Quick and unedited review of new 28" Samsung U28R550 that appeared in shops in December 2019. I use it mainly for programming. I also compare it to LG 27UL600 from the same price range and IPS UHD panel.
Good info:
www.displayspe...
Info about panels 2020 (you'll also find this monitor in there):
www.displaynin...
★★★★★ panel quality
★★★★★ colors
★★✰✰✰ monitor stand
★✰✰✰✰ extremely retarded VESA mount
Pros:
price, quality, size, very good panel quality, simple but very fast On screen control, HDR
quick access to brightness, contrast, eye saver mode, FreeSync
Cons:
no software to control the monitor from PC
Not many settings
very basic stand (no pivot, swivel or height adjustment)
Very small difference of min/max contrast level. really. On LG on low contrast everything was getting very dark grey and very bright white when max contrast. On samsung very small difference between contrast levels
The bigest CON is the retarded vesa mount. It's 75x75 and it's a little bit deepened, so you can't fit there a standard universal mount that has both 75x75 and 100x100 holes.
I'll probably return this monitor only because of this vesa mount :(
UPDATE: 12.01.2020:
I'll copy one comment response here, as it adds comparison with one more monitor that I did, and my final decision and preference of the 3 similarly priced monitors:
Hi,
After trying these 2 and one more (27" Acer Nitro VG270Kbmiipx), I've settled up with Samsung one. It's least tiring for eyes and colors are most pleasant.. Between these 3 LG had worst colors. When compared with Samsun White colors seemed pinky regardless of color calibration. Acer's white was most white. Samsung's black and dark was most black and most pleasant for eyes.
Between the 3, only Samsung doesn't have software to control screen. You can do it only with joysick, and it has least settings of all 3. However they are fast accessible with joystick, so for quick brightness change, samsung is still winner.
Samsung also has a retarded VESA 75x75 and if you want to attach it to universal 75/100 mount, you'll have to bend the holder's corners with pliers. That's what I did and I ended up keeping Samsung.
In LG I didn't like the on screen control. THey didn't upgrade it for 5 years. I didn't like how it looks (white cabbles and white back) and I didn't like the colors. It was my least favorite of the 3.
In Acer I didn't like that when switching between modes it doesn't keep my brightness/contrast settings and resets them to Mode's default. Also I didn't like that it's internal power adapter is making hearable ultra sound noise. Very annoying.
In Samsung I didn't like VESA and the limited settings. But it makes up with best panel of all 3. It's really most suited for long programming sessions. Has beautiful colors and nice 28" size.

The best review i've ever seen for this monitor as well as the comparatives plus very honest opinions , usually european reviews are much better and more 'real world'. no crap fake sponsored reviews that at the end they barely talk about the monitor itself. Samsung seems to be the real winner, i'm thinking to get it for my pc via displayport to enjoy it fully with 4k@60hz and freesync activated for programming and especially gaming a lot (except the fps games which i'll probably keep playing them on my TN that has 1ms response time). Thank you for all the info, i also read the description of the video and helped even more plus all the comments, amazing. Subscribed

Excellent review. I also tried different monitors (AOC CU34G2 and Dell S3221QS) and at the end kept the Samsung U28R550UQR (28" IPS) as it is definitely the best. And after your review I am even tempted to buy the second one as I currently have two Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFPb) around the Samsung (i.e. three monitors in total) but they are both FHD only. So, if I think of some alternative use for one of the Dells I may buy the second Samsung... (I don't have space for FOUR monitors on my desk :)

I use 2 4k monitors at home, and just one 4k monitor at work in the office. While the second monitor brings usefulness, i don't miss it that much in the office. I'm a software developer. So most of the time I have split screen. In the left i have 2 windows if vs code and in the right the chrome with dev console open. Other apps like excels, db manager, outlook i keep on the second screen or alt tab of at work. So I'd say that 1 4k monitor is almost enough to work with 4 windows without rotating head too much

Hi, I'm very interested in this monitor, but like you, I must use this with a VESA Wall Mount. I'm in a situation where I cannot use the stand. I'm quite concerned about manipulating the VESA bracket to make it fit. Was it relatively easy to bend the holders corners? I'll also look for a Vesa mounting bracket that is easier to manipulate. Some of them look very substantial and less pliable.
@klukiyan
@klukiyan 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it was very easy to bend them using pliers. It's been a year already, and it's still attached to the mount and it's great. I have it attached to the desk that can be lifted into standing position. So i often manipulate the monitor position back and front. Sometimes I turn it when I need to show something to my wife or if I want to see the monitor from the kitchen table. The up and down poison, i also sometimes use, but less often. So if you get a cheaper mount that doesn't have up/down - it will still work well. I also love that there are no stand legs in front of the keyboard. There is lots of free space under the moninor

@@klukiyan Thank you so much. I looked carefully and found a VESA wall mount that has a plate that looks easier to manipulate and bend than some of the others I have seen. I'm grateful to have watched your review plus one other that brings up the same issue. Otherwise, I might have chosen a VESA mount that was less pliable. I have taken the plunge and ordered my monitor and the VESA wall mount. I'm using it for music production. I have a 16" inch MacBook Pro and am feeling the constraints of the small screen for music editing. This should do the trick beautifully as it will be mounted just above my digital piano with my MacBook just below it.

