Thank you for all the great information. I was able to do everything on my own in the shop. The washers for the OBX from McMaster-Carr fit perfectly. You're helping a lot of people out! Great job!

i have the same axles you got, they seem great been using them for over a year now. the only thing i dont like is that they feel kinda loose at slow speeds and with the wheels off the ground i can move the wheel like a 1/4 in before the differential side of the axle moves !!

i sent a video to futofab he said this are off road cv's and this birfield cv joints can take alot of angle thats why there for a bit loose, i done research but i dont know, its a bit anoying when you feel the slight tap at low speeds and on the freeway . ill take them a part some time this year to take a look at them internally for any bad signs oh and a bit of moist makes its way out so ill also put some rtv on the mating surfaces while iam at it

nice axle setup, did you think about going z31 turbo axles before you went futofab?
@OldDatsun
@OldDatsun 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the z31 turbo axles are a perfectly good swap as long as you can find them, which I had a hard time doing. I chose the futofab axles because of the engineering involved, specifically losing the u-joints and using bearings and races I thought was super nice. Although they are more expensive, I felt it was worth it. However, the z31 turbo axles are a great swap
@scottChapman25
@scottChapman25 7 жыл бұрын
must have missed your reply, yeah I got lucky and scored two sets of them. did you use any spacers for the r200 gear?
@OldDatsun
@OldDatsun 7 жыл бұрын
I used the original spacers and shim that came from that r200. The clearance seems perfect and there's no play.
@scottChapman25
@scottChapman25 7 жыл бұрын
Old Datsun I meant when you attached the obx to the r200 gear? I've read people using shims for the r200 bolts.
@OldDatsun
@OldDatsun 7 жыл бұрын
Oh, no. The ring gear and pinion gear aligned just as they with the stock differential. This is why the original spacers and shim fit as well. I haven't seen any issues needing shims for the ring gear with the r200 though. I can at least speak with regards to the OBX

I've included the FutoFab CV Shafts link above in the description, as well as a link to TechnoToyTuning's 280Z page of parts. Also in the description is the link for those belleville disk springs for the OBX Differential. Now, I purchased my OBX through eBay. There are a few sellers on there still carrying the OBX unit. Just make sure it meets your applications.

did you check your backslash?
@OldDatsun
@OldDatsun 7 жыл бұрын
So, the best (or quietest) backlash for these r200's is when the gears are where they were originally when they come from the factory. In order to keep that as close as possible, I left the pinion gear in place (bearing and seals were in great shape) and used all the original spacers, the shim, and all the hardware for the ring gear and bearing caps. Now, I didn't include it in the video but I installed the diff 3 times checking the clearances and spacing. Using the original parts and with the best measurements I could get, the backlash is the same, or at least within a small degree. Now, I have rolled the rear end over quite a bit now and it feels very smooth and so far no noise. However, this has not been on the road yet. Also, for those interested, I believe the specs for the backlash in the r200 is 0.004 to 0.008

yo man, you're spending so e serious cash on this. from my counting so far, at least $7 grand worth of parts from techino toy tuning. is t that a bit overkill?
@OldDatsun
@OldDatsun 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure where you're getting that number but you're a bit off. I'm using T3's weld-in coilover (which they may no longer offer and I cant remember the price of them but they were cheaper then the now offered coilovers) which allows me to use my existing struts. All the rear end components from T3 were about $2000, plus $900 for the CV shafts. Also, by using an OBX LSD (~$330) versus an OS Giken LSD (~$1450-$1600) I saved quite a bit. Also, T3 offers a rear end conversion for $2829 technotoytuning.com/nissan/280z/complete-r200-r230-rear-end-conversion-z-car-0 Front end components were actually pretty cheap for what all they do. The GTX2 control arms and TC tension rods together are $600. They allow a lot of adjustment and are built very well. So, yes, its a bit of money but if you want a great handling and performing platform, you'll need components that will be able to handle it.
@Bashirbros

The rear end suspension kit alone is early $3k technotoytuning.com/nissan/280z/complete-r200-r230-rear-end-conversion-z-car-0
@OldDatsun
@OldDatsun 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is $2829 as I stated in my above comment. This is not the rear end conversion I used, however, T3 does offer different packages for whatever you may need. Now, if T3 is outside of your budget, then there are other options out there. However,you do get what you pay for. In my opinion, your dollar goes furthest with T3. Their products are very well designed, machined, and welded. It's why I chose them for my build and am very happy with the results.
