrick Division Semifinals against the Islanders, they would’ve been his victories and then they would’ve started him in game 4 of that series and would’ve therefore, held on to that 1-0 lead and maybe even won, 2-0 with an empty netter and we would’ve won that series and also that 7-1 victory in game 3 would’ve instead, been 7-0, which means that not only do we get revenge against the Isles from our losses in 81, 82 and 83, but it’s in the best-of-5 opening round series, with all 3 of our victories in that series being shutouts. Then, we would’ve beaten the Capitals and Canadiens, each in 5 games, therefore, going 7-0 in Madison Square Garden during the Prince of Wales Conference playoffs in total and 3-0 in game 4s in the playoffs in total, including game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against Edmonton. Unfortunately, our run falls short, as we lose game 7, 2-1 in Edmonton, as Beezer’s unlikely and miraculous Cinderella run for us ends that year with a game 7 loss in Edmonton, as does Pierre Larouche’s miraculous 52-goal season (assuming that he had 52 goals that year, instead of 48). Now, having reached game 7 of the 1984 Stanley Cup Final, we would’ve won the Presidents’ trophy in the 1984-85 season and we would’ve swept the Flyers in the opening round of the playoffs and then crushed the Islanders in 5 games in the Patrick Division Final, before losing in 6 games to the Buffalo Sabres in the Prince of Wales Conference Final and the Sabres would’ve gone on to lose the Stanley Cup in 7 games to the reigning Stanley Cup champion Oilers. With this, Beezer wins the 1984-85 Calder, Vezina, Hart and William M. Jennings trophies and the Lester B. Pearson award, while Larouche has 52 goals for the 2nd straight year and Herb Brooks wins the Jack Adams award. Then, everything that I mentioned in my previous comment, would’ve worked out like that for Beezer, Gretzky and the Rangers because of motivation and Gretzky would’ve signed a 1-year contract extension in the 88 offseason with Edmonton and then he come to us in the 89 offseason, instead of waiting until the 96 offseason to come to us because his goal would’ve been to give a Cup not only to us, but to Beezer and then, we would’ve swept the Islanders in that 90 opening round playoff series and then we would’ve beaten New Jersey in 7 games, before falling in 5 games to Regular Season champion Boston, who would lose in the Stanley Cup Final in 5 games to Edmonton, with Mark Messier winning the Conn Smythe trophy that year. Then, in the 91 playoffs, we would’ve beaten Washington in 7 games in the opening round, before losing in 5 games in the 2nd round to eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh. Then, we would’ve still acquired Mark Messier in the 91 offseason and won the Presidents’ trophy in the 1991-92 season and beaten New Jersey in the opening round of the playoffs, before losing the 2nd round in 6 games to defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh, who would go on to repeat as champions. The only difference is that we would’ve alternated victories against New Jersey throughout that series, as 20-year-old Martin Brodeur would’ve replaced Chris Terreri in relief in game 1 and would’ve started for New Jersey the rest of the series and we would’ve won game 7, 2-1, instead of 8-4. Then, in the 1992-93 season, while we still miss the playoffs and Roger Neilson is still fired midseason, we avoid finishing last in our division and we still hire Mike Keenan in the 93 offseason. The only differences are that we keep Beezer and we acquire Jari Kurri from Stanley Cup finalist Los Angeles. We would’ve gotten 7 more points in the 1993-94 season than our original total, which would’ve given us 119 points, instead of 112. We, then, sweep the Islanders in the opening round of the playoffs with shutouts in games 1, 2 and 3 of that series and then we would’ve beaten the Washington and the New Jersey like we actually did and then, we would’ve beaten Vancouver, like we actually did, with the difference being that we win game 7 of that series, 7-0, instead of 3-2. With that, Beezer wins the Conn Smythe, Hart, Vezina and William M. Jennings trophies, while Gretzky wins the Art Ross and inaugural Maurice Richard trophies with 70 goals and 92 assists for 162 total regular season points that year and Mike Keenan wins the Jack Adams award, which keeps him on as head coach, until February of 1999. This means that instead of Richter, it’s Beezer who leads Team USA to that World Cup victory in 1996 and he’s the one who starts for Team USA in the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah and they preserve the 2-2 tie in the gold medal game against Team Canada, rather than giving up 3 goals, after tying the game at 2. Then, Jeremy Roenick scores the overtime goal against Martin Brodeur and it’s the host country, not the country that’s most famous for hockey that ends up taking home the gold medal and it would’ve been a great way for Beezer to end his Olympic career and he would’ve declared going into the 2002-03 season that it (that 2002-03 season) would be his final season. My scenario also means that the 2000s would’ve been our not only our worst decade, but our only bad decade, even if we would’ve won the 2005-06 Atlantic Division crown and had beaten New Jersey in 7 games, before losing to eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina in 5 games because that would’ve been the only decade where we never made it past the 2nd round of playoffs because it would’ve been 3 straight 2nd round exits in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and 1 opening round exit, which would’ve been in 2009.

You really are an idiot. Beezer was an admirable goalie but not even close to Mike Richter. I even met beezer and he admitted that Richter was better. Your stupidity let alone fantasy that the rangers win more cups is just plain stupid.

Messier was built up and way over hyped by the NY media. Read the proof and know the truth. As Captain in Edmonton: 1989 KOd in Rd 1 / 1990 won cup / 1991 KOd in Rd 3 /// As a Ranger: 1992 KOd Rd 2 / 1993 missed playoffs by losing 11 out of last 12 games and last in Patrick Division / 1994 won the cup after NYR cleaned house and got 8 ex Oilers and 6 Blackhawks / 1995 8th seed and KOd in Rd 2 / 1996 KOd in Rd 2 / 1997 Gretz helps NYR to Rd 3 but no further / with Vancouver missed playoffs 1998 - 1999 - 2000 / Back in NY and he leads his team to the golf course in 2001 - 2002 - 2003 - 2004! Great player when surrounded by Oiler teammates and a below average player without his Oiler teammates! 1994 LETS GO REUNITED OILERS and HAWKS! 1-2-3 CUPS FOR CAPTAIN SCOTTY AND 1-2-3-4 FOR CAPTAIN POTVIN! WHO SUCKS? RANGERS!!!

He won a Con Smythe with Edmonton. He could have won a second one. He was as responsible as Gretzky for the 4 cups in 5 years. He came to New York and immediately won a Hart and two years later he scored 30 points in 23 games and could have easily won a second Con Smythe if Leetch hadn't gone insane and scored 35 points. Messier is properly rated as one of the most legendary players of all time.