Great Information as I am in search for a new monitor for programming tasks. Currently I am using 2 23.6 inch Samsung IPS Full HD monitors S24F356FHU which are decent in Black and colours are OK. My first Try in 28 inchK was a TN Benq EL2870U - a terrible gray instead of black and viewing angles in front were mediore. Glad I found your video on the Samsung U28R550. Are you still convinced of this monitor and, as silence is important for me, is the power supply silent and applies the same for the monitor eletronics at low brightness (currently I use 12 as Brightness setting)? I'm thinking about getting this monitor or the Samsung U32H850 Quantum Dot 31.5 inch that I understand you can get an update from the Korean site and get HDCP support most of the time *ehem*. So the choice of Samsung one from late 2019 model - 28" ISP vs 2017 model (well I hope made in 2019) - 31.5" VA type, both 10 bits but one with QDot both panels made by Innolux in Taiwan. Not sure about the size difference and how 4K and upscaling will look on them. I mostly want to do tv shows, movies and browsing and office on them so I'm intrigued by the good blacks and contrasts of the VA but maybe it is just a tad to big and impractical for a monitor on a desk not sure what is your general impression with more time n the 28 4k display how are the blacks ?

I haven't tried Netflix on it, I have a 55OLED tv for that. But, before it I tried 35" MVA ultrawide from AOC and the Samsung's 32" quantum dot VA. I was extremely disappointed in VA for programming. The colors are changing dramatically even on small angles. I had difficulty reading the code on the sides of the screen. Maybe for TV shows, sitting far it's not an issue, but for working I wouldn't recommend VA even though it's cheaper and really does have higher contrast. 32 vs 28 is quite a considerable difference. 32ips is generally almost twice more expensive than 27/28ips or than 32va

@@Random_One_ Feel free to ask as much as you want. I'm happy to help. In theory the 1080p should look exactly same as on a 1080p screen simply puttin 4pixels in one. In practive however, the monitor (or the graphic card) is upscaling it and it looks much better than it would look like on 1080p screen. So yes, you can watch 1080p and even 720p withtou any issues. The interface I would however recommend to scale to 150%. With 100% everyhting is too small :) Black and grey colors are very good on this samsung, better than on LG and even than on Acer Nitro. When I compared it to Acer, acer's white seemed more white, Samsung's was somehow a bit yelowish-greenish. but still more pleasant. The biggest difference in colors I've seen on RED when made side by side comparison of eizo's web-based test. There Samsung had really RED, while both Acer and LG looked more orangish. Received the RU55 monitor yesterday, it's awesome! I connect my MIBOX3 to HDMI1 and PS5 to HDMI2, but why can't I turn on game mode on the monitor when I use PS5? The monitor no longer allows me to use "game mode" in the "picture" settings, but the MIBOX 3 HDMI1 allowed me to turn on game mode. On PS5 I have of course PC selection, but on MIBOX3 I turn on AV selection. FreeSync and HDR On When Supported are turned on, but why does the monitor not allow the game mode to be turned on, I need an explanation, but I'll be honest, right now the PS5 quality of the image I see on this monitor excites me!!

Hi. Can you work with this monitor in absolutely darkness? You have said that its minimum brithness level slightly higher then LG's level. I have Acer EB490QK. I love this monitor for colors and angles but I hate it for 80 nits minimum brigtness. I use it with Brightness - 0 and Contrast -15, and its very annoing. How about U28R550, can you use it with Brigtness 0 and Contrast 50 in dark? I read LG's review and its min level is about 45 nits. There is an opinion that for working in the dark the ideal level is 30-40 nits, but 50 nits already irritate the eyes and you have to turn on the light. I have tired to search monitor for code and texts and this model looks really very good, only con for me is minimum brightness. Could you give some comment at that point, please? Second question - it this Samsung is fully quiet? My old 23" Samsung had some high level sound, and I can nothing to do with it. Acer is fully quiet. Thanks!

Hi, I have my PC in a very bright room. So I have to switch monitor brightness every morning (when sun shines into room to ~40), then in the afternoon (~15-25) and then when I code in the night (0-10). The contrast I usually keep at 60 and don't move it up or down at all. I do code sometimes in absolute darkness, but usually I prefer to switch on the desk lamp. When I was comparing it side by side with LG, and Acer Nitro - both Acer Nitro and LG could offer a lower brightness - but the colors and contrast were getting very bad. So I still prefer to have Samsung with small USB lamp next to it, rather than LG or Acer Nitro. Regarding noise, it doesn't make any sound at all. It's absolutely silent. And its external adapter is also silent and cold. LG was also silent. Acer Nitro had built-in adapter, and it was making annoying unbearable ultrasound noise. So yes, out of these 3, I strongly recommend Samsung. After having it for 6 months, I still strongly recommend it. Very happy with the choice.

