Being a son of a diesel mechanic, I rebuilt a 283 four bolt main in my freshman year of high school in our garage, sold it for $300.00 and used the money's to buy a 1968 Plymouth RoadRunner 383 w/ 4speed muncie for $200.00.

Sorry there were no 283 4 bolt mains. Only 2 bolt. They were to early for 4 bolt. Nice try though

One thing that I learned back in the early 1970's when building a 327 to put into my mum's older Chevy II was that almost all of the SBC parts would fit in whatever SBC you were working on. But... they might not be what was meant to work for that particular application. I bought a distributor somewhere along the line but it came out of a pickup truck so the advance curve was wrong for the car. I did the same with buying a carb. So, as easy as I hope it still is to find parts, be careful to get what will works best for your application. Good luck on your build; I'm sure it'll be fun and rewarding.

yeah you have to be careful when mixing parts, it can lead to weird problems. still not 100% on how i will put it together, its going to be a everyday driver

We also had a gal in our auto mechanics class, her name Paula. She had a Chevy Nomad, I believe was a '56 she brought into the shop. My friend Jeff had a 1965 Chevy Impala SS. I'd never seen a vacuume gauge like he had in the dash of his '65 Chevy.

Luv those nomads, think she still has it? I've seen a few vac gauges in some 70's big gm cars, supposed to help with gas mileage

That's what I'm saying but everybody hates on anything smaller than the 327 but with a little bit of love they may not make a ton of power but will be a fun reliable motor

nothing wrong with a 283, heck even a 307, which is just a stroked 283. the 267 and 305 are the smog dog small engines, where most of the hate comes from i believe

@@chevyfarmersgarage1955 most hate I've seen was the 305 but they make power when done right would I go out and buy a motor smaller than the 327 to build probably not unless I really wanted to see what I could do but if you've got a car that's already got a 305 they can make decent power with mods and throw deeper rear gears and a stall converter in it and ittle rip pretty damn good

@@chevyfarmersgarage1955 my buddy's dad literally said that 305s weren't worth pissing on if they were on fire mind you he was talking about a 305 that came out of my buddy's truck that would spin 31s relatively easy with just a 3.73 rear

I built a 283 back in '92 as my first engine. Steel crank and bored it .030 over as well with a eddy performer cam and it ran great for a small engine. To find what looks to be rebuilt one that grungy just shows how much time has elapsed since '67 when it was new. Are you sure that the ridge isn't mainly carbon build up? The cylinders look pretty glazed so it looks like the cross-hatch is pretty much gone so new rings and a hone would be needed at least. Excited to follow this build..

that trans was def grungy, its got a good ridge from wear, havent decided what i want to do for sure with it, i have been looking for another 283, hopefully i can find one in a little bit better condition to start with, thanks for watching

Used to be you could find 283s everywhere, but getting rarer now. Still looks to be a good builder, but if not, there's def. some parts on there that would bring money. Have you pulled the bottom end apart? Curious in the condition of the crank and bearings....@@chevyfarmersgarage1955

i have not pulled the bottom end apart, got kinda sidetracked from it, i have been searching for another one, i want to stay with a late 283, like another 67, they say they are a better / harder block than the early ones, they are not supposed to wear the bore so easy, although this one was out of a 67 impala, i never did check the date on it

Possible, I do know that some of those older sbc are prone to wear, they say they are not as hard as the newer blocks