@@klukiyan When Brightness is 0, does a decrease in contrast from 50 to 30 or 20 give a noticeable further drop in the brightness of the picture? In absolutely darkness what brightness and contrast levels do you prefer when you work more than hour.
@klukiyan
@klukiyan 4 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderbezverkhyi549 contrast decrease does a noticeable drop in brightness. But overall on Samsung the edges (top/down) of contrast are not as far from each other as on other monitors. On LG and Acer, putting contrast to 100 was making everything burning white, putting to 0 I was getting unreadable dark gray crap. On samsung, these edges are not so far from each other. So the image still remains nice and easy for eyes. So yes, if I want to stay in pure darkness for couple of hours, I'd probably prefer to reduce contrast to 20. But after all these months, I noticed that I rather tend to simply turn on the small usb lamp on my desk. It doesn't emit much light. But I get comfortable to continue coding for several hours in almost complete darkness untill I fall asleep. My favorite resolution scaling is also 150%. All sizes are just perfect and crisp at the same time.

Would calibrating this monitor, in SDR mode, makes things better? As is, in SDR mode, out of the box, the blacks are compressed, because on a scale of 1-255, it's only at about 13, that gray can be appreciated. HDR fixes this, but at the expense of washed out colors.

Hi, After trying these 2 and one more (27" Acer Nitro VG270Kbmiipx), I've settled up with Samsung one.

@@klukiyan "HDR effect I can't properly evaluate. I don't understand what to do with it. Everything becomes too bright." HDR is for photos, gaming and especially movies. What it does adds more “dynamic range” where dynamic range is the ratio/contrast of the the brightest whites (light) to the darkest blacks (dark) in images be it photographs or games or movies. In other words it enhances the colors and to do so your panel needs capabilities that we don't really have in this price range. Proper HDR is found in expensive TVs and really expensive monitors so much that it really isn't worth it for the average users. It is more for people that are really making money out of photography to justify the use of an expensive monitor that can do proper HDR. In our cases with this monitors price range of 300 ~ 600 euros you get HDR10 and HDR400 (maybe HDR600 in 2020) if we lucky and to be honest they don't even do that properly. This monitors do not have the proper brightest something like SDR Peak Brightness 325 cd/m² HDR Peak Brightness 375 cd/m² is to be expected from them (if not lower) and for proper HDR we need numbers way way bigger then that at least double if not triple.. those expensive TVs have 1000~1400+ peak brightness. When you select it and go watch a movie your movie also needs to be HDR ready basically to have the proper effect. I uploaded here 3 pictures taken from a movie HDR ready and then from a non HDR version of the same movie just so you see why you need that extra brightness: This is screenshot from a 10 bit HDR version: i.ibb.co/K9bNT4t/HDR.png This is screenshot from a 10 bit SDR version: i.ibb.co/0m33015/SDR.png This is screenshot from a normal Bluray version: i.ibb.co/p2Cwc1F/BluRay.png Well that's the best I can explain it. I'm no expert at this things this is just the info that I picked up. PS: not all people even like HDR and most people didn't even get to see the real thing from a proper source (10 bit UHD HDR Bluray) and a proper TV with a good panel that can pull it off (expensive).

Samsung monitor supports Nvidia G-sync, please?
@klukiyan
@klukiyan 4 жыл бұрын
Of course it does. Nvidia G-sync is now compatible with FreeSync Monitors. But it works only via display-port. Not through HDMI

I played wither3 and Viktor vran. And it was amazing. However if you play fps, then you'll be better with a 165hz qhd monitor

I have this monitor and I’m wondering if anyone else is finding the whites on screen more yellow. I’m comparing this with my MacBook Pro 16”. I do photo editing so it’s easy to tell. Also I don’t have eye saver on. Wanted to know if it’s a defected panel or if there’s any way of fixing this. If anyone else is having this issue please comment below or I may ask for a replacement.

Great video. Can you overclock this monitor to 75 hz at 4k? (I'm between 2k 170hz and 4k 60hz. But I dont like 60hz, 75 is minimum for me.) Thank you.

Hi, thanks for the review. The comparison was really helpful to decide. I bought the monitor, but when i started to test it, on black background i could see somehow a 2cm darker horizontal line. It seems some kind of px issue. Anyone has the same problem?
@klukiyan
@klukiyan 4 жыл бұрын
most probably you'll need to give it back. 2cm horizontal line is surely not something that an IPS screen should have....

@@anduelpitushi4760 omg that's very wrong for sure. it's either defected, or before coming to you it stayed in some showroom for 1 year with screen on and with some bright banner line that burned in.
